Great deals Thrifty! Which half of the half off bag did ya get?

“My idea of cold hiking/camping would be below 35 degrees. 40 - 60 is chilly and 60 -78 is nice 80 and above (depending on humidity) is getting hot”

I've done quite a few trips that have had all of those temps on the same day.

Nigal...I have used a canister stove in 20F temps....I put the canister in my bag at night then I have a "koozie" I made out of the aluminized insulation that I put it in. Usually it will work well in the morning. And if it is really cold I hike with it in my jacket. I pretty much have sworn by the MSR SUPERFLY. fits either type of canister and works GREAT.

WINDFALL FOR JIMMY SAN
I was in training this week. Part of the training was an exercise where we did some role playing and I had to make a presentation with a few of my co-workers. We had one hour to prepare and then present the project. Net of all this was that my presentation was selected as best and I won a 4GB iPod Nano! I was really pumped because on my recent trip to the Grand Canyon I spent a lot of time in my bivy sack and wished I had my huge iPod (40GB) with me... but I had given it to my wife. I wanted to buy an iPod Nano but opted to purchase a camera for the trip instead. After the trip I was convinced I would buy the Nano anyway and then three days later I win one in this contest. I am seriosuly jazzed!

The weather to too nasty to do anything outside yesterday, so I made the trip to the north side of Dallas I'd been putting off to see if REI really guarantees their backpacks for life. When I took my 4 yr old backpack with the hip belt that came apart (from carrying too much food - Bison knows) the girl at the register said, "I'm sorry, but all I can do is give you is $80 of credit." Whoo hooo!

Another store in town was trying to sell me a Gregory Baltoro and an Osprey Aether 70, but these paled compared to the REI Mars. The Baltoro is really nice, I don't understand what all the fuss over the Aether 70 is about, the Mars has some great features - notably that the whole back panel zips off and it compresses really well without too many compression straps.

I filled out a membership card and got the Mars for half price. I need to hit the trail!

Well, I still didn't get the horse thief my heart desires.

Had to buy adapters for the kayak racks and got a great deal on a sweet pair of bike shorts, regularly $120, 40% off. My days in the saddle will be much happier now. =)

I ordered a MSR Hubba tent yesterday. Why? Because it was on the cheap and it looked cool. I need a new tent like I need a hole in the head... it would seem especially odd to those that know my love of my bivy...

Actually all my solo tents are not freestanding, so there is someting here that appeals to me. I saw Captain Hook's Hubba on a trip this last year and it seemed to work well.

Got my new sleeping bag on friday and there was no zipper. The north face website and REI both have down there was a 2/3 length zipper. So its on its way back to REI for a refund. I think it was gods way of telling me I do not need anymore new gear right now and be happy with what you have.

MSR Hubba
I ordered it from:

http://www.riverroadandtrail.com

I got free shipping. The tent cost $173 which is pretty good. Of course someone will now post that they could have gotten it for $170 or something... :)

I just checked their site and now it is selling for $230. Not sure how I got it for $60 off but I am not going to complain. Perhaps I got a closeout model or something. I set it up this afternoon and it all looks good to me.

It's heavy, 3 lbs or something like that... more with a footprint if I had bought it. It is very roomy inside. For a guy that is into bivy bags it's a virtual mansion!

Ordered new boots... Vasque Sundowner Summit GTX. Tried on a pair and loved them, so I hope they work out! Used my REI 20% off coupon. I was hard pressed with what to get with my coupon. I am satisfied but not thrilled with my current boots. Hopefully I can break these new boots in this year and eventually phase out my old ones.

Kelty Illusion packs for the Mrs. and I, Have done about 5 miles with 35 lbs in it and they are pretty comfy. Relatively cheap and under 3.5 lbs. Plus, I don't have to baby them as the construction seems pretty solid.

Got the mini Katadyn water filter. Gotta love the ceramic element. I'm never gonna have a clogged paper filter ever again (well, guess I should never say never).

Just ordered the TarpTent Cloudburst. I am pretty stoked about that. Between these items, I just dropped my 3 season set up by about 7 lbs!

Man, I am raring for some early spring backpacking. Whoo hoo!

I ordered my first non-down sleeping bag. I have two Marmot bags because I have been very, very happy with the brand. So I stuck with them after looking over their synthetic bags. I ordered the Pounder Plus +25 bag which is Primaloft filled and has a waterproof/breathable shell. It weighs in at 2 lbs 2 oz which is a lot heavier than my 30 degree Marmot Hydrogen which weighs 1 lb 5 oz.

I needed another bag in the 30 degree range for my gear stash. I maintain enough gear to outfit my entire family of 5 with solid, comfortable gear when we go out. I also loan gear to the boys in my Scout troop that don't have stuff up to spec for conditions. The added bonus for me is a lot of flexibility when packing for a trip. Sort of a mini-REI in my closet.

Malden Mills, are makers of the cuddly soft, performance oriented Polartec fleece. They’ve suggested that, with the arrival of next northern hemisphere winter, they will bring to market a midweight grid-backed underwear fabric with 50% recycled content. And furthermore, they are at work on a 100% recycled option too. To get outdoor trade buyers excited, Malden will give away shirts made of the fabric at the upcoming OutDoor trade show in Germany, in late July. Will no doubt tie in well with Patagonia’s underwear recycling program. Malden also advise they are getting into the wool market, while alluding to other renewable (read non-petroleum) fibre developments. “This is just the tip of the iceberg in our work with renewables ... we have even more exciting projects in the pipeline for 2007.” ::Malden Polartec, via OutDoor.

FLEECE IS A GIFT FROM THE GODS. I truly love the two lightweight fleece shirts I have. IF Malden really wants to get outdoor buyers excited they would come to the premier Outdoor Website (AHEM MATT?) and offer free samples.
