I decided that I deserved a break today.

It is soft. With the beanie and gaiter both on they overlap quite a bit. I can adjust the gaiter all the way to over my nose and the beanie down low over the ears. I got this mainly for sleeping.

I don't still have the tags, but I'm pretty sure it said Merino. The wool in the socks I got (Wigwam) was much softer though.

They are being misleading.

After they get through with their manufactoring processing, that 'Merino' wool has long been changed in to a different fiber than 'real' merino.

Smartwool is not Merino.

I pretty much just use synthetic anklets that I bought at Wal-Mart for hiking now. I would have to be north or in the Smokies during winter to do something different. The anklets work for a winter trip here. I do sometimes sleep in the thicker stuff though. I'm pretty sure I was able to wear the anklets on that trip you and I took last year with DDX and Reece.

PS. I've been pondering a TT Pinhoti trip. I took the kids up there 2 different times about a month ago and was really impressed. I was north of I20.

Once in the CONDO tent and spent a total of 6 hours there...the second time we were on a kayak trip and she slept in a Hammock...but she drew the line at going outdoors (unless there is a cabin involved).

went to rei to get the kids crocs for christmas and while in the climbing section found a pair of mad rock climbing shoes for... $15! score! they were "marked down" from 80 bucks. they were not in a box but were new, at least in appearance. i am betting they were a return. i am not sure i would want to purchase ANY climbing gear that had been returned but i think shoes could be an exception. anyway, i went climbing for about 4 hours today with them and they are quite acceptable. they are full lace-up shoes (no velcro) and while they are a tight fit are quite comfortable... for climbing shoes. what are the odds that i would find a pair that FITS that is marked down like that... anyway, i am thrilled. :)

WK..that stove is KILLER. My Son wanted something that you could hook up and go with. We put the stove on a tank of fuel...and WOW it is great. IMHO the coffee press is nice, but I am going to stick with my Bodum coffee filter.

I just picked up a MH Offwidth softshell. Seems like a decent jacket, haven't had a chance to get it on the trail yet. I wore it out in a light drizzle the other night to see what it was like and it shed water nicely. It has a fleece lining and seems really warm for backpacking and other activities that involve any moving, so I'll probably park it in the closet during late spring to late fall. I'm still wanting to pick up another one, maybe the Alchemy or something by Arcteryx.

I just picked up a pair of the new Marmot PreCip full zip pants. I'm a little guarded with the brand, because my PreCip Anorak started flaking the laminate around the taped seams after only 3 years of very light (trail) use.

Very disappointing.

They are a lot heavier than my Sierra Designs pants (that ripped out the ass after just a year), but I hope the trade off is feeling comfortable knowing that I'm not wearing a Frogg Toggs wanna be.

Are they the duck ones Q? I picked up one of the sets for like $16. Haven't used them enough yet.

BTW- Am I the only loser who has gotten in the shower with a new shell on?

"Are they the duck ones Q? I picked up one of the sets for like $16. Haven't used them enough yet."

I don't understand your question. Perhaps my statement was unclear. I don't own a set of Frogg's; only stating that the Sierra pants stood up about as good as a set of Frogg pants, which are not that "sturdy".

"BTW- Am I the only loser who has gotten in the shower with a new shell on?"

Nope. It only make sense to have them "fail" in the shower; rather that when you are getting you ass handed to you.

At least that's what I tell the wife after I get done gear testing the rain gear in the shower.

She seems to understand. lol!

i'm never gonna hang another foodbag again...i finally got an ursack!
oh, and a nice little MEC waterproof/breathable jacket too. it's made of something called "Toray ENTRANT-DT". i'm going to test it in the shower now.

Remember the Ursack is not rodent proof... it's a bear bag. Critters with sharp teeth can chew through it per the web site... but that's not the same thing as bear-bagging, I realize. I just wanted to point this out. I have never actually seen one a rodent got into.

trixie tested its puncture and rip resistence last night; the kids used it as a decoy while they wrestled with her.

doggie teeth can go through the loose weave but the little holes are easily smoothed out and she wasn't able rip it.
i thought about testing it with the rats but i chickened out - i'm always amazed at what they are able to chew thru.

i know i'll have to tie the bag up on a tree but at least i won't have to do the throw-the-rope trick on most of my trips :)
