How many of you have received an e-mail from this place?

I just got one this morning. I am going to assume that they got the e-mail info from the bio page, and that Matt is NOT selling the info to other sites.

Am I correct in this assumption, Matt? I hope so.

I got one last night.
The email said they got the address from a trip report on a forum. Not sure it was this one as I post on backpacking.net also.

I got one. They said they saw my post on a trail talk forum. Since the forums on most of the boards are called trail talk, it could be any one of 'em.

Greetings Fellow Hiker,

I noticed one of your postings in the Trail Forums and thought you might be interested in what we are doing at LocalHikes. We are trying to create a free resource for hikers around the country to quickly find great hikes near their homes. We are using a network of volunteer hike reporters to post hikes directly on our site. We provide you with our HikeReporter Software and National Geographics TOPO software to make this happen, and you get plenty of recognition on the LocalHikes website for your contribution. We would love to have you as one of our hike reporters.

If you get a chance, take a look at our site www.localhikes.com and if you have some interest in becoming a hike reporter, you can get more info by going to http://www.localhikes.com/reporter.asp .

If you have any questions, feel free to email.

Enjoy The Outdoors,

Lawrence Knight

I see that we all have our email addresses in our profile - so they could easily glean the names from our posts. I've been getting increased junk mail... I getting tempted to stop including that address in my profile.

Yah I got it too. I can't remember what address I used at "the other site" but probably the same as the one I use here. Plus I've used that address on an Alabama site as well.

I got the same mail also.

Simple solution that works for me: I have a yahoo email address posted here. I get all sorts of junk mail on that one, and that's okay since it's not my primary email. I refuse to post my primary email anywhere and never use it for registering on any website. I always use my yahoo for that.

I've done this for years and its kept my primary email address 100% spam free.

This is the reason I didn't use to include my email in my profile. I don't really want that account to become all spammed up like my hotmail account. Maybe I should send them a link to my 'homepage'.

Rest assured, I will never sell my contact list to anyone. I think that is one of the sleaziest things to do.

I've usually done that too, but for hiking sites I succumbed and posted my real address.

Something that I like to do when registering at a website is to use a fake name. So it's easy to know it's spam when I get email for "Navarro Youmindi" or "Iwon Tellyu".

I got one and felt all special. Good trail reviews take time and energy that I don't feel like contributing to other folks' websites - particularly when they are trying to sell stuff on the site.

Same here, Big Coop. I got snail mail asking me to submit essays about my favorite places and why they are so special. And then they'll sell it, of course.

This is why I don't have my email address posted in my profile. Our (small) company had all of our email addresses posted on our web site for a while, so now I delete about 30 or so spam emails every morning, lots more on Monday mornings. My favorite spam today arrived with the subject line, "Becky the farmgirl." No, I didn't open it....
