As some of you may know, I have been doing alot of research on my dream of returning to school for another degree.

Well, I have found my dream school - Columbia University! (Now all I need to do is rob a bank or win the lottery - yikes!)

I am just curious if any of you have a degree from Columbia? If so, got any advice?

I hope to go there for a post-bac. in Environmental Biology - continuing on for a Masters.

Yes, I know some of you might be going, "huh?", as I was originally toying with Marine Science! (Mapleleaf)....

Also, any suggestions and/or advice as to how to fund this?

Never go to school in a ghetto, not for any length of time. I made that mistake by going to the university of chicago for law school. Oh, the sadness...

Hey Twinkle, I would look into the finacial aid department. Sometimes you can hook up with alot of little grants that can really add up. I look into some colleges that offered grants for really weird things. You can also apply for Pell grants or look at what the state has to offer. You'd be supprised what some of them have laying around.

Its either that or get you a sugar daddy.....lol

I've dated a couple of girls that were graduates from there. Both were highly intelligent, but didn't have a good sense of humor. That's about all I know. Gee, aren't I helpful?

Lawyerguy:

Don't know when your were in Hyde Park but it's not a ghetto theses days. Been living on the edge of the U of Chicago Campus for many years. Prime real estate these days.

Twinkle Toes: Columbia is a great school.

I just finished my PhD at University of Chicago.

You might have to front load some cash (loans) but once you attach yourself to a Prof's. Project you are likely to get sufficient support. Or if you know what you want to do and there's a prof. you want to study with, go talk to/interview that prof. before submitting your application.

"Hello, Prof. _____, I'm Twinkle Toes, and I'm thinking about applying to Columbia because I am VERY INTERESTED in your work on/in the area of ______. Will you tell me more? ...etc....

Good luck.

One of the boys who made Eagle Scout with my son is working on his Ph.D. there in Math.

Columbia has a good reputation. You will be OK...but I can't offer any first hand opinions.

Get a job
Try getting a job at Columbia. A lot of schools will pay for their employee's tuition. It's working for me!

Twinkles, I got thinking. You know, I'm very disapointed in you. You're a GATOR! Why don't you go back to the University of Florida, which is the GREATEST university in the entire universe?! I mean, c'mon!

j/k... sorta :-)

Artex - the reason I don't want to go to UF is because....well....it's in Florida...the place I moved away from... I really don't want to move to Gainsville at this point in my life. Now, if they gave me a big fat scholarship - then I would definately go there :) Options are not closed off - I'm just really interested in Columbia's program....plus, I've been eyeing Columbia ever since I moved to NYC...

And for Wolfie,
I have a BFA - in dance - did the whole arts conservatory deal while I was still able to - that and they gave me a full four year scholarship.

I was curious about your background b/c I was thinking about doing something similar. However, I have a business degree and would have to take a bunch of undergrad classes 1st before getting into a grad. program for something in the sciences which is kind of an obstacle.

First off.....Bacpac, you may kiss my ass, you miserable piece of crap.

Now...to the people who are nice and not trying to constantly piss me off with unneccessary comments, about which I have zero tolerance for these days....

Wolfie,
I just got off the phone with the advisor for the E3B department. She said that all I need to do is find the best City College to go to in order to catch up on the delinquent courses needed for the Masters program. She said that I would not need to obtain a second Bachelors - just take the missing courses. Then I should be eligibale to apply for next years Masters program.

If you are seriously interested - you can email me and I'll give you more details....

Thanks for the info. I went through exactly the same thing years ago and was told the same thing. The problem was I needed a lot of "missing" courses. From what I remember it would have added another year on to the program I was interested in and I can't stand school to begin with.

What's another of school when you want to make a change in your life? Not really that big of a sacrifice....

Plus, you might just have fun! You should go for it!
