Just wanted to share my grandfather mtn. trip yesterday. We was lucky enought to get some great weather.

I would love to take this trip again when it's not so icy on the trail. Maybe springtime when everything is bluming. Maybe even mnake a 2 nighter out of it because of the difficulty.

Wow, neat pics! That looks like a great area, if a trip is arranged for May, I'd be interested.

cool artex. I'll post it on the trip page later on today. This is a great place. Have a link to the website

Oh, there is a $6 fee, but I will get me a one year group access pass, this way I can get up to 5 people in without any charge. At least I think so. I love this place.

Count me in
Well, count me if schedule permits. May is 2-3 months away. Tough for me to plan that far ahead.

Your right Gemini...Beanhed took me in on a pass like that. I think we could all donate some money for the pass for the first time and maybe we could do a follow up later in the summer?

aNice pics, Gemini. Looks like you had a big change in weather when you were leaving. Went from blue skies to what almost looked like a tornado was about to rip through

yeah, it looked pretty bad at the end, but actually it was only cold and a lot of fog. Well, a little rain, but that's all.

Proposed date
We are looking at May 16, 17 and 18th. We can meet at the beginning of the profile trail there is a big parking lot there where the rangers hang out and check everything often. How does that sound?

I'm fine with it, but isn't that the week of mothersday?
Another thing: I actually wanted to stay only one night. I know I have somewhere written "2-nighter" but ment to say "2-days". Doesn't matter, we will probably take more then one car anyway, so I can leave early, hmm, or not.

G00SE and I dayhiked the profile trail last fall. Very nice. You do indeed get a very good view of the old man's profile on that trail. Be careful, there's a section close to the top that's a real ankle-turner. The trail goes up a steep creek bed that's very rocky with lots of loose rock. The views from the top(s) are spectacular in the fall. I'm sure they'll be nice in the spring also.

Great. I had no idea when motherday was (no calender in the house right now...need to get one)

so we have a set date. anyone wants me to put it on the trip page? well, I'll just do it. just got to make sure if this will be a 1, 2 or 3 nighter. (a little confused and AGAIN a little slow this morning)

Gemini, if I'm able to attend, I'd make it a two-nighter for myself since I'd have a longer drive. If y'all make it an overnighter, I could easily improvise my plans to fit into the hike you have planned by camping out near the trailhead or something.

For me, too far in advance to say if I'd be able to go for sure or not, but I'm definitely interested. I'll be needing my mountain fix at that point since I'm about to move to Tampa! :-)

Tampa huh? ahhh, bad memories. Had to call 911 once from my cell. car was following us. Cops everywhere. now it is funny back then it wasn't.

if you need a ride from SC (if you make it) let me know.

Artex, I am in the same boat. I am 5-6 hours from the mountains, so it is vitually impossible for me get up at 2 am to meet people at 8am Saturday morning, then hike all day. So I usually drive up friday afternoon and camp near the trailhead. If I make it to Grandfather, thats what I will do.

hyway, if I go hiking I get up at 4:00 :) but then... I am probably younger then you! LOL
Gemini
9:46:16 AM
3/05/03

I would get up at 4 am to do that, no problem at all. But to get up at 2 or 3 am, drive 5 hrs, then hike for 7 or 8 hours is a bit much for my old bones.
hyway

3/05/03

lol. I hate getting up early but for some reason it does't bother me when I go hiking. Can you imagine I even hear the alarm clock. I sleep through storms and all, and it normally takes a while until I wake up, but not when I go hiking.
Gemini

3/05/03

I am a sound sleeper too. When In was a kid my dad was the chief of the Volunteer Fire Department and we had one of the fire alarms mounted at the top of a tree in our backyard. That thing would go off and wail for 5 minutes. My mom, dad and brothers would all get up and stomp around the house coming and going and I wouldn't hear a thing.
hyway
10:21:06 AM
3/05/03

so it's a date
So we are going with the 17th and 18th of May and if Artex can come anyone that wants to meet him on Friday can...I believe Bean would like to know that cause he would probably be able to go one day early.

Yeah getting up early to hike is not a bother. Wish I was hiking this week instead of sitting home sick. WEll at least I am getting tons of rest..
