Did 21 miles on the Natchez Trace. Almost got ran over by an RV who decided he wanted to see how close he could get to me. Talk about reach out and touch someone, we had to be less than 12" apart” 12:51:24 PM 4/05/05 “What's even more fun Ewker, is when an RV gets up close and personal like that and the driver didn't retract the steps before taking off that day. =O” 1:17:01 PM 4/05/05 “BANG! A fist on the side wall of an RV makes a huge noise.” 1:20:03 PM 4/05/05 “I go to the Dr. on Thursday. If cleared I should be able to try my new metal hip out on the road bike. I hate riding indoors on a trainer. Thank goodness I live in the south.” 1:46:49 PM 4/05/05 “twiggy...ouch that would hurt. pathman, thought went thru my mind. I also thought about laying the bike over in the grass also if I had banged the RV” 2:10:52 PM 4/05/05 “Hey Ewker, don't you know that's what water bottles are for.....you should always carry an extra one......... so you haveone to chuck at overly friendly motorists!! lol” 9:31:17 PM 4/05/05 “Arky, Did you have a hip replacement surgery? last edited: 4/05/05 9:40:35 PM” 9:39:48 PM 4/05/05 “I usually have great weather down here in San Diego and can ride year round. I've already done two Double Centuries this spring, one in Death Valley and the other in Solvang, CA. Plus a Century in Palm Springs. But occassionally I'll head up to the Eastern Sierra and do some riding. This ride was from last Thanksgiving in the rain and snow: http://community.webshots.com/album/224311889NubUGs For cold weather riding, I usually wear the arm and leg warmers, and a water-proof jacket. The leg warmers only go to the upper thigh and the shorts go over them. The arm sleeves can easily be rolled down if the weather warms up or I'm doing a climb; pull 'em back up for the descent. http://community.webshots.com/photo/135729375/138290454tbAAeJ Got a hilly 77 mile ride in last Saturday. What's nice about the area I live in is once you get away from the coast, there are plenty of hills and canyons to make the ride tough. Here's another reason I don't like riding the coast as much: http://community.webshots.com/photo/31767028/85025445ORFkIh The roads are more crowded and it's easier to get cut off by a car and smash into it and lose the tip of your finger! This happened almost two years ago.” 12:53:05 AM 4/06/05 “RichB, I had what is called a hip resurfacing. It's a newer procedure where they cap the head of the femur instead of whacking off the bone & shoving a rod down your thigh. See the "Arky In India" thread for more info.” 8:37:44 AM 4/06/05 “The trail was dry and superfast for my group ride last night. I'm definitely faster this year. With only 15 miles of trail to ride I kept pace with the FFG's. At least kept them in my sights! Rode with "not quite reckless" abandon. WoooooHoooo! 80 degrees and sunny.” 10:06:45 AM 4/06/05 “80 degrees in April?! Don't you live in Michigan? I thought it was cold there... Sounds like you had a great ride!” 10:22:14 AM 4/06/05 “YES I DO TWIGGY! You should have seen the trailhead. Looked like a zoo. Everyone was there.” 11:32:58 AM 4/06/05 “I have a killer spin class in 1 hour. Someone say something inspiring. I am tired feel like lead and am unmotivated. In Joe Freil's Cyclist Training Bible we are in Build 2. basically death. you know how exerciseand other pyscholgists emphasize postive self talk???? =:0 I know I can't do this. I am not good enough. I am tired. I just wanna go sit in the sun and nap.” 11:59:50 AM 4/06/05 “Arky, I just read your thread about your surgery. That was really heads up that you were able to seek out that procedure. It's amazing that you are able to backpack again afterward. I think I just have some bursitis going on, but I've given some thought now as to the long term effects of hiking with a pack. This probably deserves a thread of its own, but I wonder if many years of lugging a loaded pack up and down mountains can degrade ones hip structure and ruin the cartilage. Directly loading the pelvis with a hipbelt to transfer all the weight may be sending shock waves into the joint that can't be too good over the long haul. After this injury heals, I'm going to moderate my hiking and hike slower