They are defintely not a winter boot.” 11:22:25 PM 10/12/06 “got one of those exped downmat 7 short things from steepandcheap. very nice. the storage bag doubles as an inflation pump so you don't get damp air from your breath in the down. very well designed. a little heavy but not so bad if you consider the amount of insulation it provides from the ground. it's too short for me but with my feet on top of my pack it should work great. we shall see.” 12:32:24 AM 10/13/06 “I admit it...I have a thing for headlamps. I have at least 9 or 10 of the things. Everything from Petzl Duo's to some cheap, but serviceable, lamps I found at Walmart. I still am looking for the perfect one, but till I find it, the Petzl Tikka XP I used last Saturday night ain't bad at all. I wouldn't want to route find with it, but for it's weight and size it makes a great little item to throw in the pack. I realize this has probably been discussed to death, but it's the first piece of new gear I've bought in about a year. Damn....I gotta do something about that. I do need a new pair of skis.........” 12:53:46 AM 10/13/06 “I scored a pair of SPY "Clint" sunglasses at Steep and Cheap for 31.00 (w/shippin). They sweet and now I be cool...........” 7:23:59 AM 10/13/06 “Petzl headlamps are great. I bought this halogen/LED combo job that is like a frickin' laser or SDI weapon or something. I call it the "kid finder" because I take it on family camping trips where the little ones are likely to wind up wandering off into the woods to pee and get lost. Hasn't happened so far but one day...” 7:24:07 AM 10/13/06 “I want one of those Petzls also. I had a Princtontech and it's a POS. I went back to my full sized Petzl that has never failed in some seven years. I have the LED insert for it. I'll tell ya something that worries me and that is the inability to find boots and trail shoes that do NOT have goretex in them. I was helping my buddy pick out some new boots and they only had one or two boots there that didn't have it. I'm going to need new boots soon and I'm thinking I'm going to have trouble finding some. Even the trail runners have the shlt in them.” 7:58:24 AM 10/13/06 “LOL Nigal my son will get a headlamp, leave it somewhere in the house...and then get another one later. Send me the type you want (LOL) I got a couple.” 8:00:11 AM 10/13/06 “Hey ladyhiker, glad you thought they were comfy too! You'd think the air holes would have clued me in that they wouldn't hold heat too well. I wasn't planning on using them in serious snow or anything, though. AND they're totally good luck, because the first time I wore them, I found a newt hanging out right in the middle of the trail! YEAH baby. I love those things, they are cuter than cute.” 8:22:46 AM 10/13/06 “Petzl Myolite 3. 8:25:10 AM 10/13/06 “WOW...let me see if I can get him to ask his mother for it (LOL). I usually go with the lighter stuff.” 8:26:02 AM 10/13/06 “i have these trail runners that have gtx in them... they crinkle like wax paper when you walk in them. funny.” 8:28:24 AM 10/13/06 “WOO HOO the little brown truck just dropped off my new sleeping bag. it's awesome and fits so very well. i thought i might need the long but the regular fits just right.” 1:51:09 PM 10/13/06 “I gotta quit ordering from REI. I ordered a Insul Mat from them last Saturday and it's not here yet. They don't fill orders on the weekend and then on top of that it comes from Seattle. Campmor would have had an order here in three days. :(” 1:54:03 PM 10/13/06 “rei or rei outlet?” 1:56:53 PM 10/13/06 “REI.” 2:00:13 PM 10/13/06 “i have found no difference in shipping times from either. when i order and have them drop off at their local store that generally takes just under a week or less depending on when their next truck arrives, or so they tell me.” 2:06:17 PM 10/13/06 “Speaking of REI, The Oak Brook location in Chicago is having their annual dent/scratch sale this Saturday. I will be there with the little one. Just a daddy/daughter day!” 2:08:46 PM 10/13/06 “Picked up the following at REI today 2 Platapus containers 2 pair of new smart wool socks 1 beanie New Petzel Tikka Coffee strainer I was eying a new pair of boots but I couldn't do it.” 2:58:06 PM 10/14/06 “New cross country skis!! Now if I can just learn to ski without looking like an idiot.” 11:51:17 PM 10/14/06 “Scored a pair of Keen "Austins" with some Smartwool socks, a Origano folding bowl, and a smiley face thingy that goes in the top of my Nalgene bottle, and a zipclose pouch for my cell phone and wallet when sky's turn black...... but there was so much more but no more dough......” 