im not a bush fan, but let me play devils advocate here: what if we left saddam alone, and he (or his son) eventually became a world-class menace. its not inconceivable. RIGHT NOW, its a relative cakewalk. why wait until iraq is a true threat to peace? why take that chance? should we do like we did in ww I and II and let germany run roughshod over western europe for a couple of years before getting involved? how many lives could have been saved had we intervened sooner? who knows? iraq may never have turned into a threat, and we are wasting lives with this war. then again, we couldve had wwIII on our hands. THATS the premise of this war.

Thing is 2scoops: almost no one was suggesting leaving Saddam alone... unlike Hitler, Saddam had been defeated, sanctioned, and at least partially disarmed. Most of his country was a "no fly zone" for his military and his military installations were often bombed.

People kept talking like keeping all this up - along with tightened and enhanced inspections was "appeasement."

Saddam was rotten, disgusting and malicious - no doubt, and certainly his ambitions should not and would not be allowed to go unchecked.

Hi,

My name is Tarp Rat...

I have been on this board since it began... I started many a thread and helped many people with choosing the right gear (TNF). And I left the board in 2001 because many of the threads became racist after 9-11 and I felt that I no longer wanted to associate with these people. I recently came back and started to voice my opinions about the current crisis in Iraq. I know many people disagree with me, and that's fine! However, I should be allowed to state my views just as everyone else. I was recently banned from the board, my IP disabled. I was told this was because of my off-topic posting, but this is a false claim because the threads I was posting to were completely off topic and unrelated to backpacking in the first place. I just wanted to say that this is unfair. Have a nice day… and let the games begin!

First How many hundreds of thousands of people must one (saddam) kill before he would be considered a true threat? Then one would have to wonder why we are not in Somalia (again) and other countries that are murdering their citizens?

I thought Bush was alright but I lost all respect for President Bush when he would not watch the POW tape from Arab TV. He sent them over there he should be able to face what happened! Cowardly!

The inspectors were back this year and Germany, France, Russia and many other countries were calling for tightening the inspections up and adding more inspectors.

The point is that it is ludicrous to think that many people were advocating to leave Saddam on his own.

"The people of Iraq have lived in this nightmare
world for more than two decades. It is understandable that fear
and distrust run deep. ... I give this pledge to the citizens
of Iraq: We're coming with a mighty force to end the reign of
your oppressors. We are coming to bring you food and medicine
and a better life. And we are coming, and we will not stop,
we will not relent until your country is free."

"By our actions, we serve a great and just cause: We will remove
weapons of mass destruction from the hands of mass murderers.
Free nations will not sit and wait, leaving enemies free to plot
another September the 11th, this time, perhaps with chemical or
biological or nuclear terror. And by defending our own security,
we are freeing the people of Iraq from one of the cruelest regimes
on Earth. ... The objectives we've set in this war are worthy
of America, worthy of all the acts of heroism and generosity
that have come before. Once again, we are applying the power
of our country to ensure our security and to serve the cause
of justice. ...May God bless our country and all who defend
her. Semper fi." --President George Bush

I'm just curious...if this were about oil, why didn't we attack Venezuela or Mexico? They're closer to home and both produce more oil (over 1 million barrels more yearly) than Iraq.
Does this mean we are going to attack Norway next? They have lots of oil.

I hate posting about politics but here it goes anyways:

I have a very liberal friend who has a bumper sticker that says "No one is free while others are oppressed", funny how he can change his tune so quickly.

Regarding Bush's pro-business policy, pro business keeps food on the tables, i.e., caring about business is caring about people.

Regarding Bush's Environmental strategies, I used to be somewhat liberal minded when it came to the environment, but the propaganda and tactics used by environmental groups has crossed the line and I'll no longer support the majority of them. I guess that's not so much about Bush's policies but more about why I'm anti green.

Regarding Halliburton, funny, there were only 3 companies bidding, all three from Texas and all three with ties to Bush, whadaya gonna do?

Bush received much criticism for not being proactive in stopping the 9/11 attack, now he's proactive, damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Let's face it, people are going to hate Bush regardless of what he does just like they hated his father and just like they hated Reagan. Part of being a Republican president is knowing you'll be the most hated person in the U.S. I've heard for many years that left leaning people were people of tolerance...bull stuff!

While I didn't vote for Bush, I do support him, my own political beliefs are more aligned with a Libertarian platform. I do support peoples right of dissent but often question there reasons. It's funny how we pay more attention to what Hollywood or the Record Industry has to say about politics than anyone else. Half of the entertainers are irresponsible waste cases who take too many drugs, drink too much, cheat on there spouses and assault reporters yet they know when the camera is on and act like there conscientious citizens.

Well, we've had a man who grew up 20 miles from here killed now in Iraq. The war hits home.

From the Sunday Des Moines Register:

Marine Staff Sgt. Jeffery Edward Bohr, 39, a native of Ossian, was identified Saturday as the one Marine killed in a vicious seven-hour battle near a mosque in Baghdad last week.

