Don't tick off a country girl!View MessagesI knew I liked this girl. “From the Washington Post.... Pfc. Jessica Lynch, rescued Tuesday from an Iraqi hospital, fought fiercely and shot several enemy soldiers after Iraqi forces ambushed the Army's 507th Ordnance Maintenance Company, firing her weapon until she ran out of ammunition, U.S. officials said yesterday. Lynch, a 19-year-old supply clerk, continued firing at the Iraqis even after she sustained multiple gunshot wounds and watched several other soldiers in her unit die around her in fighting March 23, one official said. The ambush took place after a 507th convoy, supporting the advancing 3rd Infantry Division, took a wrong turn near the southern city of Nasiriyah. "She was fighting to the death," the official said. "She did not want to be taken alive." Full Story” 9:13:41 AM 4/03/03 “She probably has farm implements and knows how to use 'em!” 9:16:56 AM 4/03/03 “I was just looking for the POW thread so I could post this. When I saw the title of this thread, I figured it was the same story. I don't know how the others fought, but her tenacity might be why she is so beat up. Both legs broken, one arm broken, gun shot wounds and stabbed to boot.” 9:19:28 AM 4/03/03 “Let's see, she drives a truck and she takes a wrong turn and gets lost. Then she gets wounded in a fire fight and is taken prisoner. She ends up in a hospital where she gets rescued by some big burly guys. How does this make her the hero or heroine?” 9:29:40 AM 4/03/03 “hmmmm...I'd say both.” 9:31:12 AM 4/03/03 “She is a hero, she put up a fight, she's suffered serving her country. Whether you support the war or not her spirit should be admired. It was not her decision to go to war.” 9:31:24 AM 4/03/03 Amen to that “I admire her courage and her fight. Lets face it. War is not a good thing. Ever. Once our Nation has gone to war its our duty as civilians to show as much support as we can to our troops. It could be US out there.” 9:54:47 AM 4/03/03 “i'm glad she's safe, i'm surprised she wasn't killed considering she fought so tenaciously. sort of sad a 19 yr old is being exposed to this, i should be over there.” 10:05:49 AM 4/03/03 “I admire her spirit and tenacity and am glad to see her alive. Also, I wonder if the war-grinding PR machine might not be embellishing for the public, to help put a face on the soldiers and garner even more support for dubya, his war and his tax bills for war money. If not embellishing, they will play up to the hilt. As I said, what better face to put on the war than a cute 19-year-old fighting beyond her means in a situation their unit should not have been in. She did it, by God. I do admire her, but not what this will be made to represent. I saw it mentioned on the other thread about Playboy. That sounds about Playboy style, "Girls of Iraq." f'in jerks. However, it will be interesting to see how she plays her newfound fame.” 10:06:18 AM 4/03/03 “She is going to be on hurting woman for a long time to come. The injuries and wounds might not be life threatening, but as many breaks as she sustained will ultimately be life altering to some extent, particuarly as she gets older. Our military people did not ask to go to war. They were sent there to do a job, whether we might or might not agree over the necessity of the job. They put themselves in harm's way, and they fall into situations that are both beyond their control and life-threatening. They take bullets, are wounded or killed. Even if they don't get hit, they endure hardships that most of us would avoid if we could. It's not a friggin backpacking trip out there. It's war. They may not perform heroic deeds. They may not die in heroic ways. But they are there and they are doing the job they were sent to do. That's a lot closer to heroism than most of us will ever come.” 10:13:16 AM 4/03/03 “Gear Slut - Would would still wonder if the soldier were a hero or not if the injured soldier were a man? Just curious... A hero is someone who is courageous and risks his/her life so selflessly. How she got into that situation is irrelevant. She is a hero. Regardless of whether or not we agree w/ the war, they are all still heros. They are much braver people than I.” 10:13:46 AM 4/03/03 Gear Slut “First, she didn't take the wrong turn, her commander did, that is how it works in the military. Second, she may or may not drive a truck, its