Mundane career = best at backpacking?View MessagesViewing posts 1 to 16 of 16 messages posted.
Just thinking on this... “As I ponder my time away waiting for spring to arrive.... What regular job might translate best into easy backpacking or good skills at backpacking? I was thinking about a mailman (or, yes, woman) on foot. I don't know how far their daily routes are, but heck, they're carrying bags of mail. Gotta help in the whole scheme of training for backpacking!!! (And maybe they rip out the little stove to make lunch?? lol)” 3:26:49 PM 3/08/03 “Teaching! You get lots of time off to go backpacking, and if you're a science teacher, much of the biology, geology, ecology, botany, ect. that is seen and experienced in backpacking can translate over into the classroom. :-)” 4:22:49 PM 3/08/03 “The only problem with the mailman thing liz is that at the end of the day the last thing you will want to do is pick up a sack and go walking.” 2:40:47 AM 3/09/03 “A friend of mine was a mailman and it was hard for him to do much backpacking at all. He got two days off per week, but they were Sunday and one day during the week. Saturday's were hard to get off so he could put a weekend together. He also said he got sick of walking and did enough of it at work that averaged 6 to 8 miles per day, but that just his opinion.” 5:08:45 AM 3/09/03 “I'm still looking for that 10 year, multimillion dollar contract to hike, bike and XC ski at will.” 8:12:39 AM 3/09/03 “Yeah, DOM and rich, good points. Pathie!! Where ya been?” 8:36:20 AM 3/09/03 “A cobbler might be good choice. You'd think ranger would an top choice but most get stuck with desk jobs. SAR could be a good way to go as you do get outside and the training does come in handy. K9 SAR, even better!” 8:42:19 AM 3/09/03 “Yes,mail carriers walk so much they don't like to do it on their time off. When I worked at General Motors we had "drivers" whose job it was to drive the cars after they came off the end of the line. They got so sick of driving they hated to drive anywhere during their off time. Artex is right. Teaching is about as good as it gets. If you can teach something related to nature or outdoors, then it could be even better.” 9:34:26 AM 3/09/03 “Bartender. Well it works for me> It is easy to to take off for 3 days in the middle of the week when there isn't a soul on the trails. Actually, i've only run into people once or twice in the last couple of years, and never at a campsite.” 10:19:51 AM 3/09/03 “Yes but do bartenders lose their hearing and then their ability to do their jobs, a lot sooner than the general public due to constant exposure to high decibel yakking.” 11:05:15 AM 3/09/03 “Yak herders might do well as backpackers, but who's to say? I was a letter carrier thirty years ago and a young skinny lad. In 2.5 years I had only one Saturday off. When I got my own route after two years, it was about 9-10 miles(according to the guy who bid off of it). "My" Monday off was stolen by a senior "man" before I officially got the route. Oh, I got routed, alright! I began my backpacking "career" during that period. Vacations and holiday weekends were West Virginia Time.” 11:26:47 AM 3/09/03 “WHAT? Speak up! That was bad, wasn't it? We have an internal selector switch for hearing, It blocks out most BS. Serious note, I wear ear-plugs for loud bands. I read a study last year that 150 bartenders died in Irelan last year from 2nd hand smoke. That worries me.” 11:35:10 AM 3/09/03 “Smoke 'em if ya got 'em.” 11:40:57 AM 3/09/03 “I was gonna ask about the smoke. It would seem to be a big concern. OK, well I suppose I should throw in a pitch for newspaper work. Some odd and long hours, but most reporters I hear say, "bring it on," as long as they get time off when they need it.” 8:18:19 PM 3/09/03 “How about a milk women. 8)” 9:05:31 PM 3/09/03 “2nd hand smoke can kill you. I went to a funeral of a girl last year that did not smoke, but got lung cancer that spread to her liver from singing in bars and breathing in 2nd hand smoke.” 9:31:40 PM 3/09/03
