“Anyone tried the bugshirts? Got an alternative? Have you used other mechanical bug protection (like hats with mesh)? http://www.bugshirt.com/diagrams.htm/" target="_blank"> bug clothing ” 10:08:59 AM 4/07/03 “Snow Nymph swears by it. She has a whole bug suit.” 10:10:31 AM 4/07/03 “Is it from the original bug shirt company?” 10:14:02 AM 4/07/03 “I can't decide if those shirts make the people in the photos look like American soldiers donning ABC suits, members of some bizarre cult, or stormtroopers. Still better than showering yourself in deet though, and the price is reasonable.” 10:29:59 AM 4/07/03 “in the canadian tundra, I don't think i would have survived without my bug hat. it wasn't something that had to be worn 24/7, but there were definately days where you had to wear a long sleeve shirt, bug hat, gloves... all for the black flies, and one time for mosquitoes, which usually don't bother me as much. around home, bugs hardly bother me at all... they're there, just not in the quantities that i've seen in the past” 10:33:37 AM 4/07/03 “yeah right, schlong190” 10:40:49 AM 4/07/03 “you have mail, pedxing” 10:50:35 AM 4/07/03 “thanks Twig!” 12:22:39 PM 4/07/03 What I want to know is... “...how do they make clothing small enough for bugs?” 12:23:59 PM 4/07/03 “I saw a neat design while in AK. I forget the manufacturer but the clothing, atleast the top, had solid panels that covered the shoulders and some other areas. The fabric weave was tight enought to keep skeeters at bay even when shouldering a BP. Mesh doesn't work if its on the skin. It had a built in hood and face screen too,,, I believe. Those headnets distort my vision more than I care for. If a smoke bath is not an option alittle DEET on the ears and on some other exposed facial spots normally works for me.” 6:29:53 PM 4/07/03 “I usually go with DEET. I've tried wearing bug netting and I get too warm in it. I might be tempted to try something like that up north during black fly season, though. DEET usually fails me where black flies are concerned.” 7:40:34 PM 4/07/03 “I'll always bring a head net. It has no weight & takes up little room. On a very long canoe portage between Lows Lake & the Oswegatchie, the black flies were murderous in the Adirondacks. I had long pants, long sleeve shirt, gloves & a bug net. The only place that they really got me was my wrists between shirt & glove. I had 2 rings about an inch wide swollen on both hands. Once we got the canoe back in the water & moving, we could paddle away from them.” 8:15:10 PM 4/07/03 “The new Cabelas catalog has some clothing that is made from a material that stops a mosquito bite. Not netting.” 8:16:42 PM 4/07/03 “I saw one of those shirts at a local outfitter, although I don't remember what brand it was. I would like to get one but there is other gear I need more. One of these days I'll get one... maybe. They looked really cool, tho!” 6:23:43 AM 4/08/03 “bugs dont wear shirts!!!!!!!!!!!!” 7:15:24 AM 4/08/03 “Hey Sunny! I located a site for the bug baffler Steiny uses and noticed a different type of bug shirt. It's hard for me to imagine a shirt made of no see-um netting working (can't the bug just land and bite through the holes?): http://www.bugbaffler.com/” target="_blank"> http://www.bugbaffler.com/ ” 7:51:07 AM 4/08/03 “that's what the stuff I have looks like.” 7:52:12 AM 4/08/03 The one I saw... “resembled the first shirt posted than the bugbaffler outfit. The one I saw had a little less fabric than the first but it had a hood and a front pocket/pouch and the shirt folded into the front pocket for easy carrying. It had enough fabric that I thought it might get a little warm but not quite as much as the bugshirt shown. The salesman was telling me that many of the trail crews on Isle Royale use them. Bugs get pretty intense there as several TTer's will tell you. :o) Hey Ped! Think keylime. ;o)” 9:27:53 AM 4/08/03 “Since black fly season starts around here about May 9th and goes to around June 20 (Mother's Day to Father's Day) and the mosquitos are around practically all summer, I think I may have to order one of these. I think I'll get the "Elite" since it has a drawstring in the hood to pull the hood back off your face, the mesh unzips from the face, and has extra pocket for just a few bucks more than the regular. Even with Ben's 100 last year I still got bites. Now, If I could just get the dog to wear my old face/neck/shoulder bug net.” 1:33:40 PM 4/07/04 “Ski that looks hot for Summer use. I know what you mean abou the dogs. I took my Black Lab out last spring during black fly season and she got so bit her eyes swelled shut.” 1:56:10 PM 4/07/04 “Well, it's mostly for the black flies. It doesn't get that warm here until the middle of June, anyway. The mosquitos are more active in the morning and around dusk when it's the cooler part of the day, anyway. I think the bug shirt would be too hot to hike in, but perfect for being outside on the property or walking around in the neighborhood.” 2:12:03 PM 4/07/04 “Ski Pennsy has the Buzz off jacket and likes it. It is all mesh with a zipper in front of your face.” 4:16:33 PM 4/07/04 “Yep, what Lt said. I like my Buzz Off jacket a lot. The only drawback, and it is minor, is that the zipper in front of the face constricts vision a tad. Also, I have to remember to unzip before drinking. Too many folks witnessed that experience on a TT trip. I'm also thinking about getting the Buzz Off pants, where it will be VERY important to unzip before doing something.” 8:25:09 PM 4/07/04 Check This One Out... 8:31:17 PM 4/07/04 “Acccckkkkk.... it's the men in the white coats I've had nightmares about!!!” 8:42:54 PM 4/07/04 “That bug shirt on the STP site looks just like a beekeeper's outfit.” 8:51:41 PM 4/07/04
