No Longer Alone?

“From the beginning I'd been planning a solo trip, me and my dog Forest around the country. The date is coming up soon, I've finally decided on April 26 to take off. As the date nears, i continue training and preparing for what lies ahead. One thing that has always been in the back of my mind, is the fact that I would be alone the entire time. I'd always hoped that I could eventually find someone to share my experience with. Well... It's too early to tell for certain what will happen, but I may not be alone for this entire trip. I found one truely amazing girl (if you're reading this, you know who you are, no she doesn't post, but she may stop by once in a while) She's a senior in high school, an active backpacker, and she enjoys adventure, and is looking for an experience of a lifetime, I asked her to join me, and she hasn't shown any hesitation since. It's me and her, all the way. Now, I'm not showing any hesitation either, I'm so excited to have someone to share my experience with, especially someone as amazing as she.
what do you all think, does an experience such as this deserve to be shared with someone else, or would it be better off left to a solo trip, now I won't change my decision, but I'm just wondering what ideas you have, and I'll let you know what happens, In the end, I still may be solo, we'll see how it works out, i'm prepared either way.”

“That's cool, Simmer. Here's the thing I would recommend and this comes from the experience of traveling with several different women. It is in no way meant to be discouraging, only to raise some questions.

Have you traveled with this woman before on anything more than an overnight? I find it is best if you have traveled with them before on a shorter trip before you take any sort of trip of long duration. You have to know if you can handle their idosyncrasies. It helps if you both have similar patterns and travel habits as it is harder to deal with the situation when you can't just up and leave. It also makes dealing with unexpected situations better if both people can address it rationally without one person freaking out and the other person having to calm the wigging person AND deal with the situation. You know you can do it. She says she can do it. Has she proven to you in any way she can do it?

I enjoy traveling with my fiancee more than any other person and in fact, more than solo (granted there a time and place for both). Together, I know we make a great team when traveling and I've learned this through experience. I've also learned that I don;t travel well with some people and opt not to. This also is learned through experience.

I took my girlfriend, now wife, away from home when we were 19, back in 1980. We lived in a van for over a month in a campground in Craig, Colorado, then moved to Walden, CO, then Dubois, Wyoming, Casper, WY, and now Cody, WY.

“I know how it is to hike with girls, i spent 2 weeks with 3 of them, this current relationship is built on a lot of trust, and of course things could go wrong when we start, we'll work them out as they come along. If she does happen to read this thread, it'll be a good test, she'll be good humored enough to know it's all in fun, in it's seriousness.

to the extent of my trip, i'd gladly stop by and visit with any tt-ers willing (i know this has been discussed over the top, but it was asked) Also I'd be willing to have any tt-ers interested join me on short legs of my trip as I pass through their area, they can show me the ropes and give me good hints on where to go. I'm hoping everything will play out as I make my way on this journey.”

“Good for you Simer! Traveling is better when there's someone specila to share the experiences with, be it a significant other or a close friend. An experience like cross country travel will definately show you what this chick's made of. If you don't come away from the trip with a sweetheart, I hope you come away with a great friend.”

I don't know about what Sass said...I used to spend two weeks each summer sailing with a man I was supposedly in love with...know how many times we wanted to kill each other, LOL???

“The real pressure on something like this goes from seeing each other a bit to seeing each other 24/7. Try and factor in some time apart. If you're travelling it's often better to spend some time doing it on your own. You'll find you'll talk to more interesting people, and more people will talk to you. If you're sitting somewhere on your own people will come and talk to you. If you are there with someone else then they tend to think they are intruding and stay away.”
