Well with Spring inching it's way in and summer right around the bend, It got me to thinking about the things I love to do the most.
One thing that I look forward to is my volunteer work with homeless and underprivlage(sp) children here in NYC.
Last year I was able to join a great group of volunteers and take out groups of children on a dayhike, swimming, canoeing trip. I tell you, there is nothing like it in the world. It did tear at my heart stings. But I walked away with an inner feeling that can not be put into words.
But when you see a child smile because he has just seen his or her first sunrise, that in itself is breath taking!
The smile meant more to me then the sunrise did.

So if you know of a child or even a family that would benefit from going on a day hike or a weekend camping trip, then do it. I promise you, you will feel like a new person!

I've registered(?) with Big City Mountaineers, a group that takes inner-city youths on backcountry expeditions. I selected a July time slot.

I received a letter from them confirming that they heard from me, but nothing else. I left a voice mail with them.

Everything's still up in the air as it stands now...

That is so cool Maple...I don't know of kids like that but I am hoping to take my niece, who will be 4 in May, on a few outings this summer. She loves being outside and I think this will be a great way to bond with Aunt Dee Dee! :)

sometimes, it may be a last min thing. Its so had to organize theses programs. I know with our group, all the shelter has to do is show up. we provied food, guides,water,ect..
even getting them to the area can be a hassle!

I would wait till around the end of June and start banging on doors if you have not heard from them. You did good gojo by volunteering!

good for you crazy, i am sure if you looked a little you will find more groups that do these kinds of things then you can inmagine. If your really are interested, then call your local police depatment and ask. If they don't have this kind of thing, then who knows. maybe you will be the start of somethin good!
Go for it and have fun!!
