First night Food
Ok, got a hike coming up in a couple of weeks and I am lookng for a meal idea for the first night. The only requirements are that I have to be able to cook it in a small teapot(Primus) and a small skillet(MSR). The first day is only a 6 miler so a little extra weight will not be too bad but I do not want to carry alot of trash out the rest of the weekend. There is almost no food that I will no at least eat once. So help me out with a good meal that will go with a cheap 2 liter bag of white or red.

Are you dehydrating the meal, Lt?

Could but I think I would prefer fresh or partially prepared, since it is the first night. I don't like to dehydrate my own.

ok LT
I love doing this.
cut up chicken and some veggies. you know carrotes, celery, taters, onions etc...

put it all in tinfoil and add some spices or BBQ sauce or heck both if you want to.
then wrap it all up.
freeze it the night before.
when you get to camp start a nice camp fire and just put the pouches right in the fire and let them cook.
or when you get to camp boil water and just throw in all the food and cook it until verggies are semi-hard (thtis is to your own taste)

either way it is a very yummy dish. w do it all the time.

good meal idea...
slice up some chicken, marinate it semi cook it and then freeze it. slice up some vegis, onions, peppers, mushrooms, etc...bring some tortilla shells and some spices. cook your vegis, then for the last minute toss in your your semi cooked (now defrosted) chicken and make your own Fajitas...bring some shredded jack cheese and sit back and enjoy a great meal.

Jerbear is the master of this style of meal. He made something like it at TC2 and they were freakin awsome. Go for it!!!

First night in?

Prepare 1-2 Filet Mignons how you like them and freeze them in a ziploc baggy one or two nights before. Keep on ice for the car ride and they will still be cold at dinnertime if you protect them in your pack. Fry 'em up in your skillet or cook over fire. Share with me... Yum!

Oh, pranks with spiders, snakes and toads in the camp. Generally disrupting behavior that kept the others up at night due to noise & laughter. Things sissy girls didn't appreciate. I did have help with this. We were the GS rejects. Jeez lighten up girls and have some FUN!

Definitely fresh grub the first night out, maybe even the second, depedinging on temp.

If you can have a fire, my first night meal is always a feast! Usually consists of steak or a marinated pork tenderlon. Have done cornish game hans spit roasted over the fire. Veggies in a foil packet, rice on the stove, etc.

If no fire avail, some sort of fajitas or stir fry is good, too.

The fajitas gave me a great Idea for Tacos, mmmm.... filet mignons sounds good too. I have instant mashed potatoes and dehydrated green beans.

Meals that are frozen are usually not thawed until the second night.

Hot Dogs and Marshmellows are my first night favorites. No muss no fuss and you can share.

Rosey and his backpacking meals. I need to get me a Rosey, since I love to eat. BTW, why are Pork Chops like the best damned food ever?

A couple of times I've gone to the local Cajun restaurant, gotten a big bowl of gumbo and a blackened filet Mignon to go. Cut up the filet into the gumbo and partially dehydrate, if you like (and freeze if necessary). It's Killer Diller.

There's got to be a million gumbo recipes on the 'net... just pick one you like.

(and I'm still looking for that Pilsner Urquell in the can!)

Lobsters are good also, LtHiker...
Just let them walk in front of you on the OLP and use a hiking stick to keep 'em in line. Don't forget to bring enough for everybody!

Eggs and sausage....just use your frying pan.

Get the precooked sausage and freeze it...put it with the eggs to keep then fresh.

I crack my eggs into a small nalgene bottle and wrap the frozen sausage around that.

Wanderer told us about taking eggs and dropping them into boiling water for a couple seconds (not sure how long)..it seems that it will cook a very thin section just under the shell and keep the eggs fresh for a long time.

Start with frozen Rock Lobster tails, just drop in boiling water for a few minutes.

Lots easier then having to tie them up at night, plus they walk too damn slow and can barely carry their own weight.......

Pick your favorite meal from a restaurant and then bring everything that you need. I have had shrimp scampy, bake flounder with crabmeat stuffing, a clam bake including the lobster (and yes they do walk slowly), steak with baked potatoe and a fresh salad. Almost anything is possible but remember:
1. to keep it cool
2: you must take care of the trash.
Of course don't forget the wine.
