Its Lawn Season.View Messages“Mike..you take pride in the front lawn..what about the back? :) I mowed our front yard Saturday..won't put as much attention to is as you do but hubby will fertilize and all that jazz. He commented to a guy at church how he has it made..he went fishing Saturday, came home, and the lawn was cut! I'll do the outside any day...I HATE HOUSEWORK!!!” 10:21:59 AM 3/27/03 “twigeater, selling the house and moving to Maine, huh? Where to? Up the country? Crack nicotine?!? That guy is cracked!” 10:33:56 AM 3/27/03 “I'm giving up on the lawn grass this year and instead I'm thinking about a Zen rock garden. And perhaps a pink flamingo too!” 11:04:20 AM 3/27/03 “For organic solutions, try organicgardening.com They also publish a paper version.” 11:25:05 AM 3/27/03 “I just use a 3 finger pinch of chewing tobacco per quart of water. I add liquid dish soap so it penetrates the ground. It's good for getting rid of fire ants too.” 11:33:54 AM 3/27/03 “Won't be doing any yard work here for a while. It rained from about 3:00 am Wed to 3:00 pm, then it turned to snow and it is still snowing. I had about 10-12 inches in the front AND back yard this morning when I left for work. Red Lodge ski area got another 18 to 24 inches and it's still snowing there now. Gonna have to get the girls out skiing again on Saturday, I guess. Total for Feb - 14 feet Total for March - 5 feet and counting Those are Red Lodge measurements, not Cody.” 11:34:33 AM 3/27/03 “TomT, I'm gonna go on walkabout in BSP - been my dream for a long time. ;) (ps - don't tell anybody, LOL)” 11:46:00 AM 3/27/03 Not Lawn but Garden news.. “My nursreyman, who is also a good friend of mine set me up yesterday. He ordered me (without my knowledge) some Hopps to grow in my garden this year. I am a homebrewer (He seems to enjoy that end of our friendship) nad thought I might like to grow my own hopps as well.. Ya just gotta love friends like that... Can't wait till fall when I sample my first brew with home grown hopps.” 12:16:14 PM 3/27/03 “Which variety of hops, BWD?” 12:20:39 PM 3/27/03 “My last place of 35 acres (further away from the mountains) I just let the fields grow, but it seemed to attract snakes which I'm not particulary fond of. They gave me an old beat up rooster (about 30-40 lbs huge) which wiped them out but it kept nailing me in the back of the legs. The final straw came when it attacked my 3 yr old daughter. Kept running after 2 solid hits from a .357” 12:48:44 PM 3/27/03 “They are Nugget. Fairly high bittering, but a great aroma. I've got an Irish Red Ale recipie that it should be perfect for.” 12:51:29 PM 3/27/03 “I was always partial to Hallertauer myself. So they are sort of like Northern Brewer?” 12:57:33 PM 3/27/03 “Catshiker, that's called a "kickin' ready rooster". You know it's ready for the pot when you have to kick it off you, everytime you step foot outside. At least that's what Birch's farm raised aunt tells us. Another good solution to nasty bug problems is ladybugs and preying mantis'. You can order them in most seed catalogues. I guess it all depends on what type of pest you have. An organic weed killer is corn gluten, or a nice afternoon spent on your knees in the grass and garden with a weeding fork and dirty fingernails. =)” 11:13:00 PM 3/27/03 “Corn gluten will most excuses for grass around here. I get the "Gardens Alive!" catalogs, so I'm somewhat hip on the organic products out there.” 11:17:30 PM 3/27/03 “That's a great catalogue, but oh my gosh, so expensive. I guess it's worth it though.” 11:20:56 PM 3/27/03 “Helps to have that $20 off coupon they send me! I get them online too, so I end up saving a lot of money.” 11:22:17 PM 3/27/03 “cool. Have you ever gotten the "seeds of change" catalogue? Its one of my favorites to browse.” 11:24:22 PM 3/27/03 “Nope, I haven't been sold on to their mailing list yet.” 11:26:02 PM 3/27/03 11:27:13 PM 3/27/03 12:57:10 AM 3/28/03 “I just but down a 29-8-5 on the lawn soon green will be comming! 8)” 6:23:19 PM 3/28/03 “Liquified fish emulsion, liquified seaweed kelp, Medina, and Blackstrap molasses (cuts down on the fish smell amongst other things). Foliar feeding using a pump sprayer bi-weekly during growing season. The results are amazing. If you use ANY fertilzer, organic or not, do not over apply. Over application of nitrogen hardends the soil and contributes to buildups of salts in the soil. Do not apply before forecasted heavy rains since this will result in leaching(might as well throw the money spent on fertilizer in the street gutter. The worst type of fertilizer is one with a very high nitrogen ratio. All it does is makes the grass grow fast and does nothing for the root system. The root system is critical, especially in drought-prone areas. The deeper the root system(deep infrequent watering helps) the more drought resistant the grass will become. It is more critical to build the soil health than anything else to ensure a healthy lawn.” 11:13:14 AM 3/29/03 “I gave up on my lawn due to mole infestation. Anyone ever had to fight these little buggers?” 11:20:40 AM 3/29/03 “Buggers is the right word. I seem to recall a three year battle between my dad and moles. I believe he ended up using a guiletine trap. Basically he killed them all.” 1:52:51 PM 3/29/03 “Carl Spackler Rides Again! <GRIN>” 2:15:54 PM 3/29/03 Sassafras “Maybe he should have used some crack nicotine?” 2:48:31 PM 3/29/03 “Moles usually mean you have grubs=their fav. snack.Treat for grubs. Very good advise Cairn. I love spring!” 8:45:03 PM 3/29/03 “Carl Spackler Rides Again! Tilt Uhhh, hello, Mr Gopher, It's just me , Mr Squirrel, no I'm not made of plastic explosive, It's just this new suit I'm wearing. I'm just stoping by for a visit. Mr Rabbit may be at the back door too.......” 10:18:49 AM 3/30/03 “Who's Carl SPackler?” 10:50:16 AM 3/30/03 “Never mind. He was a character from Caddyshack.” 11:00:23 AM 3/30/03 “ ![]() Exploding lawn mower destroys Johns Creek homeStarting your lawn mower can be trouble enough. But Danny Fendley, of Johns Creek, started more than just his mower Tuesday afternoon when he tugged at the pull cord. The mower "exploded," starting a fire that soon consumed Fendley's home. "It's a goner," said Fulton County Fire Lt. Gregory Chambers, at the scene of the blaze. "There's not even one brick standing." Fendley said he was trying to start a lawn mower in the garage of his two-story brick home in the Breckenridge subdivision near Old Alabama Highway. He removed the mower's spark plug, to check it, when the mower wouldn't start right away. After replacing the plug, he stood over the mower, ready to try again. One final yank at the starter cord and . . . "Poof! Flames just flared up at me," he said. Fendley said he ran inside to grab something to put the flames out and tell his wife, Sabrina. But when he returned, the fire had spread too far to stop it. As Fendley struggled with the blaze, he said his wife tried to toss a can of gasoline out a window. She missed. "Gas spilled everywhere," he said. Within 60 seconds, the conflagration had engulfed the house. At one point Fendley discovered his clothes were on fire, but his wife put out the flames with an extinguisher. Before they fled, the couple successfully rescued their cats. No one was seriously hurt. http://www.ajc.com/living/content/metro/northfulton/stories/2007/08/14/fire_0815_web.html last edited: 8/16/07 4:51:21 AM” 4:50:39 AM 8/16/07 “Hopefully they will not reproduce.” 4:56:10 AM 8/16/07
