I used a Justright Headlamp I bought from REI years ago and ductaped it in the the right spots to keep it from falling off. They do make helmet mounted lamps just for cycling, but they cost around $100 the last time I checked.

Do you think velcro straps would work? I may need to remove it for some hiking sections.

dhutch. I've used velcro for a light weight light. My zipka retractable band goes around my helmet, but wants to slip up and off. A little strategic duct tape would work for that.

For you night single track riding, a headlamp AND bicylce headlight would be the best visibility. The bike is fixed straight ahead, which is ok on a straight section, but you want to look ahead on curves etc. The lamp on your head is better for that.

Thanks. I have a pretty big headlamp (Myo 5) but it has a battery case that will fit in my pack pocket. I got about 5 velcro strips to attach it cause last time it wanted to slide up. It may be a pain but better than not being able to see.

And yes, Pathman I have a niterider bike light and blinking rear light.

You've got to love the mandatory gear list. Somebody telling you to go out and shop for cool stuff you want anyway!

I never tried velcro, but it might work. You might be able to wrap it around in some manner something like they use it to secure air pumps to the bike frame.

Saturday I went on my longest road trip, 42 miles. I was tired at the end of it but it was a blast. Going down one hill I was traveling close to 41 mph.
Sunday morning with my legs feeling the miles from Sat a friend of mine and myself went on another trip. This one was a little easier 26 miles.

One bike club has the road marked for so you can go as little as 26 or up to 100 miles.

That's awesome, Ewk!!!

I was up to 52 miles last fall but this year, I have been doing about 9 miles until yesterday...out in the Gettysburg area car camping for the weekend, went about 18 miles, touring the battlefields. Great workout, great place to visit.

Fritz, I bet that was a pretty place to bike at. When visiting places like that it makes it so much easier to stop along the way.

When I was in RMNP a couple of weeks ago there were people biking through it. Talk about some long steady climbs and super fast downhills. You would have to be in pretty good shape to bike through the park.

Bike Question
I've been riding a mtn bike on the road for exercise adn thats fine. But I've been thinking about getting a road bike and maybe entering a few events.

What should I look for in a good all purpose road bike.

such as:

21 speed?
handlebar style?
clip pedals or toe straps?

I can't imagine that I'd spend more than 300 bucks on something like this either, even that may be a stretch. If I know what I'm looking for, ebay is prbably a good place to shop.

Thanks in advance.

Roam, I have clipless pedals on both of my bikes. I am finally getting use to them on the road bike but no where even close to feeling comfortable with them on the mountain bike. You are going to fall no matter what so just be prepared.

Go clipless, you'll never go back.

I had a week recently, plus this past weekend, of biking in and around the northeast part of Yellowstone. My road rides were 32-44 miles and about 20 or so on the mountain bike. I'll try to get the pictures up here soon. It was great--mostly in the Lamar and Soda Butte valleys. Saw lots of wildlife; moose, elk, bison, bear, coyotes, bighorn sheep and lots of squashed rodents. I'm riding a Trek 2000 with Eggbeater pedals. My mountain bike is a Trek with Eggbeater Mallets.

SS and Roam, I got a low end Lemond for $750.00 and that included the clipless pedals. Don't forget to add another 60.00 to 150.00 for shoes esp if you want to use the shoes for mtn and road biking. I am quite happy with the bike I got. Now I could have spent way more if I want to get into road racing, which I may try next yr.

road bikes and night lights
Hi, as a seasoned 22 year veteran of riding on roads with traffic at all times of day, I have found that generator systems are good for city riding but detachable front and rear lights are better if you can keep up with the battery usage. I am very pleased with my set-up which is made by Specialized, the PreView Xe for the front, and the Flashback model for the rear. They are moderately priced, lightweight and VERY practical.

As for the road bikes, I owned a Cannondale touring bike($500 +/-) then a Cannondale Hybrid ($425), and also a Giant OCR-3($625 +/-). The Giant isn't good for a touring rack though, the others were great. That's my opinion. And as for you Ewker, maybe you 'll need to eat some pasta before you ride- I NEVER am sore from cycling!
And for Peddles- I still use toe clips, easy enough for in/out and getting a good spin.
I think that'll cover it from here.

Yellowstone and vicinity
OK, I finally got my cycling pics up from my Yellowstone and Beartooth mountains rides. I did a lot of biking this summer on the roads in the NE corner of the Park and mountain biked up on the old mining roads in the Beartooths. The highway through the Lamar Valley is great for long rides from the Northeast gate to Roosevelt Lodge at Tower Jct.; 30 miles one-way. Lots of wildlfe along the way.

