That was very generous of that guy to donate the chee-to and the money Frito Lay gave him to the town and charity.

Definite geek stuff. My take is they are just trying to scare IBM into keeping prices favorable.

This after all the copious press that Apple generated that "proved" that their processors were faster and superior in every way than the Intel chips?

Yeah well..ahem...I guess they didn't...um, scuffs shoes...suck as bad as we...err, look away and scratch head...said they did.

hmm. interesting indeed. Apple has always used a Motorola chipset based upon the 6800 processor series. Not sure why this would hurt IBM. IBM just sold its PC division to a China based company. IBM has for years been focusing its business units towards services and midrange systems. The entire reason Compaq bought DEC back in the late ninties was to bolster its worldwide services capabilities. I see this move strictly as a way for Apple to finally compete with Dell and HP. Apple has just really become an online audio outlet over the past years since the introduction of the IPOD. Mfg's like Sony and HP have been trying to introduce an IPOD killer and take away a portion of that marketplace. How long can Apple survive just selling songs and mp3 players? I think this is a good move for Apple although the Apple faithful will scream bloody murder.

Apple currently uses PowerPC processors, made by IBM, in their Power Mac G5 computers.

Sorry, I said IBM and was thinking Motorola. So...this is to keep Motorola (current supplier) on its toes. IBM might want to get involved if they could take over their system design, but like you said, they just sold to get out of that arena.

The PowerPC processor was developed jointly by Apple, IBM, and Motorola (AIM Alliance).

I thought Motorola was the sole chip supplier. I guess I was wrong. Up until 5 years ago I stayed on top of the whole computer biz - who supplied what, nitty gritty tidbits. Don't get into that as much anymore so I'm getting rusty. I focus on programming and general technology advances now.

Is the Power PC cpu used only in the G5 lineup? What cpu's do they use in their lower performance machine offerings?

Looks like they all use a PowerPC of some sort. The cheaper systems use a G4 instead of a G5.

And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.
