During the Bush Fighter days he flew an F102 which at that time was a tactical intercept...(meaning it shot down enemy aircraft) now there was no call for that specific skill need in Vietnam (kinda like there were few Navy Torpeado aircraft used in Germany during the Second World War).
However, the F-102 did have a unique role incase of incoming nukes from Cuba or the south. The Interceptor Pilot was ordered to "eliminate" the missile. The only way this would happen is by direct impact...you fly into the missile.
Now by contrast John "I have a Hat" Kerry who was well on his way to winning 30 medals or at least forging his way to them, got out early and then lied in a Senate Panel while in uniform.