Bohr was a member of the 1st Battalion, 5th Regiment, Alpha Company from Camp Pendleton, Calif., that fought pro-Saddam Hussein forces Thursday at the Imam Mosque northwest of Baghdad's city center, U.S. military officials said.

Bohr's father, Edward Bohr of Ossian, said military officials notified him of his son's death Thursday. The family and military kept the information private until Jeffery Bohr's wife, Laurie, a native of Cedar Rapids, could be reached with the news. Laurie Bohr was driving to Iowa from Camp Pendleton and didn't arrive until late Saturday.

Jeffery and Laurie Bohr have no children, Edward Bohr said.

The news of his son's death was difficult to take, but Edward Bohr said that he was proud of everything his son had accomplished.

Jeffery Bohr began his military career in the Army, his father said. He finished boot camp during the summer between 11th and 12th grades of high school. He spent three or four years in the Army, then came home, couldn't find work and joined the Marines.

The younger Bohr fought in Panama and the Persian Gulf War. He spent the last four years as an instructor at Camp Pendleton and planned to retire from the military in about two years, his father said.

The last time Edward Bohr saw his son was the summer of 2002, when Jeffrey spent a couple of weeks in Ossian.

Neighbors and friends have turned out with condolences and more. "I have so much food, I don't know how I'm going to eat it all," Edward Bohr said.

Edward Bohr said funeral plans would have to wait "until we hear from the military when Jeffery's body will be brought back home."

Bohr's mother, Janet Bohr of Lansing, could not be reached for comment.

Jeffery Bohr was one of five brothers. Richard, of Minneapolis, has spent 19 years in the Army and Army Reserve. He was at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., and had been scheduled to be deployed May 3 for duty in Iraq.

Capt. Frank Thorp, a U.S. Central Command spokesman, told The Associated Press last week that Jeffery Bohr's unit was acting on information that regime leaders were organizing a meeting in the area. During the operation, Thorp said, Marines were shot at from the mosque compound. Reports said as many as 35 Marines were wounded.

2scoops, the reason you post on here is to influence people's opinion's. me pointing out the fact that you are in the VAST minority is my way of influencing people's opinions. i want people to remember that it's mainly the extreme left wing of the world that still has problems with this whole mess. like dunk said(great post dunk) you will hate bush no matter what. you will not give him credit for anything....no matter what. you , therefore, are an extremist with no real interest in truth, only rhetorical mud slinging and devisive scare tactics. it's all you got left i rekon. enjoy your self depricating misery......

I have to play devil's advocate with you a little, Strat. First of all, Bush does beleieve what he says. That's part of what scares me about him. I heard him say that he believes he was ordained by God to carry out this mission he is on. I have a problem with religious zealotry, no matter which side of denomination it comes from. Secondly, the side that is not in power will always be the loudest, most whiney and often the most negative sounding in their public views. That is just the nature of the beast. Look at the way the Repubs behaved during the Clinton years. They fought this guy with a vengeance, tooth and nail for almost 8 years. They stalled congress as much as anyone ever has and whined about everything under the sun. Just my 2 cents...

All our politicians are #&%!$ for the most part. Look how they get elected, and look who they bow to when important issues are on the line:

Republicans - elected through a kiss a$$ elitist system. In order for them to be a candidate, they have to whore themselves out to rich people, or be rich themselves.

Democrats - elected by a defaultist popularity system. In order for them to be candidates, they have to agree with the polarized liberal groups who happen to vote, but don't represent the majority views of this country at all.

Republicans bow to corporations and ideals that make the rich richer (capitalists).

Democrats bow to special intrest groups (too many to list) that want the power that money buys.

Who gets screwed.... us, and what do we do about it...... nothing. This is why we haven't had a decent presdiential candidate since Reagan (although McCain would have been a kick ass president).

In conclusion, let's start electing folks with common sense, who want to actually represent their district, regardless of their personal views on issues. Lets put people in office that want to seperate church and state, are strong enough to put special interest groups in perspective to what the people actually want, and seek office not for power, but because they love thier country, and want to represent thier peers.

HAHA! All he needs now is a good speech reader!

Bush strikes me as more of a regular guy the likes we haven’t seen sense Jimmy Carter. When he’s giving a speech and he reaches a point in the speech when he has to talk tough and make a powerful threat he gets this little twinkle in his eye and looks like he’s fighting back a smirk…just like I would have. I knew this guy was truly one of us when he made the statement about not shooting a $10 mil missile into a tent or camel’s butt. He ain’t perfect but I do like him.

There are parts of GB that I don't care for, but who would be perfect? Like they say, if he didn't take out SH, and another 9/11 happened on his watch, he would be vilified by the Dems for not acting. If he does take out SH, a few 100 US soldiers die for sure, and a few hundred thousand US citizens are saved MAYBE (we'll never know for sure).

Just wonder what Gore would have done had he been president, and I suspect he would still be conducting studies, negotiating, taking surveys, or kowtowing to the iimpotent UN. I think Bush is doing what he thinks is right, regardless of the polls, and I think he has a strong urge to get out of Iraq when he can. If he is thinking about polls and reelection, he is thinking that in the long run this will play out well, for humanity as well as for the Republicans and Bush himself.
