The link to the permit application for the Inyo National Forest is gone, but I found this other site that has the application:

Big day today: I just faxed my permit app. for the "southern option" for our half-JMT this summer. The dicey part will be the exit quota for Trail Crest/Whitney Portal - saw that some dates are already filled. I've been wondering what would happen if you got there on a different day than your permit said (got delayed, went faster than planned, etc.). Would they tie you up with some rope and not let you hike out? Fine you? How much?

OK, I see that the USFS has billed my credit card for the reservation fee! Now I just have to wait and see if I got my first, second, or third choices!!

Good luck BM. When you going?

Trail entry on 8/5, exit via Whitney 8/19, give or take a day or so on either end with 2nd and 3rd choices. I think I'm going to miss you guys when you come flying by....

Sounds like you will be OK! Congratulations!

Are you going in at Onion Valley?

Bishop Pass, per your suggestion a couple months ago, with really low mileage the first few days....

Actually, we may still change plans and do the northern "half," depending on whether my brother-in-law and niece join us, so we may eat the permit cost, but in the overall scheme of things, it's not going to break the bank....

YEE-FREAKIN'-HAW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Got my reservation confirmation for my southern JMT itinerary - it's my first choice!!!

To tell you the truth, the other two choices would have worked OK, but it's great to know I'm set!!

Bowlderman - It's a good feeling to get your permit! Where did you say you were going in at?

Bowlderman - did you still want the bear canister for your son? I sent you an email but never heard back . . . it probably landed in your junk folder.

Aaack! Yes, please, gforce. I thought I put your email from your profile in my white list, but I probably botched it. I will try again and send you another one.

Phil! [Assuming this is the itinerary we do] we would enter at Bishop Pass on 8/5 and exit at W. Portal on the 19th. It's a slow pace, designed for lots of side trips, napping, etc. We're still considering a northern itinerary - I apply for those permits next week....

I just sent you an email from a different account, gforce. I think the one from before doesn't like your domain....

Bowlderman - Thanks! I won't ask you that question again!!! You should have a great trip with two weeks to do it. Perhaps you could do a very short side trip to Bullfrog Lake and look at the Kearsarge Lakes again. Are you going to resupply there? ( or Charlotte Lake?)

For that itinerary, we will either resupply at Taboose Pass or from Cedar Grove. There's actually one itinerary option in which my brother-in-law and niece hike in from Cedar Grove and join the hike there. If BowlderGal (and a friend or two) are going to do the resupply, I will probably leave it to her/them - we can make adjustments in the mileage to arrive at either place on a convenient day.

bowlderman - OK. Resupply from Cedar Grove is a lot of uphill!! Taboose is no picnic also. But at least you have friends to help you.

I wonder if people cache very much anymore. I know it has pros & cons.
