"Pigeons have been used by man to transport news for over 5000 years... Christian religion tells of the story of Noah, who sent a dove three times to look for a dry place to land. Two of the most well-known pigeons were 'GI Joe,' who accomplished his missions in Italy, and an English pigeon nameed 'Mary'... she was wounded 22 times and served 5 years of service! A combination of an extrememly accurate "sunclock" and magnetic fields enable the amazing athletes to return home. Also, the ability to hear sounds 11 octaves below middle C allows the pigeons to detect earthquakes and electrical storms. During World War II there were 3000 soldiers and 150 officers in the United States Pigeon Service to take care of 54,600 military pigeons!" SO, guys, if you refer to pigeons as 'rats with wings,' not only are you Unpatriotic, but you're a Heathen, too, <G>” 8:27:31 AM 3/03/03 “my middle finger” 8:28:49 AM 3/03/03 “The Scarlet Macaw.” 8:50:53 AM 3/03/03 “Is the internet putting pigeons out of business?” 8:54:38 AM 3/03/03 “You've seen all those out-of-work pigeons downtown... "If theres one thing that I like its a burn up on my bike a burn up with a bird up on my bike just for kicks we ride all through the night" motorcycle song from late 60's” 3:44:32 PM 3/03/03 “Artex - Sass, sg, and I saw a Great Horned Owl next last spring, complete w/ little baby owls. They had set up in a nest previously used by Great Blue Herons in the rookery by my house. It was quite amazing. Tons of Herons filled the tops of trees and among them, a family of Great Horned Owls. Prolly one of the coolest bird experiences for me! What I learned that day from the dude that pointed out the nest: That Great Horned Owls do not build their own nests, nor do they nest inside trees like a Screech Owl... They always use a nest made from another large bird, such as the Heron. Talk about squatters rights. Anyway... If I had to pick only one favorite bird, it would be the Great Blue Heron. I grew up watching those birds and was (am) so mesmerized by their size and beauty. The rookery by my house used to have about 100 nests. It was amazing. It has significantly decreased in size over the years, but is still a sight to see when the babies are popping their little heads out of the huge nests.” 4:35:13 PM 3/03/03 “I like the sandhill crane. They are tall - like 4 to 6 feet - and congregate in large numbers just west of here in the Fall. I've stood at an observation point and seen several thousand sandhills come in for a landing about 20 feet over my head. They have a very prehistoric call that makes me feel like I'm in an episode of Jurassic Park.” 5:29:50 PM 3/03/03 “My favorite is also the Eastern Bluebird. Beautiful song.” 5:38:07 PM 3/03/03 “I had a dream the other night about a 'coffee table' book called 'Killers of the Road'. It was pack with photos of redtails, coopers, kestrels, plus an array of other birds that can be seen while on the road. I know it is not the proper way to drive but I spend a fair amount of time looking out the side windows. Especially when on the big roads. I don't know about you folks but I see a large amount of 'killer' birds hangin' around the interstate and roads. Perched on trees, fence posts and signs/light poles or whatever that is adjacent to the road cut through. And how about those little kestrels that hover above the median. Just an idea,,, Anyhoot, I'm still waiting to catch a glimpse of the 'pipsquack' bird but I have seen the golden eagle and gyrfalcon. Two beautiful birds. The western raven would be 3rd for its conversation abilities. I'm fascinated by all birds” 5:50:45 PM 3/03/03 “That's cool, tarabull! I have a friend who lives in a very wooded area of Cape Cod. There are a TON of coyotes there, and one time when I was staying over there we recorded some rabbit-in-distress calls from the internet and played them really loud on his back patio, in hopes of luring in some coyotes that we could observe. Almost immediately, we heard several Great Horned owls call back each time we played the recording. After several playings, the owl calls were getting closer and closer. We were frozen with excitement and anticipation each time we played the tape, we could barely contain ourselves. We heard a "swish... swish... swish..." ... the sound of some very big wings flapping, and a huuuuuuuge great horned owl landed on a tree limb in his backyard. It was siloutted against the moonlit sky, and we watched it in awe. After a minute, we played the tape again. And ANOTHER owl, just as big, came in and started fighting the other owl on the tree limb and they flew off into the night! It was absolutely amazing! I wonder if owls hoot in the presence of food, as if to say to other owls "I know you hear or sense this prey, but it's mine, and I'm claiming, so stay the f away." I wonder this because about a month ago in the Catskills, I was awoken at night by what sounded like a rabbit in distress, and a really loud barage of owls hooting ensued. Differnt kind of owl this time, I think they were barn owls judging by the hooting, but they sure did make some awful screeching sounds when it sounded like they were finally descending upon the rabbit or whatever it was. I feel like such a zoologist after experiencing both of these events, and drawing my own conclusions, even if they are wrong. It was just a real honor and a prividge to be able to see/hear both of those events. Truly unforgettable.” 5:51:53 PM 3/03/03 “Sounds amazing! I would have loved to witness that. I really don't know what message is being sent when a owl "hoots". Prolly there are different types of hoots. I'd be curious. Where are the bird experts when ya need 'em?” 4:13:43 PM 3/04/03 “Larry” 4:20:24 PM 3/04/03 “Right on Tarabull. Just saw a few great blues over the weekend. They truly are magnificent birds. I like night herons.” 5:15:00 PM 3/04/03 “NYC Pigeon” 5:29:36 PM 3/04/03 “The shrike is a tiny raptor that eats insects and sometimes small birds and mammals. It will sometimes hang mice or birds on the thorns of thorny trees or shrubs, hence its nickname, the Butcher Bird. I too have a special place in my heart for the Tufted Titmouse. They are sooo cute!” 8:01:07 AM 3/05/03 “My favorite Byrd is Roger McGuinn. The 12-string Rickenbacker electric guiitar sounds like a dream in his hands.” 8:06:57 AM 3/05/03