a maintenance unit, she could have a different job. I don't know how our job descriptions should have anything to do with whether or not our actions should be considered heroic. Perhaps it was her actions that caused her to become so injured that she ended up in the hospital where her location could be known and she couldn't be moved, thus allowing her to be in a position to be rescued by those big burly men. Third, the story said she was taken prisoner after being injured AND running out of amunition. Finally, she is a hero because the people want her to be a hero. You don't get to decidse that for us.” 10:16:53 AM 4/03/03 “The whole scenario - from start to present - drips of heroism. Her comrades that fell during that particular firefight are heroes. Some very well may have sacrificed themselves in her defense - as she may have done for them. We'll know soon enough. She, fighting to the death, then stubbornly clinging to life. The impromptu(?) hodgepodge of warriors that rescued her are heroes. The surgeons performing as we speak... heroes. God bless our warriors, and may the souls of the fallen rest in peace. BTW - The governor of WV announced a full college scholarship so's she can get her teaching degree. Kewl.” 10:33:08 AM 4/03/03 “Silver Star on the Horizon for this young lady.” 10:40:16 AM 4/03/03 “LOL @ gear slut. Stirring the pot.” 10:44:00 AM 4/03/03 “We'll soon have him a big, hot crow pie to go with that booger stew.” 10:46:29 AM 4/03/03 LOL God Bless America “And freedom of expression. I don't agree with all that is said but I am soooo glad we live where can speak our minds. I left the country to serve as a peacetime volunteer in a 3rd world nation. I came back feeling changed. As regards the USA... It may not be perfect. Yeah. We've got our faults. But its STILL the best thing going. I came home, kissed her soil. My husband and I got busy adding on to our family. Making yet one more little Patriot. He'll be 13 in May. I wouldn't change a thing. :-)” 10:57:50 AM 4/03/03 “She is a hero. As far as her getting lost, it wasnt her fault. The convoy leader is responsible for the direction the convoy takes. Mistakes happen. Its how you deal with them that makes you a hero.” 11:01:11 AM 4/03/03 “The whole story sounds like it has been over dramatized. I see the propaganda machines just getting cranked right up over this photogenic young lady.” 11:13:30 AM 4/03/03 “The governor of WV announced a full college scholarship so's she can get her teaching degree. Kewl." gojo 10:33:08 AM 04/03/03 I am glad that she is being offered that opportunity but I have mixed feelings about it. She isn't the first woman to be captured, tortured and finally released/rescued. We don't know what has happened to the other 22 yr old woman who was with her or all of the men plus you have have 30 yr old female that is being held captive along with others. I just hope that they get the same response/treatment as PFC Lynch has received when they get rescued/released.” 11:21:21 AM 4/03/03 Gear Slut “She's a hero because she's defending your right to be a complete a$$hole.” 11:30:17 AM 4/03/03 “In that case, I appear to be in good company right here.” 11:35:21 AM 4/03/03 “no, pretty much just you” 11:47:52 AM 4/03/03 “Burn!” 11:56:23 AM 4/03/03 “Making fun of injured POW's doesn't get you elected prom queen, that's for sure.” 11:57:35 AM 4/03/03 “Who's making fun? I'm just trying to see through all the spin doctoring. In truth, I have a great deal of sympathy for her.” 12:15:01 PM 4/03/03 “I think she should get the Combat Infantryman's Badge even though she's in a maintenance MOS.” 12:15:37 PM 4/03/03 lizs “I am about sick of your whiny pathetic drivel. The highlights of this story were not released by the pentagon, but by a member of the press. You know the press don't you? The bloodthirsty #&%!$ers who jump at the chance to embellish the truth. Freedom of the press has turned into a license to deceive and fabricate. We have caught you at it repeatedly.” 12:17:34 PM 4/03/03 Can you blame Slick Willy for this?? “She shouldn't have been there. I don't have problems with woman in the armed forces but she and the other one were to close to the front, if you ask me. There are plenty of able body men that should have been there in their postions. We don't need our daughters, moms, and wives that close to the action. Its just wrong that this happened. And I hope it won't happen again.” 