I couldn't help it..the new lexon bottle jumped into the cart...it was 2 bucks, and purpple...not sure about the lid though- seems to be made out of some rubber like plastic...I had to buy one just to test its leak proofness ;)

FlashTrax can safely store high-resolution images transferred from any flash memory card onto the built-in 40GB USB2.0 hard drive and displays them on a 3.5" LCD that outperforms tiny on-camera screens. By using the sleek control pad, the user can change the image, zoom in, zoom out and scroll, or choose a slide show function -- all without the need of a PC.

Finally got a digital camera - Canon SD400, 5 megapixel. Something like 4.5 ounces. Oooooo, baby. Can't wait to take it on our beach camping trip next week. Really can't wait to take it on the next bping trip.

And to keep the kiddies occupied in the car for the 3+ hour drive down (5 if we hit traffic), I got a dual-screen in-car DVD system. We'll use it too in camp, but its oh-so-nice to keep the whining down during a long drive. Used to just take a 13-inch TV and VCR, but that was a major pain. In my back, neck...

You'd think I would have a digital camera by now, or 3, but I sat on the fence until I found the perfect deal. Also wanted to wait until I could get at least 4 mp in a small package.

Change my name to lowtechntrek. :-)

Mom still has firm control over the remote, so no fights over movies yet. Maybe now that they can play their DVD's the fights will begin.

Question:
Is there a digital Camera on the market that does not need it's own software package loaded on your computer to download photos?

Reason: If I'm packing in Virginia and want to post pictures from say, an Internet cafe, Can I simply plug in the camera and click save...kinda like a external drive?

Yes, I'm totally ignorant of the camers and the software thing...I just know that the one I've borrowed has to use software loaded on the computer to download photos...that sux.

Yes, there is a name for that, and I can't think of it off-hand. Something like "USB host". Lets you eliminate the computer like you want to do.

Edit: Ok, I just did some quick reading on this and I was right. You need to make sure that the storage device you are using can be a USB host. I'm guessing all must be able to do that. Most devices, like PDAs and cameras, are "dumb". Some PDA's, all computers, and I'm guessing those storage devices can be hosts. Then you are good to go.

I just re-read what you posted. If you are talking about uploading from an Internet cafe, make sure your camera has a USB port. When you plug the camera into the computer it should detect the camera as a USB drive, and then you can grab the pics.

Picked up a Big Agnes Gilpin in the REI Outlet - $155. Also picked up a Sierra Designs Kalahari in the Outlet, on the 'today's hot deal' special, for the wifey - $85.

Any internet cafe worth the name should have card readers for the media your camera uses.

Jeez, I hope someone learns how to make and
post a link soon. I can't read the stuff that
goes off the page into the next room (and I'm
not going to scroll, scroll, scroll for every line).

Good luck with your new camera.

Rolls of FLYPAPER TAPE

I tried it out on my last hike and it worked
great. It will be standard equipment on future
trips whenever there is a chance
of encountering flys and other bugs.

nowslimmer - what are you talking about? The link I posted wraps nicely onto 3 lines, at least it does on my browswer (IE6).

techntrek - Thanks, that's interesting. My IE is so bugged I don't use it unless forced by my mail server at times. I'm using Netscape 7.2 and viewing text at 100%. It does not wrap the links. I had to drop View to 50% to reduce the length adequately, but at that point the link is too small to read. Maybe I need a larger screen.

Once the page is extended because of a long link, text without a CR insert will fill the extended length before wrapping until the text ends. Thus I have to scroll or put the offending poster on temporary ignore, which will eliminate the problem with the length.

A lot depends upon what Matt sends out. He seems to have made a recent change to limit the text overflow on the page. For this string I can read all the text after I scroll the starting edge of the text blocks to the left edge of the screen. Unimportant, the link does extend into or under the Black Trail Talk box on the right.

I just got a Primus Micron canister stove. First time I've ever had anything but an alcohol stove but I like it. Haven't had it in the field yet but think I'll like it.

Woo Hoo!
I got a Western Mountaineering Megalite.
Pretty nice bag, 30 deg., 1 lb 8 oz and cut quite roomy. I figure I can use it with my fleece liner in colder weather and still have lots of wiggle room.

a new Jacks R Better 8 by 8 siltarp for my hammock - trying to save a little weight and get better performance than my 10 by 10 siltarp - new tarp has the seam on the diagonal

Still enough room under there at 8x8? Must force a pretty low pitch?

well I see how it goes - I think it will be OK since it is the diagonal distance that will be the length of the hammock - around 11 feet - the ridgeline for my Explorer Delux is 9 feet so it looks good on paper

Another purchase (eBay this time)... inspired by sarbar's site I got a dehydrator. American Harvest Snackmaster 2200. Have it drying some celery, onions and cannelini beans (the only things in the house I could find to dry).

My old minivan died on the way home from our car camping trip to the beach. Threw a rod. That piece of crap left us stranded several times.

Now we have a 2003 Totota Sienna. Great for large groups to the trailhead, or hauling several kayaks. And of course hauling the kids and camper on car camping trips. Rides really nice, much more powerful. Should have gotten rid of the old minivan years ago.

it allows me to cut my grass faster so I can get out and do whatever! It's cut my mowing time in HALF!

I bought a small tripod for my camera yesterday. Today I ordered a insulmat therm-max and a flip spatula. Tomorrow I pickup a new pack. Can't wait to use this stuff on my trip in August and then again at Footballapalooza.

Thx. I borrowed Houndogs mini tripod on the Sipsey (Quillen) 04 trip and it worked great. The last few trips I've lugged my big tripod around and it sucks. My next trip is all on water and I don't want to take the big one. Incidently, we're headed back to 47 which was part of the trip I met you on.

Bought one for Sherbear for her birthday since her crappy wal-mart grease pot was starting to come apart. After playing with it awhile decided my pot/pan combo was one of the biggest things in my pack so I went back and got me one too!
