There are two kinds of people in this world, people who divide human beings into dichotomous categories and those who don't

There are 10 kinds of people in this world, those who can read binary and those who can't.

Yeah, yeah, collectivism.......more like the Medieval mentality of those who tried it is what killed so many.
Tom Terrific

No, more like the need for authoritarian government to make it work. Indeed, collectivism is a medieval mentality.

No, in the medieval mentality there is no real collectivism, only domination by "lords" over slaves.....kinda like the Old South.
Tom Terrific

That's exactly what collectivism turned out to be - domination by the ruling elite over a completely disenfranchised public.

WHile not a fan of communism, its the people who killed people, not the political system.

.....to paraphrase the NRA

Look at the countries where this took place.
Most,if not all, where socially primitive places whose records of political murder pre-date communism by centuries.

Aren't some "conservatives" fond of saying, "I'm a little to the right of Attila The Hun"?

So your argument, then, is communism hasn't had a real test yet; that the right starting conditions - a sophisticated culture, the right people, etc - haven't been found yet.

Look back at that chart. How many more trials that result in millions killed is it going to take to convince you that communism isn't a misunderstood and misapplied utopian system?

Do you know why communism doesn't work? Because it takes an authoritarian power to force people into transactions that may not be beneficial to them. That's the beautiful thing about capitalism (with attendant democratic governance) - no one is forced to enter into any kind of transaction that isn't beneficial to them.

I'm not in favor of Communism by any means, but a key element of the Marxist philosphy is that to work, it must be global. It's never been applied on that basis, and has always had to compete with capitalism, which it will never do.

Tarp Rat

a key element of the Marxist philosphy is that to work, it must be global

Also, communism must come from within via a revolution of the proletariat. That, of course, never happened, and probably never will happen.

Oh, and it's supposed to happen in a capitalist society, whereas every communist regime in real life tried to go directly from an agrarian society to a communist society, skipping the industrial phase.

So I guess I can see where Marx's theories have never been fully tested. But the fact that Marx couldn't anticipate ameliorative factors in the Workers' plight kind of debunks his theory right off the bat. Why, then, would we have any reason to assume that a revolutionary communist power arising from a capitalist state work? It still doesn't address the fact that people (particularly people from a capitalist society) will have to be forced to enter into hurtful transactions.

I think Marx’s view of history was very illuminating, particularly the internal conflicts that would destabilize capitalism. His prescription for a solution was unrealistic, as you’ve pointed out mutt. His theory was based upon the false premise that people are only motivated by economic forces. Many of the ideas for restructuring capitalism into a lasting system came from the labor movement and the ‘socialist’ New Deal.
