I'm gonna have new gear VERY SOON! Birch, the great man that he is, is in the process of making me my "Ho-Mobile". Thank you, Birch. :)

Red Ledge is pretty good. I've had the pants for years and they've served me well - not great for breathability, but full-length leg zips solve that issue. I got Dare a pair 2 years ago also.

Lt - I've never heard of the Z pack. Sheesh, i must be slipping on my gearheadism.
Let's hear a review soon!

coming out of Mt Rogers...
I made the obligatory stop at Mt Rogers Outfitters...left away with the new MSR ultra burner stove for white gas. extremely light weight and QUIET!!!! easier to handle than my whisperlight and folds up REALLY small. I also got Khatru an AT bandanna...navy blue (should look good with his eyes).

It just arrived. The upgrading spree is finally over! I've cleaned out all the unecessary unused gear in my gear room by selling some of the high end stuff, and giving other things away. Also, through the purchase of some amazing deals at a local gear store sale, and my subsequent sales of those items on ebay, combined with the sale of some never used gear, I was able to build a gear cash stash. Final upgrade list:
Bibler Tripod Bivy (used, ebay)
Dana Designs Glacier (big sale, killerdeals.com)
BD Sabretooth crampons with anti-bots (lightly used, ebay)
Trango 60mm Ice Axe (new, ebay)
Eagle Creek 7,500 ci duffel (big sale, Summithut.com)
MH King Tut SL Long (Big Sale MOOSEJAW.com
MSR Whisperlight Intl. (used, ebay)
Brunton Sherpa (new, big gear sale)
BD T-Grip Shovel (new, big sale, STP.com)
Z-Rest (New, big sale, killerdeals.com)
DD Beavertail Shovit (new, big sale, travelcountry.com)

After using the gear cash stash, I had to spend $239 out of pocket. Damn, that was fun!

Hey Stikmon what is the ultraburner stove?

3lbs 8oz for a pack that will only carry up to 30lbs, that seems heavy. I have a Golite Race that is made to carry up to 30lbs and it wieghs 1lb 8oz.

Here are a few.

You probably want one made out of Coolmax or silk.

why do they call them "Balaclava"?
strange name for something that covers the face.

anyway, mine is from patagonia. That's all they had. I really don't care though. All I know is that I will be warm during my next winter hike.

I do need new boots. Unless I can somehow waterproof my not so waterproof goretex boots...

Hey Buddha, I got a whisperlite int'l for Christmas a few years back and it's never failed me, even when the temps down around 5 and the wind is blowing pretty good.

tents
Hey does anyone know if there is such a thing as a lightweight 3 man, 3 season tent?

lightweight = less than 7 pounds

Needs to be fairly stormproof too.

I'm trying to decide whether to go with a 2 man or a 3 man and I'm thinking I'll be limited to 2 man due to an unwillingness to by a 8 pound tent.

Sierra Designs Clip Flashlight 3

Only 5lb 9oz. as is. A little more if you add enough stakes to stake out the fly and a groundsheet, but still likely under 8lb.

Looks like the deal. approx 5.5 lbs, 43 sq ft of floor, 7 sq ft vestibule, and room to sit up. The door has a circular zipper? Thats pretty wild.

Anybody actually used one?

It looks like a great tent.

Roam Around Mike... do you always backpack with your kids??
If not...I bought me a $20 ebay tent. All 3 of us (me and my 2 kids) fit into this tent. Ways only 3lb and some oz.

oh darn...I even found a 3 person tent just under 4 lbs:

Wonder if they are storm proof...

Not always.

I do need something though - the tent I had this weekend lets rain blow up under the fly.

I usually take my solo tent, but with three of us I wanted to either get a two or a three.

I was looking on ebay too. Too many danged options to choose from.

Roamin' Mike

Roam around, We got a Kelty Vortex 3 this summer for hiking with the kid. It's 7 pounds and a few ounces and when we got it someone, can not remember exactly who, told us they had a tornado touch down close by while they were in it, and it withstood the storm. There ya go, storm proof. It's roomy as heck too, two doors and loads of nifty features for 7 pounds. Only ran $179 at STP. They still have it I believe.

Ordered another Kelty Flight, for snow camping or rain. My other one has a few small holes in the bottom.

Ordered another Stephenson's Warmlite 2R. The zippers are coming apart, so when I get the new one, I'll send the old one in for repair and use it as a backup. Used the warmlite this season without using the outer zippers (kept getting stuck) and it held up in the rain and wind.

Also got
- Mountain Hardware beanie. Warmest hat I've ever had.
- off white patagonia expedition top.
- Princeton Tec Aurora Flashlight

Get the club Ped, best $50 you'll spend. Seems to have stopped the joyriders trying to steal mine (fingers crossed) ... well ok, a stolen car crashed into it after that, but you gotto figure that was accidental.

I was supposed to be breaking it in last weekend, but my arbitration case lasted 8 friggin' hours. I did pack it with all my winter gear and took a 1/2 stroll thru the metropark Sat. morn. There were some very nice stares... lol!

I couldn't believe how well it handled the load (45 lbs). It felt like I had 10 lbs. on my back. The suspension system is awsome, with the majority of the weight transfered to the waist and legs. There is plenty of room in the pack (5,600 ci), and it's by far the best pack I've ever owned.
