I don't have to mow my lawn, I pay assosciation dues, but I do have to tend to my garden. My girlfriend and I cleaned out the planter and behind the house. Both spots are already growing plants that were planted last year. I still have the side and front to clean out.

I started some seeds inside a week ago for a nice small garden. Bell peppers, tomatos (patio and cherry), watermelons, cantelopes, radishes, and green beans. I can't wait until they're big enough to plant outside.

I've been unable to garden for the past year (pregnancy, new baby, and gardening in Fl. don't mix too well.) I'm trying to get rid of all the bugs that have moved in in the meantime. My big pots have carpenter ant nests, the 5-gal. pots all have small ants or earwigs the size of Kansas.

USE ORGANIC!
I hate chemical fertilizers. Stupid green lawns are not worth our water quality.

If you ever visited a water plant at any city, you'd see a lot more chemicals go into the water there than your average homeowner uses...pretty scary really. That notwithstanding, if organic fertilizers (i.e. poop) work as well, yeah, go ahead and use them. Every little bit helps.
I'm not flaming you Sass, your post just made me think about the time I was in a city water plant. Don't ask me what I was doing there. In small towns you never know where the good looking women might be hanging out. This time it happened to be at a water plant. Oh well, I digress.

Stickmanwalking, I'm speaking of the ground water table.

I think the chemicals at the city water plant are necessary for making it potable aren't they, (aside from the flouride)? There's a definate difference between necessary and lawn vanity.

And I don't spread manure, I spred alfalfa pellets. Very high in Nitrogen, naturally.

Organic or Nonorganic...

Too many nutrients leaching/running off into streams, creeks, ponds, lakes can cause an imbalance in nutrient levels causing blooms.

Take care with the amount and type of products you use. Especially if you have a well or small children.

Remember eventually its going to come back to you in one form or another.

I really hate mowing lawns. I mow about an acre & a half with a garden tractor. I have a hundred tree's to mow around. Luckily most of the property is covered in mountain laurel. I dug up my whole back yard last year with a rented backhoe, so now I have to plant grass. My grandson loves the mud & I have a gazillion rocks to remove.

I've seen some million dollar homes that have gone with a more natural look and have planted "large" trees for cover and then made the area surrounding the trees look like a well groomed forest floor....

Its not totally natural but I still think its more environmently friendly.

That sounds good Adventurist. I didn't mow my lawn the past two years, but think I might this year. Need to get a lawn tractor/rider if so. I wish I had planted a ton of trees the almost 20 years ago I moved to my property.

And I am LMAO about Crazy Mike and his lawn. LOL! Somehow it just seems sooooooooooo wrong, nature boy being anal about his lawn and wanting it to be a showpiece.

IT'S AKIN TO CAR CAMPING, CMB! eeeeeeeeeeeek!~~~

No lawn for me here in NH. My yard is still covered with a foot and a half of snow. When it all melts, I'll be spreading more bark mulch over the existing bark mulch. I may have to use a weed whacker a few times a year going over the vegetation that covers the leach field. I am looking forward to not mowing and taking care of my lawn for the first time in years.

You all are crazy. I love yardwork. I took advantage of our last nice weekend for the first mowing of the year. Also cleaned out flower beds, put down new mulch and transplanted a few flowers and shrubs. This will be our first summer in our new home and we're looking forward to spending a lot of it in our lawn and gardens. Putting in a small vegetable garden this year and then expand to larger garden next year.

I'm in a condo too, so I pay someone to keep the grass green. They do a nice job of perfectly manicuring it.

You're going to see a LOT of info in the next year or so about using too much fertilizer on your lawn, which will be part of the new stormwater regulations the Feds have put out. All those extra nutrients wash off your lawn, into the storm drains, and into the rivers and lakes. That's more of a concern than getting into the groundwater. Be wise with your use.

I am happy to say that my yard is chemical free.

But does anyone have good organic suggestions for bugs. We have a plethora of insects in Indiana. If I do nothing they will litterally eat every leaf off of some plants.

I also have fruit trees, plum and apple that need to be protected from insects as well.

That whole chemical lawn industry is not needed.

I had a pain-in-the-ass old lady for a neighbor who manicured her yard.....puke!!!
Her grass looked like a Johnny U flattop!

She would give me unwanted advice about what to feed the rododendron, etc.

I said to her, "There are those of us who manicure the lawn and those of us who simply cut the grass.
I just cut the grass, thank you!"

I expect that some day there will be laser beam lawn mowers for all those tight-ass yard freaks.

At least they won't drone on like gas-engined mowers.

Just get one of those little robot mowers for your yard. All you do is drop a wire around the perimeter, plug in its charging base, and leave it alone.

LOL @ lizs!!

I still have snow as well, and after that it'll be too wet for much yard work for a while. I'm gonna mow my lawn this year, but only because I'm putting a for sale sign on my house.

I used to do all that stuff - mow, plant trees, flowers, had a big garden that I canned and pickled from but I had to stay home to do all that! That was fine when my son was growing up, but not any more. I kinda miss playing in the dirt though, lol. :)

I go organic as much as possible. I even make my own bug killer for the garden. TObacco juice works wonders. I go light on the fertilizers for my plants, and the only grass I have is on the right of way by the road. Everything else is trees, shrubs, and lilies.

Tobacco juice?

I found an ancient bottle of NICOTINE liquid in the garage.
It had the "skull & crossbones" on it.
The instructions said to mix just a bit with water and spray on roses, etc.
If it doesn't kill the beetles they'll be off to the 7-11 for a pack of smokes and leave the roses alone.

Nicotine sulfate used to be a common ingredient in bug killers. The tobacco plant fights bugs with it. Only a few pests have developed enough resistance to nicotine to be able to eat tobacco leaves.

You can make your own by soaking a can of Copenhagen snuff in some water. It's very, very powerful stuff though, and I wouldn't do it if you have small kids in the house.

Company wide, we just added about 7000 new sites for lawncare. This is the busiest time of year for us in terms of new startups. I will be glad when May gets here and it slows down. Fortunately for me though, I won't have to do any yardwork this summer!

Nicotine is VERY TOXIC!!!!

A few drops in a cup of coffee will KILL!!!

It was in a book about an assassination.
The victim was a smoker anyway and the nicotine in the coffee stopped his heart.
The death was not suspicious.
