Wow, I remember the APE in later years. I was just getting into the brodcasting business and there were a few publications that would print job opportunities: 'Radio and Records' or 'Broadcasting' Magazine. At that time, the Grease Man was hot on that station. Their competition was advertising for a morning guy. They said they were looking for "grease relief."

Was too young at the time you were talking about to be concerned with anything outside the New York area. Radio was really something in those days.

As for the Seger song, that's his very early days. I believe his band was "The Bob Seger System" or something like that...

That's right, he did call his band that name. If you can find a recording of the song let me know.

WPDQ and the Big Ape fought the ratings war every day. And it made for great listening. I can't remember the DJs names but they were characters. One guy drove around in an old car that had what amounted to a square jungle gym welded on the top, hood, and trunk. It rose ten foot over the top. He festooned it with everything including a kitchen sink. It looked like a rolling junk yard. The Florida Hwy Patrol finally stopped him and inpounded the car. He did a live broadcast as they were doing it. Sounds juvenile now but at the time it was fun and I was about 14 years old.

It may sound juvenile to some, but I will say this. Radio back then was a hell of a lot more creative than what is being put out now. It was a bit more innocent times and the stunts reflected it. Now, it's how far you can push the envelope and how much shock you can introduce to your audience's systems, for the most part...

i saw part of that VH1 program too, Treebeard! their speeches were soooo good...Springsteen's especially rocked. i was L'ing my A off when he said something about Bono having a messianic complex. hahaha!! U2 suck lately if you ask me, but they definitely belong in the Hall of Fame.

Yeah, Lyra. Bruce made me laugh on several occasions. He also said something about Bono and his Irish mullet (can't remember the wording). It really was a fine speech...
