Whoo Hoo....new gear!

“got one of those exped downmat 7 short things from steepandcheap. very nice. the storage bag doubles as an inflation pump so you don't get damp air from your breath in the down. very well designed. a little heavy but not so bad if you consider the amount of insulation it provides from the ground. it's too short for me but with my feet on top of my pack it should work great. we shall see.”

“I admit it...I have a thing for headlamps. I have at least 9 or 10 of the things. Everything from Petzl Duo's to some cheap, but serviceable, lamps I found at Walmart.

I still am looking for the perfect one, but till I find it, the Petzl Tikka XP I used last Saturday night ain't bad at all. I wouldn't want to route find with it, but for it's weight and size it makes a great little item to throw in the pack.

I realize this has probably been discussed to death, but it's the first piece of new gear I've bought in about a year.

Damn....I gotta do something about that.

“Petzl headlamps are great. I bought this halogen/LED combo job that is like a frickin' laser or SDI weapon or something. I call it the "kid finder" because I take it on family camping trips where the little ones are likely to wind up wandering off into the woods to pee and get lost. Hasn't happened so far but one day...”

“I want one of those Petzls also. I had a Princtontech and it's a POS. I went back to my full sized Petzl that has never failed in some seven years. I have the LED insert for it.

I'll tell ya something that worries me and that is the inability to find boots and trail shoes that do NOT have goretex in them. I was helping my buddy pick out some new boots and they only had one or two boots there that didn't have it. I'm going to need new boots soon and I'm thinking I'm going to have trouble finding some. Even the trail runners have the shlt in them.”

about a year ago i came across a pair of OR Rain Claw Mitts in a closeout bin at an outdoor store. These were discontinued by OR a while ago and are awesome gloves, very lightweight, breathable, and have that "lobster claw" thing that makes you look like yoda. i was pumped with the find and especially the price.

i lost them almost a week later.

i was bummed to say the least. well last night i was unpacking my snowshoes for a show-and-tell to the boy scouts and out plop my OR Rain Claw mitts! they were in the bag i kept my snowshoes in...”

“After hearing a few people raving about their Swissgear trekking poles I check them out. First thing was they weren’t ultralight. Heavier than your average Komperdells but not hatefully so. They have a tiny compass in the top of them and pretty good wrist straps. The snow baskets are removable and it comes with rubber tip covers. All in all a good set of starter poles for a great price ($20 for both). They’ll be more than enough for the wife.”

I have a pair of mangled swiss gear poles in my den right now due to slipping on a wet wooden step, and sliding down about three more on my butt before I stopped. Both poles bent about 20 degrees. This was the first time I had used them too. I think I may try to straighten them just to see if it can be done, as neither have kinks in the tubing.”

A small pocket size waterproof flare pen, its a Brit military kit. It'll go in the kayak real nice. A few mil survival kits, gonna pick through and see what they have on sun. Another sling line with 2 biners and the best one isnt hiking stuff but better. A utility linemans harness, belt and spikes for tree climbing. Those will be fun.”

Someone on basecamp said their brother has had his pair for 3 ½ years now. For $10 a piece I have no super high expectations for them. They are for the wife who is really small so they aren’t going to get abused too much. If they work they work.”

“I got a sweet pair of speakers for my MP3 player. They're real small at 1" X 3" and they weigh 1.3 oz. They run for 8 hours on one AA battery. Granted they don't sound like a set of Bose but they are fine for what I use them for.
