new pack! (yeah another pack)

Got myself a new daypack, will primarily use it for climbing gear.

Osprey's just tend to fit me very very well.

Got the Osprey Stratos 24 - really like the way the mesh panel keeps the pack off my back - and the options for how to carry a water combined with the "straight jacket" system, make it a very functional and versitile pack.

Don't have this yet, but now that I've got my JRB quilt sold, I'll be ordering a Nunatak Arc Alpinist Quilt. Whoo Hoo, in Fire Engine Red!

Did I just buy your JRB Hudson River quilt?

If your name is Brad R. then yes, and if you're wondering why, I'm going with a Nunatak quilt instead of the JRB. Is because I'm a ground sleeper, and would like a sewn foot-box, and a slightly warmer quilt too. The one advantage with the JRB quilt is the draw-cord footbox, where you have the option to vent, which I have done with it, and it works really well. Now why I'm I selling this again. Duooh!

I am sure that you will be happy with your Nunatak, I have heard nothing but praise for them.

I am planning on using this as a Underquilt for a new hammock set up. I am planning on still using my WM Summerlite, WM Ultralite, and MH Phantom 0 bags from my ground sleeping days.

i love both my jrb quilts. the rigging for the hennessy is simply wonderful and the versatility of using it on the ground or int he hammock is a gift.

in the end it's down and box-baffled nylon. it's all about loft.

hmmm... you just gave me an idea on maximizing the quilt's efficiency in a hammock. Since "it's all about loft", try fastening the quilt on the underbelly of the hammock instead of squishing it by laying on it.

that's what the jacks-r-better system does. it has sewn-in loops and drawstrings on either end that form-fit it to the underside of the hammock. the "nest" quilt has a slit cut in the bottom that matches the opening on the hennesy hammock. it is an amazingly warm and snug shelter.

JRB has introduced the Mt Washington quilt which is supposed to take you into single digits and below. Three inches of loft with double differential cut.

oh lordy... a better winter quilt. i have the old rag mountan quilt and -have- slept just fine in it down to single digits. the mt washington sounds like an upgrade but i would have to sell my "old" one first (used like on 6 trips).

Haven't slept in it yet... but it seems to be a nice one. The bridge edsign is easy for me to get out of whikch is important. hehehe. As long as the zipper doesn't jam I should be ok. I was thinking of trying it out tonight....

I managed about two hours in it tonight. It will be fine on the trail when I get some details taken care of. I don't sleep all that well in the back yard in any event. Plus at 56 F it is borderline as to what I need to wear/have to stay warm. I didn't care about futzing around in the back yard. But I think, all in all it will be quite a nice addition to my kit.

We picked up some sweet little osprey daypacks this weekend. The Jansport daypack I'd had since late '89 finally died this past spring, with Pinky peeing on it for the last time. No cat allowed on this one.

I dunno yet... those purchases come next. I'm looking at Silvretta bindings... those seem to be the choice amongst folks around here.

I have both Silvretta and Dynafits (Dynafits won't work on your boots). I can highly recommend the Silvrettas. I have the 500's and they take both my plastic alpine boots (Scarpa Invernos) and AT/Freeride boots. The new models don't need a screwdriver to adjust from one to the other.

I put the Silvrettas on my Canadian army skis for strictly backcountry use, but they worked fine with my AT/Freeride boots and skis too. They are not step-in, but Model 550 are. I don't know if the latter can be used with mountaineering boots, but they should be excellent for freeriding.

I have also used the Fritschi Diamirs and they are great too. Both makes allow you to switch from freeride mode to touring mode and back without bending over (a friend is sure to push you over when you do that), although you do have to bend over to raise the heel supports. The Fritschis are distributed in the US by Black Diamond - they will not take alpine boots.

I bought G3 'Baron' skis (we canucks have been going nuts lately after years of having to shop in the States to get decent gear - G3, Arc'terix, Integral Designs, et c.).

I bought the Dynafit bindings because I wanted something Eurosexy to go with my flashy new skis. If I had it to do over again I'd get the 550's or the Diamirs.

While I adore my Barons, Movement skis are gorgeous too.

Good luck,

Doug

cool - thanks for the info.... I'm thinking the model i was drooling over in the store last week was a Silvretta 500, might have been 550 - it was 5 sumthin.

I was looking at the Black Diamond skis, but I'm probably going to really rely on the guy at Neptune here (the local backcountry ski experts) to steer me into something along the 'middle of the road' range that will work fairly equally well at the resorts as well as in the backcountry. I splurged on the boots thinking that was probably the best place in the system to go 'all out' so to speak, secondly on the bindings - the ski will probably be something that I'll let be the 'weak link' as I'm simply not that skilled and won't really benefit from a real performance ski.

Cool. G3 make strap-on skins. I* saw them last year at the Cascade centre near Lake Placid, NY. I hadn't seen strap-ons since the 70's, but won't use anything else - mine are US Army surplus.

Looks like I'll be getting my Nunatak Arc Alpinist quilt earlier than usual.
They were already in production of one but in a different color, so I just switched my color choice from Brick Red to Sage Green.
Should be arriving within 4 weeks, versus, the normal 8 week wait. Just in time for the Fox River trip, "Maybe" ?

Copngrats, Mike - that's really cool. Now you can scare the holy shyte out of yourself with kick-butt gear. The freerides rock and I think they can go to DIN 12, is that right?

My skis scare the puke outta me. It'll take me years (that I don't have) to learn to control them.

Rock on and pray for snow. Wait - you don't have to pray for snow like we do. Lucky, Dude. I'm jealous.
