that would be... awesome. truly.

i am still good for what was it, september?

i have not had much of a chance to climb cracks but EVERY workout at the gym i spend time practicing various jams, laybacking, etc. that can get strenuous but the feeling of getting a SOLID jam is hard to beat. i have a tape glove i recycle for this part of the workout... old and manky now. i need to make a new one.

you like those master cams? i sort of wish i had those rather than the powercams and TCUs that i have. those things don't have as nice a feel and can be hard to clean, but damn are they tenacious... like a fishhook or something.

yep - the week after labor day.

yeah - i do like the mastercams. I learned to trad climb with a guy that likes the TCU's but like you say, i found them hard to clean and don't particularly like the U stem design. I use C3's for my small cams - i like the trigger action better than the TCU. Most people it seems don't like the C3 - they are tricky to place (but i think that's the case with ALL small cams) - but when they're right - man they are RIGHT - that said, i've not fallen on one - yet. :)

The mastercams seem to be a good complement to the C4's - not exactly the same sizes, but good overlaps. Seems like the orange and the red are the ones I use the most - likewise with the green and the red C4 (.75 and 1)

New Balance MO1500GT
Thought I'd give these a try! Put some superfeet in them and for break in, I wore them for 8 hours at work today with my Smartwool socks and polypro liners.. so far so good, I think they will be good boots! Test run next saturday!

I got a new (to me) shelter today. I got a Gossamer Gear Spinnshelter shaped tarp with a Alpinlite Gear Bug Shelter to put inside. I had the Alpinlite Bug Shelter custom made a bit bigger than stock at

42" width head end
28" width foot end
38" height head end
21" height foot end
84" long (vertical walls)

The weight is 9.7oz

Total Shelter Weight:

SpinnShelter (including guylines) 10.3 ounces
SpinnShelter stuff sack 0.4 ounces
Alpinelite Bug Shelter (including guylines) 9.7 ounces
AlpineliteBug Shelter stuff sack 0.2 ounces
Easton 6" Aluminum Pegs (2) 0.6 ounces
GG TiteLite Ti Stakes (10) 2.2 ounces

23.4 ounces for a double wall shelter!

I also got two new (to me) packs to try out, the Gossamer Gear Mariposa Plus and the Six Moon Designs Starlite. I probably wont be keeping both, but thought I would try them both out in the field first.

I like your set-up Mocs. I had a MLD Patrol shelter in Sil, but sold it, and ordered another one, but in Cuben Fiber.
The latest Spinnaker fabrics are supposed to be more waterproof as well?
I 've had some minor misting through, with my MLD spinnaker Grace Solo tarp.

Cuben is 100% waterproof or so they claim?

I like the fact that you can close the front beak with your spinnshelter. Its probably what I like the most about them.

Here's a few

ncthiker-

I guess you liked your Patrol shelter, if you are getting another one, but how is it to get in and out of? It seemed to me, that with the fixed break, that entry/exit would be awkward, though perhaps easier to set up than a shelter with doors like the SpinnShelter. I found someone selling the SpinnShelter for half price so I had to grab it.

The beak isn't too difficult to enter under, unless its pitched tight to the ground, and even then its not bad.
I think, I like the simplicity of the beak, with no velcro closure, zippers etc.
Although, the longer, enclosed beak of the Spinnshelter, would keep one drier in a rain storm, with shifting and, or full frontal winds.
If I needed to, I could sleep with my head at the foot of the Patrol, but would still need a bivy, to keep my feet dry. (During a bad storm)
Most of my trips are in heavy timbered area's, where you can usually, get good wind screens from heavy tree cover.

Got myself a couple of things recently: a Montbell U.L. Windjacket, a stuffsack that doubles as a daypack and I finaly put together my own little First Aid kit.

The U.L. Windjacket packs together into a tiny stuff sack the size of a sunglass case or so. It's extremly thin, but will keep the wind and some light rain away. I'll have it with my as an emergency for walks or day hikes. It won't replace my gore-tex on real hikes.

I love my windshirt - carry it on every trip (it's so light, why not). It's a great layer to start with as the sun goes down and a little chill begins to develop.

From all the slightly used gear I've sold recently:

Sold:
MLD Exodus pack
GG Whisper pack
TT Double Rainbow
TT Contrail
BA SL-1

I've finally relized that I always use a tarp now anyway, so bye, bye tents.
Although, I'm considering a BA SL-2, as my one and only free-standng tent? Well this and my MSR Hubba.

