ODD
Did anyone else see the news report last night on the syndrome to be added to ADD and ADHD? It's called ODD, Oppositional Disagreement Disorder ( or something like that). No kidding.
Basically it covers kids that refuse to or cannot behave.

What do you teachers out there think? What more can you tell me about it?

I didn't see the show, but I think it is Oppositional Defiance Disorder. My son got that diagnosis, but I haven't thought much about it because it sounds like...I dunno, I just don't think every problem is a "disorder."

He is also ADHD. That one I believe.

It means lids who refuse to obey any rules or anything their parents tell them. Supposedly 1 in 25 kids has it. A new "diagnosis," eh? Great.

Parents with the brains to be a parent rather than a "friend" to their kids would get rid of 90% of these "syndromes".

Where's The Dad?
One thing my kids picked up on quick when we watched the news story was the lack of any presence or even a mention of a FATHER for the out of control kid. The mother seemed frazzled and at wits end. Hmmmm? Could there be a connection?
Diet too?

Disagreement Disorder? sorry that was funny. I read this message earlier but couldn't think fo the word either.

I have a couple friends whos kids take drugs (ridalen??) for add.
my youngest always was a little bugger, and I thought he is probably pretty close to having add. Me screaming made it worth, time out did not help either. One day I just took him in my arms talked to him about it, explained to him the situation. Telling you that is hard if you are mad too (because you can't stand the yelling no more), but after about 2 weeks it worked. He changed completely around. He is still a little "dennis da Mennice" but I would not want him any other way.

I don't think we had drugs back then, and the kids turned out just fine. I don't think we need them now. But then, I may have not seen a really bad case yet. Still, I think there's always another way besides drugs.

my 2 cents...

I really like what you said........
"there's always a better way besides drugs".
Relates to syndromes and life in general.

I think the "no Dad" thing might have a significant bearing on the problem. My son obeys me a lot better than his Mom. That varies from kid to kid, of course. I was always very good for my Mom (until my late teens, anyway) but my brother was always a terror. Having my Dad around might have made a difference for him.

Maybe if you shake 'em hard enough when they are young they won't be up for misbehaving.

I am ADHD. I have taken ritilin to please my wife, but just didn't like the feeling I got from it. Some people may call it a calming effect, but I always felt as if I was walking into a haunted house just as it was getting dusk and the spooky things were waking up for their evening fun. So I quit taking it.

So I forget things sometimes, and if I have to concentrate on a single item you can forget getting any productivity out of me. But give me a crisis or a heavy burden and I will shine.

My brother is Adult ADD too. He simply can't work on a single long-term task, but if you give him 1000 2 minute tasks, he's done. His words, not mine.

Bit, your Dad being around during your brother's youth might have somehow lessened the difficulties he's experiencing now?

projects without deadlines are dead in the water if you give them to an ADHD Adult.

ADD isn't his only problem. That might be manageable if it weren't for everything else.
