Lurking no longer...
Hello All In Trail Talk.

Clearly I am new to the board, but I feel I have a gist of the place from two weeks of lurking. I'll start off by asking you all about the MSR Pocket Rocket. I'm looking for a super lightweight stove that performs better then the typical canister. Any info is greatly appreciated.

That's a good choice. Keep in mind the canister stoves don't work well below freezing. If you live in a warm climate, or plan to just hike in warm weather, then no prob.

I have a Primus Yellowstone Lite canister stove. Only costs about 20 bucks and it performs fantastic. I've had it for years (though I've been using my Whisperlite white gas all this winter), and couldn't be happier with it.

Good luck KeltyHiker. Welcome and hope you stick around.

OK, Kelty. Welcome aboard. And now that Artex, being the good gentlemen he is, helped you with your gear question, can we start giving you a hard time like we do to everyone?

Yes, the lovely Mapleleaf will probably grace the board in the morning. Right now, she's either counting sheep or dreaming about cursing them out because she can't sleep...

BB's Casserole Recipe
1. Take some good looking girl who can cook.

2. Make her like you.

3. Ask her nicely to make some exotic casserole.

4. Present it at a party.
a. If people like it, dump the girl and claim it as your own.
b. If people don't like it, blame it on the girl, and make sweet love to her all night long.

5. Add salt or pepper to taste.

Welcome, Kelty. I too cannot recommend a canister stove. Never owned one. I will tell you a pop can alcohol stove is pretty good and very cheap. Esbit works well enough, is really lightweight but not so cheap and Svea 123's rock, run about $70 new and are fool proof. Zip stoves are a pain, and messy to boot, Peak one's always seem to shoot three foot flames, and scare the crap outta me, and that in a nutshell is all of my stove experience.

Also, if you have specific questions about one type of gear, try doing a search, if you have the time. There are generally loads of threads on gear, with alot of great info in them.

If you must know, sassafrass has no idea what she's talking about. i doubt she has even even set foot on a trail, so I would be very cautious about her advice.

Welcome aboard KeltyHiker.

I only used the Whisperlite Dragonfly (?)...so I can't really recommend any brand.

The veteran backpackers should know which is a good brand.

Buddha, I think you should keep the casserole girl even if the casserole is loved by all. This way you continue to get exotic casseroles for dinner all the time and you get to impress your friends w/ the great cook/cutie you landed.

Sass probably knows some good casserole recipes, Kelty. Just ask.

KeltyHiker, welcome to TT.
I have the MSR pocket rocket and enjoy using it. I have used it in all types of weather. You can bring anything to a boil quickly or simmer with it. It is light weight and easy to use.

WTF are you two talking about, lol? What did I just miss?

Buddha Bear is correct, I know nothing, except for how to make cookies, and I don't really hike, I just play a hiker on TV.

Sass, I had a question about the All About The Kids hike for you. If I could afford to fly, where would I need to fly into?

So,.... you're a virtual hiker? Is that like Dr. Who?

lol, I just read the bits I missed...it all makes sense now.

Newgirl, I would suggest Deroit Metro, and we'll get you to the hike. Flint would be an option too, but may be more a tad more difficult for folks to get you from the airport. If you fins a great deal for arriving there it's doable though. BTW, we have two carseats...and newergirl is welcome to one of them while she visits. =)
