Whoo Hoo....new gear!

“Yeah, I did lay in the Hubba which ultimately helped me decide on buying it. It is narrow, but I had plenty of clearance for my shoulders and arms. I have an SD Ultralight year....it's probably the tiniest tent I've ever slept in. I bought this one for 1. size 2. headroom 3. weight I just wanted a small freestanding lightweight one person tent with some headroom--no headroom in the ULyear. I think I'll like this one a lot.”

Your scared of bears? Spend the money on a bear canister and sleep X/C instead. I carry pepper spray for the 2 legged variety of beast and for dogs.....I quess I am odd, I have almost no fear of bears.
So where are you heading for hiking this year? :-)”

For two people hiking as a couple, I would use white gas.”

“I'm not afraid of black bears, growing up in WV we have plenty of them and I've even hunted them. However, griz's on the other hand, I have no real experience with them. And until I saw one at close range in the backcountry I wasn't afraid of them until I saw how big it was when it was standing on its hind legs--WOW! I guess I respect them more than I fear them, otherwise I wouldn't be headed back into their territory! I'm just taking the counter assault with me this time to make me feel a lil safer until I have more experience in griz territory--it's only my 2nd trip into their domain.

And we're headed back to Yellowstone. I love that place. Still gonna try to make it to the PNW this year, possibly this fall.”

“Well let me know if you get out here....it is so dry this year that we are already hiking in subalpine in May....it may be a very dry year in the fall :-(”

“Hey, I followed everyone's advise and finally brought my melted trail gaiters back to REI -- and they returned them!!! :-) The clerk asked me what was wrong with them, and I told him that "they didn't hold up well to heat"... LOL (2 melted holes on the back...! So, he credited $15 back to me! :-) (they were on sale when I got them in September!)

I also went and got the National Geographic Topo maps for Michigan (25% off sale), the Garmin Topo road maps for our GPS (20% off Member's "coupon"), some Tech wash and repellent for our hiking boots and rainwear, and a holder for our GPS Unit....

All-in-all, with the sale and my dividend, we made out like bandits!! We got everything for about 40% off of the original price... :-) (Woo hoo!!)

REI is incredible-- they told us that if the Garmin software didn't work on our computer that we could even return it! (I was quite shocked--most places won't allow you to return software!) At least we know that we won't get stuck with it if it doesn't work!”

Wife got a pair of Asolo boots, and a Thermarest Prolite Pad, Girl #1 got the Morning Star 55 pack, Girl #2 got clothing, Girl #3 a new sleeping bag.

“Got my REI Sub Kilo 0° bag (or whatever the hell it's called) yesterday. I had ordered it online and had it delivered to the store. Tried it out on the living room floor - seems pretty comfy. It comes with a compression-type stuff sack. Kinda looks like a rugby ball when you strap it down.”

I got a pair of Lowa renegade gtx II's back around christmas I think. I didn't wear them very often. I got the left boot stretched a little bit width wise back in early March for my Smokies trip, and on day 3 the leather panel along the outside of the left boot split wide open right in the middle, not along a seam. So back to the gear store they went, with assurances they'd let me know asap what awas going on. Nothing for two months. THen I went back this weekend with HPM (he also had gear return problems there) and they said "Oh, we just recieved notification that they ot the boots back to the factory." Freaking lovely. How long will I not have boots? Then monday morning I get a call from the gear store again. "there was some confusion about your returns, becaus they were men's boots(wider). They've been here buried in the storeroom for over a month." ~sigh~ At least I have boots again, and there's nothing like having to break in hiking boots in hot weather. Bleah.”