I need to start taking my camera with me when I go riding. This morning the fog was lifting across the fields. The horses were visable enough to see. I bet it would have made a good picture.

I did get a computer for my bike yesterday but didn't have it on this morning. Hopefully I can get out this week and try it out.

Crits are nasty.

I've done some crits as a fun way to change up training, but locking horns with another rider and bumping wheels is scary, especially when riding skinnies (23mm).

I had a friend who was near the front of the race and locked bars with another rider (under skilled and in his first race) who was taken to the hospital after the crash. He was OUT.

Nope, no longer race crits but they are fun to watch.

from roadbike.com
Last Saturday Morning

On Saturday morning, a roadie gets up early, as he has
for so many Saturday morning rides, and softly slips
out of the bedroom.

He dresses quietly in the next room, grabs his helmet
and water bottles, and goes out to pump the tires. As
the garage door opens, he's confronted by an icy,
windswept rain.

He's ridden before in these conditions. He doesn't like
it, but when it's Saturday morning he never misses. He
ponders the dismal conditions and then retreats to the
kitchen to tune a small TV to the Weather Channel.

The forecast only sounds worse. This is one Saturday
when he just can't summon the determination.

With a sigh, he slips off his shoes, quietly returns to
the bedroom, undresses and slips back into bed.

There he cuddles up to his wife's back and whispers,
"The weather out there is terrible."

To which she sleepily replies, "Can you believe my
husband went riding in that crap?"

I ended up only doing a 36 mile ride today. It started raining after I had gone about 8 miles. I didn't rain hard but the roads were slick. This was my first time to ride in the rain so I took it slow. I only avg 13 mph for the entire ride but I did get up to 38 mph going down a hill. I was a little nervous about it esp with it being wet but I made it.

Lots of riders out today enjoy the roads even in the rain.

Off Roading Rocks!
Had a blast with the boy out on the off road trails at Jonathan Dickinson State Park. Club Scrub, local mtn bike club keeps the trails maintained per their agreement with the state park guys, and they do a great job.

Going endo sucks though. Got my leg caught between handlebars and frame after getting flipped crossing a couple of logs. Ouch - nice bruise forming though.

The boy had a blast too!

Roam, I hate doing endo's on a mtn bike. What happened to you sounds like what I did on a ride. Leg looked like one big bruise, knee had 1/2 a grapefruit growing out one side and a tennis ball out the other.

Thank goodness I haven't had a road bike wreck. No way I want road rash up and down the legs, arms, face..etc

I went out Sat and did a training ride for an event I am doing in 3 weeks. This ride was fully supported with stops every 12 or so miles. The total ride ended up being 47 miles. I figure I need to do one more long ride before the event.

I am doing the MS 2004 Jack and Back Bike Ride. It is a charity ride for MS. The ride down to the Jack Daniels Distillery can be either 55 or 74 miles. The 74 mile ride has more hills than the 55 mile ride. I am thinking about doing the 74 down and coming back the 55 miles the next day.

I am looking forward to doing this event. They have the maximum of 700 riders signed up and 125 volunteers ready to go.

There was a big bike race in SF yesterday, sponsored by T-Mobile. Lance was supposed to ride, but backed out at the last minute because of a sore knee. But he actually showed up to watch the race, which was good of him. One of the local radio news guys said that his friend was able to get Lance to autograph his Livestrong bracelet, which was meaningful because his friend's friend died of cancer last year....

Rode 55 miles yesterday 3:35 of actual ride time.

Was out for closer to 4:15. Stopped for a gatorade refill, pee and status/route report to wie at home, brief mechancial, bottle of water/pee, two more brief mechanicals.

Went over a section of pavement (grooved) being prepped for paving .. .it caused soemting to start clicking on the bike. Dismounted a few ties trying to trackit down .. its was driving me nuts.

FInally took both tires off the bike, looked everthing over, put them back on . . .it seemed to go away, (although I thought Iheard it crop up a coupleof times).

After the ride I cleaned my chain and re-lubed, took the tires off and wiped the bike down.

Am suppose to ride tomorrow morning. Will be my last ride before Sunday's century.

I am not sure about the century at all. 55 was plenty long enough. I just don't have very many long rides under my belt. There is a metric century running at the same time that I may do (62 miles) while my friends do the 100 miles. It would be nice if they ran the same route so I could make a judgement call after 50 miles.
