Favorite Quick Fix

“As I look around the house and feel all of the pressures of obligation, the plan for a quick overnight hike congeals in my mind. Somewhere close but quiet. Hike in Sat afternoon, Hike out Sun morning and still have time to accomplish the necessities this weekend. My quick fix is sections of the Waterloo-Pinckney Trail southern Michigan. Where's yours?”

“I don't have a quick fix, anywhere worth hiking and camping is hours and hours away from here.”

Mine is the Cockaponset state forest in CT. I can hike off into it from my house.”

“Wilmington, NC When warm weather comes, I can get out for a beach camp or someplace on the river, but till then your just sleeping on the ground, flat ground at that.”

“Oooh, unfortunately I'm not in the "quick fix" category because I have to plan everything out. Just picking up and going is tough when you have small kids. I suppose I could do it if there was ever a weekend where my wife didn't have something planned, but as it is, I have to reserve weekends far in advance, or it's "Sorry Charlie"...”

“my favorite quick fix, if I don't feel like driving for a couple of hours is the congaree swamp about 10 miles from columbia. Nothing hard, but very beautiful, and you can get 10 or even more miles out of it. I normally take my kids or at least Cameron (the one that loves to hike) with me if go there.”

“If reaallllly feel the need to get away though, I can always just go up to Monte Sano for a few hours. It always helps.”

You can do almost anything with it”

“I live adjacent to the Catskill Park. (1/4 mile away)Adirondacks are 2 hrs away & my hiking partner lives in the Adirondack Park.”

“I can head out my back door for a few hours and snowshoe, ski or just walk in the woods and fields.
There are some nice places within 15-45 minutes - state parks, arboretum, public woods, hiking trails, my parent's farm - for day things. Overnight backpacks are a couple hours away.

If I want a no-brainer, feels-like-home hike, I go to Tumbledown Mountain, about and hour and a half away.”

“Good hiking a quarter mile from our home. Mountain with 2000 ft elevation gain or a park with a couple of miles of easy trails.”

Been snowshoeing with the new girlfriend behind her place (flat). Nordic ski-ing with her behind my place (rolling orchard and maple bush with some forest and fields). Ski-ing into Marcy Dam with her. There's also ski-ing to Debar Mt. just inside the Adirondack Park, but it's been too warm and rainy here lately. Then there's the park Interpretation Centre and its ski trails. There's also the trail to Grassy Pond lean-to. Except for the Marcy Dam trailhead at South Meadows, everything's less than an hour away.

Then there's the Cottage at Lake Placid for dinner or the village pub (Rockburn Pub) when we get home - Newcastle, Kilkenny, Guiness, Harp, Rickard's (local) and the fantastic new chef from the city. So little tine, so little time.

“If I'm in NH I can hike from my house into the Sandwich Range and spend the night either at Flat Mtn Pond or BlackMtn Pond. If I'm in CT, I have to drive.”

“Ya Aero, about a two hour drive from here, up the 'Sea to Sky Highway' to Whistler. I'm not quite as far east, as I had indicated. More like where the 'A' in map, is printed.

Many of the peaks along the lower drainages are in the 4000 to 6000 feet range and make for lots of day hike options”
