Went to T.J. Maxx today, and scored this sweet < href="http://www.tirelesstrekker.com/gregory/gr_sonic.htm">Gregory Sonic daypack for $16!

I saw this pack about 2-3 months ago for $30, couldn't justify it then. But now, why not?

I plan on taking it home, showing it to my wife, and saying "But look how much money I saved, dear!"”

Set of chums; backpacker's trowel (have been using a broken one for years); 2 containers of Ben's 100%; traveler's mosquito net (hangs from one point, big enough for two people); MSR Duralite Fry Pan (perfect. non-stick teflon, no handles, will work with my pot grippers and not too pricey); Duofold High Performance long sleeve shirt; a set of cheapo mesh zippered bags of different sizes from Coghlans; Columbia Shoshoni Falls Water Trunks (cheap, light and will work for hiking); a backpack rain cover for the wife's pack; sil nylon 5X8 stuff sack for electronic stuff; a mesh dunk bag for whatever; and a couple of synth t-shirts.

“Finially got my treking poles from STP. Dang shipping was soooo slow.
I like them already. The extended foam down the shaft will make it easyer to shift grips. Weight was less than 10 oz each on my scale.

“Went to REI last night to spend (part of) my 100 buck gift cert Cameron gave me for F's Day. I ended up getting some odds 'n' ends, but did get these clip-in water bottle shaped pockets for my Half Dome +2 tent - they weigh nothing; will try them out this weekend on our overnighter. Also got a replacement filter element for my PUR/Katadyn Hiker filter - I think I'm about due for that. Some food, too. Still have about 20 bucks left. Woulda bought a rain cover for my pack, but didn't know what size to get, so I'll have to go back for one of those.

Wife: "Why did you just get a bunch of odds 'n' ends?"

Me: "That's what I wanted."”

What is the throw rope for anyway? I bought it because I figured I might need it someday for errr somethin.”

“A lot of times you will encounter a waterfall that is impossible to float down, so you hold onto the rope and throw the kayak over the falls.”

“The stove and PreCip came while I was out getting the Moonstone jacket.

The Moonstone is the Cirrus line, 1.5# --- windproof and water resistant and Orange/Red. Looks good for winter with the Dupont thermo fill. Picked it up fer 90.00 bones, regular 190.00.

Can't wait to try the stove. Looks like I can carry a good amount of fuel inside the stove. It has a sealing cap on top. Very interesting!”

Bought my air tickets to Denver for the Rocky Mt. trip (end of this month) and ordered my new Western Mountaineering UltraLite sleeping bag from BackcountryGear.com for this trip.
They were the only place I could find a 6' right zip 2003 model in stock. Should have it within a couple of weeks. This makes my third WM bag bought within the last couple of years. Woo Hoo!”

“Just got my Tarptent.

A few issues.
Ditch the front pole and use your trekking pole. The supplied pole will just slowly sink into soft earth. I have to extend the pole quite a bit to get headroom. I'm 6' 6" and my head brushes to top when sitting in it. That would suck in a rainstorm.

The Ti tent stakes are nice but once again aren't very good at keeping taught in soft earth. So I'll be packing a couple of thicker stakes just in case.

Overall I like it, but it will take some getting used to.”

I usually put a flat rock or piece of wood under the front pole. I have a brand spanking new set of trekking poles I will try next time.
