HEY!!! No banning. there is nothing wrong with car camping. I like to go car camping with the family. I strugle all the time with backpacking so once in a while its nice to sit back after the children are fast asleep and emjoy a cold beer. Beer that is cold and I didnt have to carry it for miles.

SO THERE :)~~~~~ (thats me giving you raspberries!)

Don't knock it, Free. I'm all for backpacking, but sometimes, wespecially when you out with kids, it's nice to do things a little differently. I mean, what is the stigma about this. It makes no sense...

I was just looking at the Monongahela NF site(not GORP...the USFS site)

Laurel Fork is real nice but we'd bettter stay for at least two nights.
Its a long drive to the middle of nowhere.

The Laurel Fork(creek) is perfect for keepin' beer cold.

Its in the middle of a REAL wilderness area.

The creek trail is nice for day hikes.

I've been there in April and it was deserted.
One Mem Day weekend it was a zoo with trailers and generators and even a couple of lawnmowers.....I $hitchew not!

so this is how I plan on spending our first night out car camping this year (ok free hold onto your knickers)
We are going upstate NY. there is a Drive-in and we are going to watch a double feature then drive back to camp and camp out under the stars. the 2nd night, we are going to use our new Telescope to look at the stars that we cant see because of the city lights.
then sleep under the stars, then the next day go home happy.

ok free this is where you ask if you can come along :)

Car camping-

Cars and Rvs Packed into a "natural" setting like sardines

Loud Music from cars

Car lights shinning into your tent

Garbage strewn every where

People walking through your camp

The lovely smell of outhouse fumagating the air...

Ahhhhh, Car camping!

no not camping in NJ anymore LOL

we have a great place that we have been going to for the last couple of years. I dont tell people where it is. Its like a secret place. Its just far enough away but still only about 1 1/2hrs from us. I love it. never crowed. the town is small. Its nestled right in the midle of NY and CT.
its about a 1000 acre park. it has lakes and hiking. I truly love it. so there are places that can be found.

Hey Dunk, where would that be? In the middle of the Mojave?

I dig car camping, too. But I was really disappointed with the car camping locales along Highway 1. I guess it all depends on what your concept of nature is. For me, car camping is not so much about the nature as it about having a party in the woods.

I will NEVER NEVER NEVER oh did I say NEVER?
car camp in NJ on July 4th ever ever again. I think that trip cost us about $1000.00
it rained all day so that night we rented a little trailer, then the car broke down on the way home. the crowds and the people were so bad bad. I wanted to kill them all. when I woke up at 6:00am to someones radio I flipped!!

so the moral of the story is?

NEVER NEVER CAR CAMP ON ANY HOILDAY!!

Glad you like the pictures. I'm sure I'll write up some kind of report.

Since I had a minor surgery a few weeks ago, I'm not quite ready for hiking so Wind Walker asked me if I was interested in a car camping trip. I'm planning on taking the wife and kids too, so it should be pretty fun. Just not sure when we are going.

When you go to a campground that requires no hiking to get to. Essentially, you can park close to the tent.

Hey, we used to do this all the time while I was livig in germany. nothing wrong with that.

Well let's see...

Last May I spent 10 days in a campground in North Carolina. A tent only campground with only 10 sites with no other campers but me for 7 of the days. From that base I was able to hike to different locations every day and probably visited 50+ different waterfalls. Every night I had chicken or steak over a fire and a few beers. That was dreadful.

In October I spent a week in a campground in New Hampshire. From that base, I was able to hike to several summits in the White Mountains. More lousy campfire dinners every night. Really awful.

The following week I had the misfortune of meeting several TT'ers in Maine. The nerve of us driving to a lean-to in the middle of Baxter State Park and then hiking the Knife Edge to Mt Katahdin.

The following week I stayed in a campground in Acadia National Park where there is no backpacking, just 100+ miles of fantastic hiking trails and scenery to die for. Because it was so late in the season, I practically had the campground to myself. The misery!!!

Yeah, camping near the car really sucks. Come on people, get real for crying out loud!

I also backpacked many many times last year as well as countless dayhikes. (Did he say Dayhike? Ban the bastard!)

The point is if you are outdoors doing something you enjoy, who really gives a crap if it's car camping, base camping, day hiking, backpacking or whatever? I love all of it!

Just because one prefers an activity over the other does not mean the other activity sucks. Geez.

Pennsy, I understand your point. There are more comforts to car camping, but when I go camping, I try to bring as few amenities as possable. I don't go out in the woods to live like I'm at home.

free23...
shut up!!! I've had some AMAZING car camping trips while on business trips where backpacking would not have been possible...

Just because your trips have sucked bacon rings and rotted the bird, doesn't mean that the rest of us haven't had a grand time...so, your simple mindedness and feeblemindedness focus on something that you obviously know nothing about is not up for debate...

and Mr. Lord of the Bacon Rings...

Car camping does NOT suck...it simply IS...thats all.

If not for starting out car camping, I'd not have fallen in love with backpacking and if I had a choice to staying in a hotel or crashing at a really cool campground...then I'd choose the campground in a heartbeat...and I'm sure that there are plenty of folks that would back up my sentiments...

BUT>>>>>>>>> I have had crappy experiences in campgrounds...but in retrospect..."ITS ALL GOOD".

So, I invite all of you to come off your lousy high horses and stop belittling car campers...cause the only thing that sucks is the one throwing out derisive statements.

There are many ways to have fun in the woods. Backpacking is only one of them.

Anything sucks when you go to the wrong place at the wrong time.

Bizzaro World of Car Camping
One reason I started backpacking was because of all the wierd stuff that happens in campgrounds like folks chopping wood at midnight and others starting their van every 30 minutes to run the heater (they were sleeping therein and the car alarm wailed every time they started the engine).

I carcamp in the winter, not in a campground, but in the forests and trees and sometimes near the hotsprings. I wouldn't be able to snowboard every weekend if I had to pay for a place to stay. I just follow the dirt road and camp anywhere I can find a flat spot. No traffic, no alarms, no people, no facilities. I can wake up in the morning surrounded by mountains. Its the only way to wake up! And its even better when the snow coming down!
