"Honor never grows old, and honor rejoices the heart of age. It does so because honor is, finally, about defending those noble and worthy things that deserve defending, even if it comes at a high cost. In our time, that may mean social disapproval, public scorn, hardship, persecution, or as always, even death itself.
The question remains: What is worth defending? What is worth dying for? What is worth living for?"

Now that the nicer weather is coming, I will sadly ride with the Patriot Guard Riders to show the families that people do care. Some of us who ride are against what's going on, and some are all for it, but it's about respect for those people who give all.

KABUL, Afghanistan - An Army sergeant complained in a rare opinion article that the U.S. flag flew at half-staff last week at the largest U.S. base in Afghanistan for those killed at Virginia Tech but the same honor is not given to fallen U.S. troops here and in Iraq.

In the article issued Monday by the public affairs office at Bagram military base north of Kabul, Sgt. Jim Wilt lamented that his comrades' deaths have become a mere blip on the TV screen, lacking the "shock factor" to be honored by the Stars and Stripes as the deaths at Virginia Tech were.

"I find it ironic that the flags were flown at half-staff for the young men and women who were killed at VT, yet it is never lowered for the death of a U.S. service member," Wilt wrote.

Sorry but no, he's wrong.
That's what memorial day is for.

So during wartime we should fly the flag at half mast (meaning the nation is in mourning) the entire time?

i get his point, but jezus.....sorry to have to state the obvious, but with the rate they're dying over there the flag would never be at full staff

That may be what Memorial Day is for, but the soldier has a valid point. If the flag is always at half staff, then that's where it should be. It will either provoke some to think or, after some time, numb them to the ongoing reality.

The state of Michigan orders every state and federal building to lower the flag everytime a soldier is killed from our state. It stays down three days for each death. You'd think it would become meaningless and that it being down, more often than not, just become something that isn't noticed but it's not and most do notice. It's a wonderful day when it's flown at it's full height.
The buildings that follow the rule are police, schools, firehouses, city buildings, etc, etc.

California flies all flags as at half mast all the time as long as the Iraq war continues.

This winter, thousands of U.S. servicemen and women are spending the holidays far away from their families, and calling home can cost them a large part of their paycheck. Troops stationed in Iraq, Afghanistan, and around the globe actually have to pay for phone calls to the U.S.—and many of them just don't have a lot of money to spare. Imagine being stuck in Iraq, Afghanistan, or Korea and being unable to afford a call to your spouse or kids on Christmas or New Year's Eve.

That's why we're helping the USO to provide thousands of phone cards to troops in Iraq, Afghanistan and around the world to let them call their friends, family and loved ones this holiday season.

These phone cards don't cost a lot—only $15 each, but they are incredibly valuable, providing about 45 minutes of talk-time and holiday wishes for service members.

Can you give $15 to buy a phone card for troops stationed overseas? Click here to chip in:

https://civ.moveon.org/donatec4/holiday_troops.html?id=11829-4327567-QLqvKx&t=2

MoveOn members are committed to seeing our troops come home as quickly as possible, and we'll keep working to make that happen. But right now, supporting the USO is a simple way to make a genuine difference in the lives of brave men and women who've sacrificed a lot for our country.

Can you chip in to buy phone cards for troops stationed overseas this holiday season? Click here to contribute:

Happy holidays from all of us and thanks for all you do.

WALTON COUNTY, Ga. -- A woman with a long list of aliases and husbands remains in the Walton County Jail.

Officials arrested Shauna Keith last week. They said the 27-year-old woman married five men, all members of the military.

She is also accused of having five social security numbers.

According to authorities, Keith married a man in the army in Kentucky in 2006. She then allegedly married a marine on the front porch of a home outside Walnut Grove on Christmas Eve 2007. Officials also said Keith told the marine’s family she was the daughter of 82nd Airborne Division Commander Maj. Gen. David Rodriguez.

Officials said Keith went back to her apartment in North Carolina while her new husband went to the Marine base in Camp Lejeune. Officials said she was living with another marine when they located her. Authorities said Keith has married personnel from every branch of the armed services except the U.S. Coast Guard.

She's a Mormon.

Nothing new. There were lots of "bar girls" in the early 60's that married more than one sailor just for the i.d. card. Those who married in multiples generally didn't want to go to the states, but were interested in health care and commissary privileges.
