Basil Hayden is lovely stuff, but a touch pricey for what you get, IMO. Check out Old Grandad. Good bourbon (almost exactly equal, in my rating to Makers Mark) for about 13 bucks a .750.

Since I have not been drinking, I have found life much better. Now, if I catch a woman, I can remember why I was chasing her

You guys have mede me thirsty. Guess I'll have another glase of prune juice, 2002.

Beer chearer than food?
I'm 6'4" and gave up a 12-20 per day beer habit. The amount of food needed to fill the caloric deficient is far more staggering than the affects of the beer.

Funny you should mention Old Grandad and Basil Hayden together. Jim Beam basically has two bourbon recipes, one of which has a high rye content....both Basil Hayden and Old Grandad are made using that recipe. BH is just supposedly the cream of the crop.

Now, Maker\'s Mark OTOH, is the bourbon polar opposite of BH and OGD \'cause it uses a recipe where wheat replaces rye. The best wheated bourbons, IMHO, are made by Old Rip Van Winkle.

Father Ghoul - I still say 6', but age has lowered me a little. And there is still a roll around the middle. Maybe I should change my name to jellybelly.

Labrot & Graham Woodford Reserve

I never liked whiskey until I tried this stuff!

Woodford Reserve is good stuff. If you like it, try Old Forester. WR is actually the best barrels of the Old Forester stock. It's interesting that of the many, many brands of bourbon, they're all made by only a handful of distilleries.

Deathmarch, try some Old Forester. Malt Advocate magazine voted it a bourbon "best buy". It's the well brand in my household and it's the same price, if not a bit cheaper than Jim Beam. It's heads and tails better than Jim or Jack, IMHO.

Timbro Van Winkle rye is good stuff indeed. The last of the Family Reserve 13 y.o. is on the shelves now, there's no more of it to be bottled. The 12 y.o. version will be around for a while though. I had the pleasure of chatting about bourbon with Mr. Julian Van Winkle himself a few years back in Bardstown, KY. He's quite a character!

I just love it when a thread that you haven't thought about in awhile surfaces once again. November is around the corner; Almost time for the 2nd Annual Backcountry Bourbon Tasting I would think.

Some Things Are Worth The Price
I did it, yesterday I got Jim Beam's best bourbon...Bookers.

It's the only uncut, unfiltered, straight-from-the-barrel bourbon on the market. When I took my first taste, I couldn't believe how good it was, strong with a heated bite (~126 proof), but tasty as heck. I thought prior to purchase At $40 a bottle it better be good. and believe me, it is.

Yep Buddur, it really is that good. But with the price, I usually just limit myself to about two bottles a year....and stick with the Knob Creek and Woodford Reserve the rest of the time...but am always trying something new.

It's a little sweeter than most, but I love Maker's Mark. I've got a bottle of Knob Creek, and it's good, but I still like MM better.

Old Rip Van Winkle is the best bourbon, hands down. All other bourbons are posers.

sorta close but not exactly....

I have developed a strong liking for Dewars "white label". I know squat about scotch but really like this stuff. I also found a really nice rum thats excellent straight. Its Haitian (my buddy served there and turned me on to it) its called Barbancourt, you can get in 4 or 10 year old varities. I will get a bottle of the 10 next time.

Dewar's is excellent for a blended Scotch. The only other blend I can think of that approaches it is Chivas Regal. Of course, I've never had any of the other fine blends, like Johnny Walker and the like.

I'm a single-malt snob, but not every bar has a single-malt scotch on their shelf. So, I'll usually go for White Label or Chivas. If they don't have either, then it's bourbon time!
