First let me say that we (Bush the 1st for not going to bagdad in 91; the UN for not putting teeth in its sanctions)are so far down the current road that we have no choice but to remove Saddam. I agree that he cannot stay in power. And have agreed to that . . . I am logically committed to the proposition of war.

I do not believe, even for a moment that sanctions and inspections can work. They haven't worked for 12 years. The UN has no political will to maintain its focus. France, Russia and China proved that 5 or more years ago in undermining the first set of inspections.




HOWEVER. re: top dog.

We WON'T always be top dog. I believe that it is exactly in actions such as these that we will sow the seeds of our own fade from power.

25, 50 75 years from now . . . the Pax Americana can't last forever . . .there is nothing in history to suggest that it will . . .or should.


I am not suggesting a huge war . . .I don't think I'll wake up one day to chinese radio broadcast and the WSJ printed in Chinese . . . I simply think that America has been AScendant for some 200 years . . .if, looking back years from now, this period of time (the early 21st century) was determined to be the peak of our power and dominance . . . I will not be suprised. We will, eventually, become DEscensdant.


Hey . . .maybe we'll be lucky and just end up as a Britain . . .they are muddling along just fine after their period in the sun.

Then, of course, there is Portugual . . .nice place to visit . .but . . .what's happened to them since 1450 or so???

Or how about Mongolia????? Geeeez . ..let's hope we don't end up like that!!!


China is already moving towards a market economy. Jimmney . . .that won't take nearly the 25 years I'm talking about.


Oh . . .and whose to say that 75 years from now a market economy will be the be all and end all that it is today??

Again . . .I think we need to take out Saddam, by force. And I think we need to continue to pursue the war against terroism wherever it leads us. But, in the end . . .I think it will contribute to the slow unraveling of our dominance in the world. Perhaps even be the single largest contributor to that unraveling.”