Sweet! What a day at work I had. Ended up selling my 9mm today and just spent the money on this handy bike gps. Got it for $170 (factory refurb)

Rugged, lightweight Edge attaches easily to the stem or handlebars of your bike with the included bike mount. Just turn it on, acquire GPS satellites and go. Edge 305 automatically measures your speed, distance, time, calories burned, altitude, climb and descent, and records this data for your review. For extra-precise climb and descent data, Edge 305 also incorporates a barometric altimeter to pinpoint changes in elevation.

Other Edge features:

* Easy to install; no calibration required. Just snap it into the bike mount and go.
* High-sensitivity GPS receiver tracks your position even in tree cover and canyons, making it extremely reliable for distance and speed information.
* Virtual Partner® lets you race a virtual competitor over a specified distance and speed.
* Courses let you race against a previously recorded workout, so you can compare your current and past performances over the same ride.
* Auto Pause® pauses the timer when you slow down or stop and resumes when you speed up again, so you can focus on your ride.
* Auto Lap® automatically starts a new lap each time you pass a specified location or travel a preset distance.

Awesome gear find: I have replaced my old fleece jacket that I've had since I was 17 with a new one from Patagonia. I picked up the new fleece for 29 bucks and some change -- who knew I could wear a Kids Size XL! They're clothes are soooo much cheaper too. TEHEHEHEHEH YAY.

I wonder if they make down jackets for kids?! I can save SOOO MUCH MONEY!

I noted that zappos.com has golite stuff and has a 3lb, 4200 ci pack on sale for $120. I've got something similar, or I may have picked it up.

I did get a couple of pairs of, gulp, golite boots to check out. They look comfy and don't have any gtx, which seems harder and harder to find these days...

GG Litetrek4 poles with straps, and got the Golite Jam2 the the other day in a medium. It just fits, but seems slightly small for me?
So, I went back to Prolitegear.com, and now they do a size large, where they didn't before. Yep, ordered a large. I'll either return the medium or keep it for a loaner?

I got the dog some new gear. We went to the beach last weekend and the sand always makes her paws so raw she has trouble hiking out at the end of the weekend. So we bought her these rubber sock things. They were perfect. She didn't like them at first but after she got used to them she was fine.

Dog booties are a must for sand hiking. They never really get used to them, but they save their paws.

Picked up a heavy ass enamel dining set for car camping. Should be able to pass it on to the kids...

During a snow trip, the battery cap on my 3W brinkman LED headlamp fell down a crevase (don't ask). I haven't gotten around to writing the company to ask for a replacement, so I bought a black diamond Spot. It's sorta like the other black diamond I have, except the batteries are carried up front.

Drove oveer to Chateaugay, NY yesterday to pick up two giant goose decoy/blinds. You sit on a chair in the goose and pop it up when they come in (Christmas dinner). I thought it was a harebrained idea, but my buddy and his brother used them last year and they work. These two are for my buddy Bob and me.

Season's coming.

Nope. I was amazed. I tried it and you can look into the eyes of geese through the slots as they walk round you. Your legs below the knees stick out, but we were dressed in camo.

Besides, the idea is so silly we had to have one. We're going to arrange a pre-season photo-op with the four of us in a field (before with the goose down - after with the goose up and our mugs showing) among the other decoys.

I just have to get a digital camera and post some pictures.

I really like your shelter. When you were describing it earlier, I couldn't visualize. But the pics. are awesome. How do you have the top of the bug net shelter bit suspended, exactly?

I'll be interested in hearing what you think after you've used it in a lot of different weather conditions. I would imagine you'd be happy with it...whats on the bottom of the bug net portion---anything waterproof?

new asolo boots... thought i could get through one more season without them but i now need them for next week... my 12 pointers won't work well with trail runners! got the Asolo FSN 95 GTX boots again... first two pair were totally awesome! i have the next step up but i am not ready to commit to climbing all day in those frankenstein boots.

i have to get used to heavier boots and a heavier pack. no two ways around it.

i also got a pair of rap gloves. i they were cheap and i like the pmi design with the pull tabs.

have you guys ever seen this:

i have never, not even once, in fourty years, had problems with critters of any kind in my stuff either while backpacking or camping. apparently though it's so common that there are multiple companies that make this kind of thing. i've heard that this is the least expensive one because he only sells it online and doesn't advertise.
