Hello everyone.

I am WVaBackpacker. I've lurked on this site for quite a while and I've decided to come out of the closet and introduce myself.

Some of you post on backpacker.com and know me there as wvabackpacker. I've decided that I like both forums and I'm going to start posting here. I thought it cordial to introduce myself rather than bust in and start posting.

Even though my handle is "wvabackpacker" I live in Ohio, I just like to backpack and camp in WVa. I started my first trip on the trip pages on this site. It is titled "BEER in the Hills." Everyone is welcome to join.

Anyway, I just thought I'd say hi! Begin newbie and WV bashing now...

French Joke
A little boy comes home from school and goes to his dad. He tells him that some older boys were discussing something that really bothered him. The dad asked him what it was. The boy told him that they told him about anal sex and that he wanted to know if people really did that. His dad assured him that people did indeed do that, but that it was very dangerous as "That's how French people are made"

Welcome to the site that has folks with thicker skins, with a ribald sense of humor, and with more miles on their feet. And always remember, West Virginia leads the United States in the number of hunters falling out of their tree stands. Really.

Hi wvabackpacker...welcome.

And since you know "cordial" and how to spell and punctuate, I'm quite sure you know "rhetorical."

And one more thing, just to make the welcome complete...

I just spent two nights there with some of the kids.

We hiked in from the mouth of the creek and up Green Mountain Trail to Possession Camp and back.

Welcome aboard wvbackpacker. Was down to the mountain state for a flying trip Saturday (WVHC windmill committee meeting in Canaan Valley). It was my first trip "home" since I broke my leg on the Sods last summer. Damn, it felt good.

At which point in time was the incest post removed? Hmmmm? It occured just after the 'comma splice'.

O Well. My links won't send you running to the Task Manager to kill a runaway browser like Violin's will (or give you the dry heaves) but they do have big words that make some peoples' heads hurt (or so they've said)... I seem to recall a topology page I linked to once... something about 'the number of holes' in a genus-1 object (like teacups and innertubes, donchaknow).

Tom T
I drove down to Canaan Valley for a meeting of the windmill committee Saturday. I drove up onto the plateau on 93, went to Mount Storm, then down to the power plant, then to Davis and Thomas to see the Backbone Mountain wind farm.

From a distance, they do not seem too bad. Up close, say within two miles, they are oppressively huge. Near the base of a tower, they storm the senses - real shock and awe! The turning blades above gave me a sense of reverse vertigo. I had to look away to get my balance.
Then I drove down to Canaan Valley for the meeting. Cabin Mountain was still socked in with snow for the most part. I understand there is a huge drift blocking FS 19 between its junction with FS 75 and the picnic ground. Other than that the routes are supposedly open.

Jonathan Jessup tells me they want to put a ski resort on the west flank of Porte Crayon, from top to bottom. It would be the greatest vertical drop in the east, and also screw up another natural view. Not sure how that will turn out just yet.

From the meeting I drove to North River in Virginia to camp overnight, then met Cynthia for a day hike in Shenandoah yesterday.

Hey WVaBackpacker!

Where do you like to go backpacking in WVa?

I live in Maryland and have been a fan of the Mountain state for 30 years.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone! I was so hoping to get called a troll and you guys didn't let me down!

Tom Terrific--No, I've never been to Otter Creek Wilderness. I might have to look into it. I plan on doing a lot more weekend trips this year.

Mapleleaf--I can't fill out my profile! I've tried doing it several times and it won't remember my informaton. I emailed Matt about it and haven't heard back from him yet. Hopefully he'll get that fixed soon.

Lyra--just turned 22/m, college student/exhibit engineer

Unfortuneately during my lurking I clicked on a link to Violin's website...

And JO, I backpack all over WVa. I've been to many places I can't remember. I own a cabin near Elkin's, WV which is near Spruce Knob, Seneca, Dolly Sods, Canaan VAlley, and Cranberry. My parents live near Charleston, so I visit Hawks Nest, Sutton, Summersville, Kanawha and Sherwood State forests, etc. My favorite place to visit is the Williams River in Monongahela National Forest--lots of hiking, fishing, and the scenic highway is awesome.