1:56:55 PM 4/03/03 “The fact that she is a female makes us all a bit more taken aback...afterall, it is not a common occurrence (or has not been in the past, anyway) that a female gets taken as POW. We've become so desensitized to war, that perhaps the angle of a woman POW is the easiest media material for shock value. I don't know if it makes her any more of a hero than any other person who dies or is captured while fighting for (or serving in any other way) their country. Her gender certainly doesn't make a difference as to whether she is or is not a hero. She certainly IS a hero...one of many, many heroes. I hope to see more of them safely returned to their families. Peter, I don't understand your position.” 2:18:36 PM 4/03/03 “Can you blame Slick Willy for this?? "She shouldn't have been there. I don't have problems with woman in the armed forces but she and the other one were to close to the front, if you ask me. There are plenty of able body men that should have been there in their postions. We don't need our daughters, moms, and wives that close to the action. Its just wrong that this happened. And I hope it won't happen again." Peter Glideswell 01:56:55 PM 04/03/03 During the 1st Gulf War the President was a guy named Bush. We had some female soliders who got captured and finally released during that war also, so no you can't blame slick willy for this.” 2:31:30 PM 4/03/03 “I heard a female Army interviewee on the radio this morning. Her husband is already there, and she'll go there after her 45 day maternity leave. What? A woman leave her 45 day old baby to go fight a war? That's plain sad... Call me sexist, but I disagree about that call. Poor baby.” 2:41:15 PM 4/03/03 “Couldn't agree w/ you more Gojo. Bad, bad, bad decision making.” 3:05:10 PM 4/03/03 “Why is OK for the man to leave his family to serve our country and not a woman? Perhaps they shouldn't have had children if the possibilty existed that either or both would be sent to war.” 3:10:17 PM 4/03/03 “I just saw an interview with PFC Lynch's parents on PMSNBC about a half hour ago. They said the doctors could not find any gunshot or stab wounds on her. As usual with most stories the truth is slow to come out. I'm sure we'll find out in due time if she ran out of ammunition while defending herself and others against the Iraqis. She's still a hero in my book. Anyone who serves in the military and defends their country honorably is a hero to me.” 3:54:24 PM 4/03/03 “Make babies, not war!” 3:56:15 PM 4/03/03 “their country = our country, the United States of America. Just clarifing for you Libs.” 3:57:58 PM 4/03/03 “Can I ask why you feel the need to post this? Why do any of you feel the need to post the news on this board? Is it so people will agree with you? Is it so people disagree with you? Is it to help us all learn? Is it bordom and Trollism? Every freakin board I visit has the same #&%!$ I just read on washingtonpost.com in it... but with some dumbasses comments. I'm sick of it... I may stop surfing and do some work!” 3:58:25 PM 4/03/03 “Go for it tarpy! Get some work done!” 4:02:09 PM 4/03/03 “This girl is a real hero. As is all of the men and women fighting in our armed forces. Personally I don't think women should be that close to combat, but she doesn't have to live her life on my personal feelings. This is what makes this country a great nation - we are free to do as we chose. If this is what she wanted to do, I stand behind her all the way. I applaud her for the grit she showed during her capture. I have also heard a story about a young guy that went awal and did not deplore to the fight. He later showed up at the base holding his mothers hand and his sister carrying his dufflebag. If this story is true, I think that this guy should be taken next to this ex-pow girl where she can work him over with her good arm. I am all for people not being forced to fight, but he knew what he was getting into when he signed up. Who knows, if he had of went he may have been able to prevent someone else from being killed. Sorry I'll get off of the soapbox now. BAMA” 5:25:03 PM 4/03/03 “Thank God for americans like her!” 6:15:12 PM 4/03/03 “I am about sick of your whiny pathetic drivel. Freedom of the press has turned into a license to deceive and fabricate. We have caught you at it repeatedly." bacpac 