and more carefully. Glad to hear you are doing so well with your new hip.” 12:09:57 PM 4/06/05 “you CAN do it lee, you know you'll feel better after! just concentrate on the after part... =D” 12:32:40 PM 4/06/05 “Lee, you look exhausted from all that yelling last week at sarge...lol” 12:49:25 PM 4/06/05 “Ewker .. ..LOL. probably. Got through it. if you put your mind on hold and just listen to (and follow) the yelling you can get through it. I need someone yelling like that when I am on my real bike approaching a hill. 4 minutes on a hill climb at "maximal effort" for the last 90 seconds of each 4 minute cycle we were to be thoroughly anerobic. The 3 minutes of recovery. We did 4 sets. Average heart rate over the 45 minutes (warm up, some cool down and the intervals)133. max heart rate .. . .hit a few times .. ..was 174. I have never done an official heart rate test .. ..but I figure 174 is about 95% of 183 and 90% of 193. I figure my max heart rate on the bike is probably around 185-188. .and I was at 92%-95%. I had an iced shot of french roast coffee before going . . ..and just tried to turn my brain off.” 3:31:59 PM 4/06/05 “That does not sound like fun, lee. Coffee gets me out the door for my morning commute, more often than not. Visualizing riding in the morning sun also gets rolling, soon all is good. Nice ride home tonight, 70F minimal breeze, sunny. Many people out. My Lance Armstrong Foundation, Peloton Project” 11:03:19 PM 4/06/05 “Woo Hoo! I am cleared to ride. No more pedaling while staring at my garage door. Soon I will be cruising on the hwy wondering how I got out of shape this quick.” 1:13:15 PM 4/07/05 “Congrats Arky!” 1:22:42 PM 4/07/05 NEW BIKE “I'm so stoked....In a few weeks I'll have my new bike.. Kuipps Summa....all ultegra” 2:47:16 PM 4/07/05 Tea “No such bikes exisists. or at the least its not googleable. I suspect that your spulling is at the root of it. If you got the information accurate, then we could google the bike, and share in your joy. See how accuracy can be a good thing? PS: Google suggested Kupps as an alternative. Well . . .google "Kupps Summa" and see what the top five listings are. So at least I owe you thanks for that. last edited: 4/07/05 3:55:02 PM” 3:51:34 PM 4/07/05 second try “one "p" ”3:57:24 PM 4/07/05 “Got out this weekend twice. It was gorgeous in CT. Saturday morning I rode at 7:30. 44.5 miles. Relatively flat. A fast 12.5 headed south with a tail breeze down to long island sound. Then I turned east/northeast into a crosswind that sometimes was at my head for 12 or so miles. The road was as flat as it gets around here (Route 1 right along Long Island sound). Then I turned north directly into the headwind for 20 or so back home. Increasing hilly as I went. Finishing with the 3 mile climb from the CT river to my house. Ridetime 2:49 SSunday was a quick 21 miles with the ride group a mix of hills. We went out at 7:00am. I felt pretty good. 1:18 .” 9:05:08 AM 4/11/05 “Cool bike! Rode single track on Saturday 70 degrees and sunny! I'm riding hills so much better this year. Now to work on bike handling skills. Ran trails on Sunday - bikes are faster. :-)” 10:01:43 AM 4/11/05 “I road my bike on Saturday. 22 miles with 1,500 feet of elevation gain and then I headed to the bike store and picked out a new bike. It's only partially paid for, so I don't have it yet. I bought a Specialized Dolce - a woman's road bike that comes in assorted sizes. It's going to be nice having a bike that's not too big for me.” 10:32:47 PM 4/11/05 “Does anyone here go to spinning classes?” 10:33:28 PM 4/11/05 “wingding0, I havent gone to any spinning classes but I spent my winter pedaling away on a stationary bike, a great workout if you push hard. I notice that I am far stronger from it.” 5:01:00 AM 4/12/05 “Rode the morning route with the group. Went well. 20.4 miles. COLD. 28 when I headed out. ugh. Wingding -- yes. I take spinning classes a couple fo times a week.” 9:31:31 AM 4/12/05 “Sounds like you all are doing well and having fun! I'll get out there biking some day this year...if it ever stops snowing...” 