Has anyone here used one of these things? They sound nice, but if a bear ever did take an interest it would get an easy meal. I'm tempted to try one, but I would feel kind of stupid buying an empty paint can.

I saw those before, and I was very skeptical. I still am.

The idea seems sound. I'd have to see a study or something to verify that the seal actually works and will not break down from repetative use. If it does work, i'd rather carry that then a conventional canister.

hmm, I saw them before. Looks like an old paint can to me.

How many of you really do carry bear canisters? I am just wondering, thought there some other things out there that can protect you and your food from bears. (smell)
Seams sooo big to carry with you in your pack.

Bear canisters are required in the Western parks that have brown or grizzly bears. In the East, all we have are black bears, which are half their size and generally afraid of humans. Usually hanging your food is sufficient.

I agree that we don't really need canisters for black bears here in the east. However, the only bears in SEKI and Yosemite are black bears and, boy, you better have a canister there. I just hope the eastern black bears never learn the tricks of the western smarties!

They're getting smarter. There's a bear at Springer in Georgia that's figured out how to defeat the bear cable system. He just shakes it until a food bag falls off. I think they're going to have to modify it to use some sort of clasp instead of a hook.

We use bear canisters all the time
Before we used canisters:
In Yosemite, we had 3 bears working together to get the best hang we had ever done. Medium bear knocked the bags down, Big bear ran with it, and baby was off to the side watching how it was done! The cables in that area were torn down (we used it as a place to hang towels to dry). I don't backpack without a canister anymore. A fed bear is a dead bear!

man, 3 lb thou for a food container.
I have searched a little yesterday, and understand the difference now. no hiking without a bear canister in the western part of the US. Got it!

It's not the extra weight that bothers me so much as it is the price. I know, I'm a cheapass. I'm just feeling surly because I want a Bearikade but can only afford a Garcia.

It sounds like a good idea if it can keep the smell inside then its a very good buy.

What have you people done out there since I've been away??? We never had problems with bears up until I left California in the 80's.

Suckers
$35 for a paint can? I can get a new empty 4 quart can at Lowes for less than $3. I may try it but for attach chipmunks, not bear.
