groovy
I use very little toothpaste bp-ing though. Too hard to rinse it with my typical amount. Uses up a lot of filtered water.

Hey, my Ursack is coming today! Darn those companies that ship with signature only. I went into work early so I could get home by 4 in the off chance my UPS guy will come later in the 2pm-5pm window to deliver it. I'd like to use it tomorrow at the Hoh.

i bought me the clever toothbrush a while ago. that one didn't work. then I got a free one at trail days, and it works just fine. yupp, you fill it with paste then you'll turn the top part until you see paste on the brush.

I Lost My Toothbrush In Ithaca

(sung to the tune of "Folsom Prison Blues")

I searched inside my duffle
I looked inside my pack
But I ain't seen my toothbrush
I guess I'll never get it back

I lost that thing in Ithaca
My breath's a dragon's pride

When I see people a-runnin'
I hang my head and cry.

I guess I musta dropped it
I wish that I knew where
I guess it could be maybe
It got et by some ol' bear

But now it just don't matter
My tooth done rotted out my head

When I smile and talk and yawn
People just run away scared

You listen to me hikers
When packin' up your gear
Keep your toothbrush with ya
Don't put it behind your ear

You'll lose it just like I did
And you'll know how I feel

The girls won't even talk to you
They'll just cough real hard and reel

I need lots of new gear. Well, boots at the very least. I have yet to find anything that's really comfortable and blister free.

treebait, my very first hiking boots were the ONLY boots that didn't not give me any blisters and were comfortable. That's it, no other pair matched them so far.

Spending $20 in REI is the epitome of restraint. Ruby, you are a self disciplined person.

I sent there the other night without needing anything and spent $98 and change. I wanted to keep it under $100, and I did just barelyw

Geo: No way did I spend $20. After returning my boots and then getting a new pair, I had $20 remaining credit. THEN I went shopping and spent an additional $300+. Except for the boots, none of it was even for me. It's not easy outfitting three people on a single mom's income. But I have my priorities. :)

Need some help buying a real boot
Looks like I'm back in the market for another pair of boots. I don't care what Backpacker says Asolo's FSN series is not a backpacking boot. Great for a weekend under light loads but I hurt everytime this boot is worn over 8 miles. Just not enought support or cushion in the sole. I also hate the fact that after about 120 miles on the trail the sole needs replaced. Does anyone own a pair of Aslos TPS HIGHLAND GVs. Also, interested in Montrails but have heard many blister stories.

Lack of cushion
is a problem for me also. I think that hiking boots are made for stability and therefore the cush gets sacrificed. So I've been trying to lighten my load so I can wear my Montrail trail runners.

Montrail boots. Several of my friends have them. Some love them and they are great. Others hate em and get bad blisters. I think it's a fit issue. Works well on some feet and not on others.

I've got leather Vasques that fit my foot beautifully. But they are super non-cushy. I had to put Spenco gel inserts in them and I still can only last 8 miles a day, tops.

But they fit so good! (whining.)

was sort of curious so I bought some memory foam insoles. I think I paid like $8 for them. Heard that memory foam is really cool stuff, so who knows they may do wonders.

Gemini - you posted about how all your boots give you blisters, what gives? You should be past the "tenderfoot" stage by now, with all the hiking you've been doing your feet should be toughened up (yes, I know you have very soft, delicate feet!)

Hmmm, are YOU wearing two pairs of socks? You said you had a closet full of boots and they all give you problems. Do you have a foot that is extra wide? Do you get the blisters in the same spots every time?

I know with heavy leather boots they can take forever to break in, softer boots shouldn't take that long to break in. Here's two suggestions for you; 1. pick ONE pair of boots that are on the top of your list (preferably boots you already own!) and wear them ALL THE TIME, not just when you are hiking. Beat them up until they submit! -If you wear them long enough they will at some point start to soften and match your foot contour 2. Try different combos of socks, maybe if you're wearing a thin liner sock and outer sock you could try two pairs of medium weight socks to add to the cushioning.

oh, and you'll need to see me for a foot massage!

i get the blisters either on my heel. I think it's because the dang boot don't fit correctly (my heel sliding up and down too much I guess).

If I buy a size smaller the boot feels too tight and my toes touch the front while going downhill.

or I get them on the bottom of my foot. Not very often though.

Biggest problem is the heel blisters. Yes, I do have a wide foot I think. My old asolos were the only boots that have never ever given me blisters.

so my conclusion: I have screwed up feet with a way to high arch too. (remember the doctor telling me that when I was a kid)

and yeah...I need a foot massage. ;)

If the shoe fits everywhere but the heel, you may want to try those sticky heel cushion things (don't know what they are called) to take up some room around you heel. Dr. Scholls makes some. Good luck.

Gemini
I know its blasphemy with some people, but I have been using COTTON liner socks with thick wool or Thorlo socks over.

I do not like the synthetic liners.
They feel like plastic against my feet.
With I sweat with the synthetic socks my feet slide and get sore spots.

I find that the thick combination of socks loosen up a bit as they compress even if they feel a bit too tight at first.

There is no worry of freezing in warm weather with the cotton liners even when they get wet from sweat....so why worry?

I have been doing it this way since 1973....before you were born, dear.