9:59:47 AM 4/12/05 “I'm going to try a spinning class tonight if I can get there early enough before all the bikes are spoken for. I'm looking forward to it.” 11:59:47 AM 4/13/05 “wingding, spin class is fun but it will kick your butt. Go your own pace esp the first time. Plus you can always back off as needed.” 12:41:11 PM 4/13/05 “Ewker, the good thing about spin class is you can't be dropped.” 1:52:49 PM 4/13/05 “no Arky, the good thing about spin class is the hot female in front of you =)” 2:28:16 PM 4/13/05 “the hot female didn't do it for me in spinning class but i did get a good workout. you're right ewker - spinning does kick your butt” 8:03:25 AM 4/14/05 “Too many cigarettes made my 12 miles yesterday pretty damned hard :D Just now getting my legs back underneath me from a long winter break. I'm shopping for new pedals/cleets to go with my new shoes. Right now I'm using my old 10 year old mountian biking shoes and pedals.” 8:07:46 AM 4/14/05 “11 miles with 750 feet gain after work today. This topo software works just as well for cycling as it does for hiking.” 9:12:20 PM 4/14/05 “I use the topo for my bike rides, too. Very busy week, no riding for Pathman. :(” 6:44:50 AM 4/15/05 48 “Chaperoned my first grade son's trip to the Yale Peabody museum yesterday. Cool dinosaurs. Were back to the school by 1:30. I was on my bike by 2:00pm. Put in 48 miles. Some hills. Some flat. About 2:55. What was BEAUTIFUL. WONDERFUL. Was the tailwind. Coming back up from the shore I had a gorgeous tailwind. For the last 15 miles it helped me out. A flat to uphill grade on which I fought a headwind last Saturday at 14-15 mph pushing hard . . . .yesterday the same flat to uphill grade . . ..20-23 mph spinning fast. It feels so good to spin freely at a fast pace. Physciallly, pschologically . . .especially at the tail of a long ride. I felt strong and fast . ..versus a headwind in which I would have felt slow, logey and tired. I got off the bike at my son's baseball practice and sat in the wind and decreasing temps. My wife had brought a sweatshirt sweatpants for me .. but i froze . ..not the best recovery!” 8:23:57 AM 4/15/05 “wow, great job lee. I rode the exercise bike at the gym yesterday - put it on level 8 and then 9 for 45 minutes. I did about 13 miles but didn't go anywhere.” 12:13:10 AM 4/21/05 “I biked a loop outside tonight for 30 minutes. Whoa!!! My thigh muscles need WORK!!! >8-O” 12:20:09 AM 4/21/05 “I just had a compact crank put on my road bike. I went for a rather hilly ride yesterday, and I kinda miss some of my biggest gears. I guess I will have to just exercise a little more.” 6:45:27 AM 4/21/05 “Did my morning ride with the group. There is a new guy on who just hammers. At one point 27 mph on a flat to uphill. Ugh . . ..its a little much that early in the morning. I thought I could take a little break as we crested a hill . . .but they hammered down the other side . . ..and the gap widened . . . . Boy, once the gap opens, its harder than hell to close it. So I didn't. they eventually backed off and I caught up to them.” 9:07:00 AM 4/21/05 “Lee, did it seem like they were just barely pedaling while you were killing yourself.” 9:08:04 AM 4/21/05 “and to think I'm averaging 12 or 13 miles an hour when my ride is 50 percent uphill. 27 miles and hour - wow. I'm going to go for a ride after work tonight. The traffic is so bad right after work though - I hate dealing with it. Maybe getting up early in the morning would be better.” 10:42:24 AM 4/21/05 “biking. what is that? Training for another Century? HA! Work and life intrude another week.” 11:22:34 PM 4/21/05 “lee, that sounds like one heckuva group of riders,I cant hardly fall down a hill at 27mph. Great training trying to keep up though.” 5:20:15 AM 4/22/05 “Before I got a new job back in Sept., I cycled to work every day. It was only 9.5 miles away and they had a shower I could use. But now it's 16 miles and no shower, plus I travel more. So I can usually ride only 2 to 3 days a week, if at all. But this week is the first time I was able to ride everyday. And on the way home yesterday, when I got to the bottom of a hill, a guy on a motorcycle passed me and yelled, "You made 35." I guess he ment 35 MPH.” 7:28:34 AM 4/22/05 “wow, thats a pretty good speed there ghost.” 7:39:30 AM 4/22/05 Jump to Page << prev
