“3/22/03 MOSCOW, Russia (Reuters) -- Russia vowed on Saturday to block any future moves by the United States and its allies to secure U.N. approval for the military action in Iraq and the post-war power structures they might set up there.

"Attempts will undoubtedly be made in the U.N. Security Council to find ways which would help legitimise the military operations and the post-war (political) set-up in Iraq," Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov told a conference outside Moscow.

"We will follow this very carefully and we will not, of course, give legitimacy to this action in the Security Council," he said.

Russia, which has big economic and oil interests in Iraq, aligned itself with France and China in opposing U.S.-led military action to topple Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein and disarm Iraq of banned weapons that Washington says it is holding.

All three powers as permanent members of the Security Council have the right of veto.

Ivanov, speaking later to journalists, echoed President Vladimir Putin's call on Thursday for an immediate halt to the U.S. and British offensive.

"I don't think Iraq needs a democracy brought on the wings of Tomahawk (missiles)," Ivanov said.

"Iraq is a wise nation and the Iraqis can build their future themselves. Therefore Russia once again calls for a halt to the war and a return to political attempts to find a solution," he said.

Lets talk about the future of the mideast instead.

Perhaps some of you might pontificate on the power struggle that will ensue once we depose saddam. Points like how we are going to ensure that a worse tyrant doesnt take saddams place would be interesting. For a bit of historical referance consider WW1 where we got rid of (Wilhelm?) and watched while a far worse dictator took his place democraticlly voted in by the german people. There is hardly a country bordering Iraq that doesnt have a claim against Iraqi lands and turkey is already menuvering against the kurds. In a way Im glad that the brits are being considered to administrate Iraq after the war, They have a lot of experiance managing distant lands from their imperialistic days.

Lets not forget to discuss the future of terrorism either. Considering that once again we are interfering in mid-east affairs it is fairly certain the fanatical elements of that area will only hate us more then ever. It is an almost foregone conclusion that there will be more terror attacks on the US and of course more security will be required to deal with the problem as well.”

Here are a few facts: Saddam is Suni, Al-Qaeda is Shiite. If you don't understand the difference between these two sects of Islam, then you won't understand anything about the Middle East. Iraq is 80 % Shiite (like Iran). A TRULY democratic election in Iraq can mean only one thing - another Shiite government in the Middle East (in case you missed the first sentence in this paragraph, Iraq's current government is Suni). The only other Shiite government is Iran (the Taliban was also Shiite, but they're no longer in control, thank God). Iran, if you'll remember, is part of George II's "Axis of Evil."

There is NO WAY that George II is genuine when he says that he wants a democratic government in Iraq, because he knows that the people of Iraq would vote for yet another Shiite Islamic State, given the chance. George I knew this as well - that's why American forces disarmed the rebellion in Iraq following Gulf War I, and allowed the Republican Guard free rein in crushing the insurrection (source: A. Cockburn and P. Cockburn, "Out of the Ashes: the Ressurection of Saddam Hussein" - a very well referenced book).

We'll see yet another puppet government that we'll have to prop up for decades at the cost of the American taxpayer while the Bush/Cheney oligarchies reap the rewards of their conquest. Meanwhile, back home, even hardworking middle-class taxpayers won't be able to afford health care, or even retire, for that matter. And another generation of recruits for Al-Qaeda are born.

By the way, I don't consider myself a pacifist. Some of you on this board may remember me voicing my support for going into Afghanistan - I felt like we had no choice. Apparently, most of the world didn't have a problem with us taking out the Taliban as well.

But now, George II has squandered all of the good will and support for the US that 9/11 generated, and has made the US an anathema the world over. I think it's ironic that Clinton can still travel to Europe and is welcomed like a returning hero, while even America's allies in this current "sacking" have quietly asked George II not to visit their countires, out of fear of the massive rioting that would ensue.”

Yes, it is not confirmed yet, but I don't doubt that it will be confirmed soon.

I am not going to argue with anyone about this issue. We all have different opinions and it took me month to realize what I really felt about this situation.

Now that we are at war we need to support the US and our troops. We have to stick together. Arguements among people in the US will just poor gasoline on a fire. Will just give all those other countries more fuel to write their stories. See things they want to see, but disregart things they should look at a little closer. Just like I said it took me a long time to realize.