12:17:34 PM 04/03/03 once again I think he right, apparently she was not shot or stabbed. At lesast that is was the parents are saying this evening. truely another case of the media over sensationalizing a story. regardless of what happened in my eyes all our service men and woman are heros just for being there for us.” 7:14:31 PM 4/03/03 “The real heros are the SEAL and Ranger teams that rescued her.” 7:26:11 PM 4/03/03 Black F&%$#@* Sabbath “Fell in love with a country girl, morning sunshine She was up from a nether world, just to bust another soul Her eyes were an endless flame, holy lightning Desire with a special name, made to snatch your soul away, yeah We sailed away on a crimson tide, gone forever Left my heart on the other side, all to break it into bits Her smile was a winter song, a Sabbath ending Don't sleep or you'll find me gone, just an image in the air In dreams I think of you I don't know what to do with myself Time has let me down She brings broken dreams, fallen stars The endless search for where you are (Sail on, sail on) Fell in love with a country girl, morning sunshine She was up from a nether world, just to bust another soulHer eyes were an endless flame, unholy lady Desire with a special name, made to snatch your soul away, oh! Don't sail away on a crimson tide! Don't leave your heart on the other side! Her eyes are an endless flame Desire with a special name Don't ever fall in love! Don't give your heart away! No never, never fall in love with a country girl!” 8:24:39 PM 4/03/03 “Im with savage on this one......” 8:59:22 PM 4/03/03 Pretty cool..... 8:31:12 AM 4/04/03 “I blame Clinton for everything. the bushes that grew at both ends of his term are perfect.” 7:13:02 PM 4/04/03 “She is a heroine.” 11:36:35 PM 4/04/03 And yes you can blame Willy? “Can you blame Slick Willy for this?? "She shouldn't have been there. I don't have problems with woman in the armed forces but she and the other one were to close to the front, if you ask me. There are plenty of able body men that should have been there in their postions. We don't need our daughters, moms, and wives that close to the action. Its just wrong that this happened. We had some female soliders who got captured and finally released during that war also, so no you can't blame slick willy for this." Ewker 02:31:30 PM 04/03/03 Eucher,, I really don't want to throw stones but Slick Willy is some what to blame for these young woman being put into harms way. http://www.inq7.net/wnw/2003/apr/04/wnw_6-1.htm "..... Women were not allowed to take part in active combat in the last Gulf War in 1991. But former US president Bill Clinton eased restrictions in 1994, opening up 90 percent of army posts to women and allowing them to serve in combat zones, under strict guidelines set down by Congress." I'd imagine there is alot more ink spilled about this but the fact remains; she and the others were to close. It was bad planning. You can take this to the bank, mass changes will happen after this war regarding woman and their place in the combat zone. They don't mix. Again that should have been men in those position. Why??? If anything she is lucky!!!” 8:18:51 AM 4/05/03 “She's a hero. She's also a pawn. A pawn for the government, wanting to put a face on the war and win sympathetic votes backing the war. Don't be so naive as to think that won't happen. A pawn for the media? Sure, I'll give you that one. Media loves a story of winning over immense odds. And tell me, don't you like the story also? Doesn't it warm your heart to hear it? That's why you hear it in the news. You want to hear it, you'll watch the news and read the newspapers to hear about it. You'll defend that gal for all she's been through. Gosh, I wonder why the media covers it??! It would seem to give warm fuzzies all around. You'll write tirades against anyone who can see the story of a hero, yet see beyond it for the propoganda that the story will be used for on all fronts. Yet you sit there, anxiously awaiting the next word on the Jessica Lynch story. And now, I hear about the Iraqui man who also risked it all to help the Americans plan their rescue. I am at least as intrigued by his story. He risked a helluva lot, -- life and his family. Let's hear more there. Sounds like Jessica Lynch owes a lot to this man and his sense of what is right in the world. He's a hero, also.” 8:21:01 AM 4/05/03
