Should we just show up and hope...
or try to find an alternate route/campsites in the canyon? We wanted to hike into Bright Angel via S. Kaibib, camp 2 nights and then out Bright Angel Trail, camping at Indian Gardens on the way...argh! Should we just scrap it and go to Havasu Falls? Help!

I vote for alternate campsites/routes/dates. You take a big risk just showing up and hoping. Like someone on the other thread said, it took them two days of waiting before they got their permit. If you are in good shape you could always hike rim to river to rim in one day and see the area that way. I did that once and enjoyed it. Whatever you decide, good luck.

Grand Canyon
Go to Havasu Falls, by all means. It's gorgeous!

Or, find other dates -- midweek preferably or off season. I went in early October and had no problem getting reservations - of course the two feet of snow up on the rim may have had something to do with that! Alternately, if you are a very strong dayhiker, do the hike as a dayhike. It was harder than I expected, just because the uphill was so continuous, but it's feasible if it isn't too hot and you are in good shape. Just carry lots of water!

Havasupai or alternative
Havasupai is a good option anytime and should be on any "must do" list. A good alternative for the canyon is the Hermit to Bright Angel route which connects via the Tonto trail. Options for the first night are Hermit Campground or Hermit Rapids or Monument Canyon or Granite Rapids. And the last night at Indian Gardens or Salt Creek.

I am going up to the canyon on Thursday. If you will send me your possible dates I will stand at the window and see if I can get something for you. I won't be back until Monday since I will be hiking. You'll have to trust me with your address and all. Send your info to maryphyl@mail.com

Advice for getting a permit--when I write I give starting dates. When you are too specific and it is not open they quit trying. I have never been turned down. They will work with you to find something.

I just deleted a note I deemed to be spam and then thought it might have been a response about the canyon. If it was please resend and put something about Grand Canyon in the title. Mary

Last chance!! I just hate it when someone posts and never comes back to read responses.
