Ultra-Light Camping Tips from Iraqi WarView MessagesViewing posts 1 to 9 of 9 messages posted.
“Watching TV, I saw a report of the refugees in the mountains camping out after a night of freezing rain. They were using plastic sheets for tent flys, and cooking with small lightweight wood burning stoves. I couldn't read the brand, nor the the TV reporter as the useres for a gear review. Many a Appalachian Thru-Hiker encountered similar conditions with similar equipment. I did enjoy watching a replay of an Iraqi General giving a televised briefing to the Iraqi citizens flinching and the curtins rattling with a nearby bomb strike. Just like being in a tent with a close by lightning strike. I wonder what other parallels to backpacking can be gleened from the media coverage in this war?” 6:40:44 AM 3/23/03 “At least they shouldn't encounter any difficulties in digging a cathole...” 7:15:20 AM 3/23/03 “Some of those are mighty big catholes.” 7:27:11 AM 3/23/03 “While watching the news reports, one ultralight tip I picked up on was this... if you lash your backpack to an Abrahms tank, your load becomes almost nil ...although when traveling through dry topography, the gear can get kinda dusty. Shocknawe!” 6:42:30 PM 3/23/03 “Yea, and an M1 A1 would make a great bear canister and with one of those babys you could leave the pepper spray home.” 6:48:14 PM 3/23/03 “on the news they said the marines are carrying 15-20 liters of water at any given time. those guns they carry are small cannons too. i don't know how much they weigh but i'd say at least 20 pounds.” 6:57:03 PM 3/23/03 “These guys are carrying at least a 100 lbs. of gear.” 6:58:41 PM 3/23/03 “Yeah ...all that weight ...that's why they bring tanks along on their backpacking trips.” 7:30:22 PM 3/23/03 “Some of those soldiers looked like binks with 3 cases of beer on their back.” 7:49:33 PM 3/23/03