7:40:45 AM 10/15/06 “not new gear... but gear i found. about a year ago i came across a pair of OR Rain Claw Mitts in a closeout bin at an outdoor store. These were discontinued by OR a while ago and are awesome gloves, very lightweight, breathable, and have that "lobster claw" thing that makes you look like yoda. i was pumped with the find and especially the price. i lost them almost a week later. i was bummed to say the least. well last night i was unpacking my snowshoes for a show-and-tell to the boy scouts and out plop my OR Rain Claw mitts! they were in the bag i kept my snowshoes in...” 3:32:10 PM 10/18/06 “cool Jimmy san...like Daniel Boone once said, "I have never been lost, but I will admit to being confused for several weeks."...such as it is with gear, I've found...LOL...” 6:18:57 PM 10/18/06 “I 'lose' gear in my house all the time, LOL.” 6:59:37 PM 10/18/06 “Lost a tarp one time...found it two months later on a trip when I was diggin through some other gear...” 7:03:31 PM 10/18/06 “My Mom and Sister came and cleaned up my kitchen today. Now I can't find anything! LOL” 7:06:46 PM 10/18/06 “i am so happy i found these things i think i am gonna sleep with them on tonight” 8:32:41 PM 10/18/06 “You go Jimmy! ;-)” 8:35:12 PM 10/18/06 “After hearing a few people raving about their Swissgear trekking poles I check them out. First thing was they weren’t ultralight. Heavier than your average Komperdells but not hatefully so. They have a tiny compass in the top of them and pretty good wrist straps. The snow baskets are removable and it comes with rubber tip covers. All in all a good set of starter poles for a great price ($20 for both). They’ll be more than enough for the wife.” 2:19:48 PM 10/21/06 “Caution Nigal. Who raved about them? I have a pair of mangled swiss gear poles in my den right now due to slipping on a wet wooden step, and sliding down about three more on my butt before I stopped. Both poles bent about 20 degrees. This was the first time I had used them too. I think I may try to straighten them just to see if it can be done, as neither have kinks in the tubing.” 2:33:48 PM 10/21/06 “Got some new gear yesterday. Its actually used stuff but to me.... A small pocket size waterproof flare pen, its a Brit military kit. It'll go in the kayak real nice. A few mil survival kits, gonna pick through and see what they have on sun. Another sling line with 2 biners and the best one isnt hiking stuff but better. A utility linemans harness, belt and spikes for tree climbing. Those will be fun.” 7:40:41 PM 10/21/06 “Finally got my Moonestone Lucid 15deg Bag. It's Nice. Much roomier than the Phantom.” 7:04:58 AM 10/22/06 ““Caution Nigal. Who raved about them? For $10 a piece I have no super high expectations for them. They are for the wife who is really small so they aren’t going to get abused too much. If they work they work.” 11:13:31 AM 10/22/06 “Good luck to her I hope they do.” 12:08:22 PM 10/22/06 “basecamp? what site is that?” 3:47:36 PM 10/22/06 “Backpacker.com” 6:54:31 PM 10/22/06 “i tested out my new western mountaineering sleeping bag this weekend and it is all-azz-kickin'. i am very pleased. finally!” 8:15:16 PM 10/22/06 no new gear for me as of recent... “but I did stay at Holiday Inn Express last night. actually, my bivvy sack near the Windsor Furnace Shelter.” 10:07:52 PM 10/22/06 “My newest peice of gear is almost a year old now. How lame is that?” 10:10:16 PM 10/22/06 “brunton L3 LED headlamp. sucker puts out a 200+ foot beam when batteries are new.” 9:56:22 AM 10/23/06 “Jumping Geezus! For that kind of cash the thing better boil water as well! Congrats on a great headlamp.” 9:58:02 AM 10/23/06 “that thing could be seen from space, crash” 10:02:34 AM 10/23/06 “Whoo hoo! Just ordered a bucket/sink and buck saw for paddle camping! ![]() ”11:21:17 AM 10/23/06 “I got a sweet pair of speakers for my MP3 player. They're real small at 1" X 3" and they weigh 1.3 oz. They run for 8 hours on one AA battery. Granted they don't sound like a set of Bose but they are fine for what I use them for. ”7:16:11 PM 10/23/06 NOT NEW but close! “YESSS>...gonna be 34 here tonight...was going through my closet and found my $50 Patagonia Mountain Parka...was a 250 parka but it had a small cut on the pocket trim. Hey they had a $50 tag...IT WERE MINE...Thought it left last summer for better locations....” 9:42:26 PM 10/23/06 “chelle has the swiss gear poles after a friend broke one of her komperdells. They are super heavy to use all day and the hard plastic handles blisterd her hands. Also the sections start to slip after a hard weekend” 2:08:31 AM 10/24/06 “WHOO HOO>..it finally came. Montane Hydra Lite Pullover. light weight and stuffs small.” 2:12:03 PM 10/26/06 “i got a new pair of possumdown gloves... new pair each year. trekking poles i use for snowshoeing wear holes in them.” 4:15:51 PM 10/26/06 “Also the sections start to slip after a hard weekend” OPIE 2:08:31 AM 10/24/06 Quotes page, here I come.” 4:56:48 PM 10/26/06 “I have been on a spending binge lately...
