man my favorite coyote-listening spot was ruined this weekend by hoardes of damn dirty humans. there were at least twenty frigging backpackers/canoers in an area no more than an acre. really annoyed me.

I've seem more Buffalo in the Badlands than in Custer and Wind Cave NP together.
I pulled up next to onein the truck while driving throught Badlands NP and couldn't believe the size. They are HUGE!! His eyes were higher up then the top of the truck. I bet he weighed 700 pounds.

For that photo I took, I was behind the Jeep hood, using big ole zoom lens.

You see one on the side of the road just standing there and see what you do.
It just seemed like a good idea at the time.

He just looked at me and said, "What the f**k do you want?"

you climbed all the way to the top? kewl! i didnt know you were that much into climbing. do you remember what the route was rated? im betting around a 5.10? memorial day last year, i went to new river gorge and top-roped a 5.8 and a 5.10, but didnt finish two of the 5.9's i started. one because i had to do a traverse with no footholds (and i cant smear worth a damn), and the other one because i got my foot caught in a crack, and i expended so much energy getting it out i was too tired to go on.

i was visiting my parents today, and they informed me that we did indeed visit the badlands on a trip when i was a teen. i remember scrambling on some rocks, but i didnt remember that it was the badlands until they told me.

I forget the name of the route we did. It was one of the easy ones. Not having climbed out there before we didn't want anything too hard. After that we climbed for about a week in the Black Hills. That was some of the best climbing routes I've ever done!
walkindude

Oh yeah, one thing about all the Devils Tower routes. What ever the guide book says, add one more number of dificulty. A 9 is pretty much a 10a. A 10b is an 11b.
We thought our route seemed tougher than it was actually rated. Everybody else climbing out there said the same thing.

The top is about the size of a football field and it's pretty burly looking. The weeds on top are about like wire. The bugs are bad too. It's VERY hard finding the rap bolts to get back down. Lucky for us, another group came up another route and showed us where they were. We'd have never found them.

In summerizing, It was cool to have done it but it wasn't that fun.
