Pennsy's got a jet boil now. I think the man needs an intervention.

and you homemade gear tinkerers...richb and StoveStomper...what do I need to know to sew fleece by machine? nothing? :)
(before you laugh, I am the child of an amazing seamstress, yet I once got fired from a mill because they said, "you'll never be able to sew")
I finally dragged my 20+ year old sewing machine up from the cellar.
I guess I need to take it in for a D&C - it works, but not really.

I cut out fleece liners for the grandkids sleeping bags yesterday (it's chilly here camping out in April) but for now I'll have to hand stitch the bottoms.

twiggy - I've only sewn about a foot of fleece. I did it just like two regular pieces of fabric.
Worked fine.
After seeing dayhiker's ducky mittens, I'm going to try to make some. Maybe a hat too.

I saw those...my grandkids go thru so many mittens, it would be handy to just whip some up. I can knit, but that takes forever...

are you gonna get ducky material too? :)

My only experience in sewing fleece really isn't much. I took in the inseam of a pair of fleece pants that the fit was a tad big. It didn't seem much different than other fabrics for the little bit that I sewed. I just used Gutterman polyester thread and a Singer ball point needle for non-woven fabrics. If you haven't used the machine in a long time and intend to start using it clean and oil it. I brought mine, a 1939 Singer 201 to a shop and they did the work because it needed some electrical work that I didn't want to fool around with. It works great now, but just doesn't have the fancy stitches a modern machine does. For fleece, I would think that you'd only need to adjust the foot tension if it's not right for the thicker fabric, use good thread, a brand new needle and go for it.

REI called me today to let me know that my new Gregory "Z" pack is in! Now I just have to find time to get up there and try it on with weight in it....

Does Pennsy even have titanium glasses??"
yam

Silly Yammy. Of course he does.

Oh yeah, I didn't report in that I picked up one of those cool new Jet Boils. It's a nice little set-up if you just want to boil water. Cooking in it is a bit of a pain though.

I guess I shouldn't mention that I just received a custom Bearikade, a few ounces lighter and 2" shorter. Ideal for a solo.

Thank You Twigeater!
I got two big pieces of tyvek in the mail today! 3 x 7+ feet(4.4 oz.) and 9 x 15+ feet(1# 4.4 oz.)! Oh man, I can make a honking big tarp or several smaller projects!
See also send me some Maine hiking info!

twigeater - I went to Wal-Mart this afternoon to look at fleece. They didn't have a ducky fleece, but did have spongebob squarepants fleece for $4 a running yard, 60" wide. I passed. ha ha.

More new gear! Twigeater sent me a Bug Baffler bug suit. The top zips across the neckline and the entire suit is well made. Looks like it will work well to keep nasty bugs from biting me. Thanks Twigeater.

I think I'm gonna order a Primus Yellowstone to test out. I like that it has an automatic starter and better pot/stove stability than the pocket rocket.

Dub - I am really happy with my Yellowstone - have had it for years. Griz originally told me about it here. For 3-season use, it kicks butt...plus, I really like the canister stoves due to:

+lights just like your gas burner at home
+no priming
+simmer ability

and it's pretty afforable too...now, got git you some!

I need to get out on the trail even if it's just to keep me out of the store.

New Balance trail runners
Compass/bell for my bike
Bike shorts
Summer's supply of gas canisters
Bike tools (tire levers, 3 in 1)
Sweet new Silva compass with UTM plotter

OH! Almost forgot....

I also got a new pair of NB trail runners, the 475 to be exact.

Found a sweet wicking hoody on the clearance rack at Target, just $9.99. It's just the right weight for spring and a lovely robin's egg blue. ;)

Sass,
I got the same New Balance trail runners that I had last year. Loved 'em and can't believe they still stock the model!

I'll be in Lexington that weekend. :-(

I have the orienteering map from Yankee Springs where we'll be this weekend. Maybe we'll have some free time?

I tested my new poles out last weekend while dayhiking in SW Ohio. The terrain was fairly simple but I took the poles anyway, just to carry 'em for the day. They're really comfy grips and the poles weigh next to nothing. So far, I'm pleased.

Also, slept on my new Z-Rest last weekend, under my GuideLite (was car-camping so could afford the extra weight) and it was super comfy!

I know T-Bull will prolly kill me fer this, but I bought a set of REI Summit Trekking poles last night. They were 60.00, but I'm going to see if my sister can use them. I noticed what she was saying about them. These things are REAL flexible, shall we say. I'm afraid I'd torque on one real quick and it would be useless. I don't think SuperB could bend them, tho.

Man! Compaired to my tried and true, old school Kompperdells, the Summits can't hold up.

Definitely lighter than my brother's MH that I had been using:

Minimum Weight: 4 lbs
Packed Weight: 4 lbs 10 oz (this would be stakes, sack and all, I would guess).

LOL Stickman!

I picked the Yellowstone over the Pocket Rocket because of the Piezo lighter and the stability ratings. Hopefully it will be a good replacement for my Whisperlite Int'l for group cooking and gourmet cooking. I bought an extra fuel tank just to play around with it at home.

Also...do you have to use the Primus IsoButane or will the stove screw onto other brands like MSR?

I have one primus canister, and the rest are MSR because I like the smaller size you can get from MSR. Anything but those campingaz things, if I remember correctly. And none of those big coleman propane things from Walmart of course.

Came home today to an REI box on the doorstep Whoo Hoo.

REI Travel Down 45, I've never had a lightweight bag before... my sleeping bag has almost always filled the sleeping bag compartment in my pack, with this one, and my new pepsi can stove i can almost fit my entire packs contents into the sleeping bag compartment, which is good for an overnight, but i don't think i'd go that minimum on a long trip.

Katadyn Hiker filter, i'm excited for that compared to my msr miniworks.

Every Neverwinter I have ever weighed comes in more like 2lbs 4oz. I beleive somewhere someone at the Marmot Marketing department put the Arroyo's weight on the Neverwinter's literature and it's just stuck. Why else would someone pay close to $300 for a 30 degree Arroyo if the Neverwinter is the same temp rating and same weight?
