Let's see... Gemini is from Germany, I think, and Newgirl and Pathman have travelled there quite a bit.

Bacpacking advice: Don't carry so much! <grin>

That sounds very cool beny, best of luck and hope you have fun. If you ask some more specific questions, several of the good folks here will be more than happy to help you out.

Anybody got any European backpacking experience? From what I've seen, it's monumentally different from backpacking here in the U.S. Basically, there's not a lot of walking or camping involved, you just have all your stuff in a backpack and carry it with you on the train as you go from one hostel to another. Is that what you're talking about, beny?

I know what you mean, jellybean.
It was a weird night for a lot of us. I didn't sleep worth a damn, and even woke up a couple hours early this morning.

I guess it is different, but the basics of carrying your stuff you need with you are the same. Bit's right to question what exactly you'll be doing though, as that makes a difference. Also wildness areas tend to be smaller in Europe, (with some exceptions) so it's more difficult to get away from civilization.

I can't really help. Last time I went for a vacation I got lost in my home town. Wasn't into backpacking back then either. I know a lot of europeans do backpack and take the train. I think there is a website out that gives details about this.
"backpacking in europe" or something like that.

Yeah here it is:
http://www.alleuroperail.com/backpacking-europe.htm

I do remember that's what most Germans did back then. For me, I was the hitchhiker without a backpack.

It was pretty safe back then to hitchhike but times are changing, and the crime rate is higher now. Not sure if I would hitchhike again.

I know that they have the open borders now, but heard that some still want to see passports. I am not sure what the Americans need. I have an amercian passport now, but did not try to travel outside of Germany. I think a passport should be fine tho.

Oh shut, you are from Croatia, so you should be okay and probably know your way around better then me living in the us for 13 or 14 years.

As for destinations: Swiss alps of course, Italian alps are a must. Bavarian area in Germany is very nice too. Oh gosh...Wait, I am coming! I'm going with you!

gotto agree, you got to see those places, and the Pyrenees, and Scotland, gotto get up to the Highlands, Isle of Skye and the Cuilins are fantastic, especially in mid summer, it barely gets dark. I've always fancied Scandanavia but I've bever been there.

Beny, will you actually be in the wilderness or are you going to just be traveling from city to city? Give us some details and we can give you loads of info.

I think Phaedrus is half French and half insane. That is pretty European.
