I've got a Tikka which I love, but I also like to carry a light that is a bit more powerful. Rather than buy one of the new combination headlamps I thought about buying one of those little 2xAAA or AA fliashlights and attaching it to the tikka headband, which I think would give me something versatile and very lightweight. Anyone suggest the most powerful small and light flashlight to use for this?

Here is one, but it gets only two hours burn time:
Underwater Kinetics

I also have one of their four AA lights, which is almost as powerful as a 6-cell mag lite.

that looks pretty good, thanks Geo. I'm not too concerned about burn time as I figure virtaully all my use will come from the tikka, just having the power flashlight to be used occasionally.

The little ones weigh next to nothing. The 4-AA ones are not very heavy either.

The LED flashlights really do not do well in my estimation.

Use Lithium AA batteries, they weigh less and last longer, although you will pay more for them.

I was thinking of using a AA maglite and powering it with lithiums. Just wondered if there was something better out there.

I made my dad wear my headlamp while he was taking my sink apart this weekend. Thought it was pretty cool!

My flash light has many uses:
For light I use my white-match flash light. Its very light and I built it my self. Dirrections are as follows:

Take 10 oz of white gas and poor onto tinder near kindiling near trees (aka the forrest).
STEP 2
Strike Match
STEP 3
Drop Match
---

you now have a 30 acre flashlight that cost you nearly nothing, and you don't have to pack it out.

Be on the lookout for a Pelican MityLite (could also be black, orange, blue or white). It's like a small Mag-Lite, only plastic... 2 AAA's, 1.75 gms (with batteries) throws a very nice little beam --- but only for 2 hours, running continuously with a xenon bulb (according to the company).

They say you can't use them for SCUBA, but I think they're pretty much air-tight. On one trip, I changed batteries at the bottom of the Grand Canyon, then I had to change them again in the Sierra at about 9000 ft. I was unscrewing the flashlight and POW! That was Some difference in air pressure!

Yeah, I'd say they're pretty much air-tight, <G>

Pelican

(then click on 'Small Flashlights'... they have a couple of AA models, too (they last 3 hours))

Hmmm. Looks like REI carries 6 different Pelican flashlights... but they're all the larger ones. I think many regular sporting goods stores sell them, tho'.

I really like the AA mini-mag lights with duracells. I use lithium in the very cold weather. I also have a PAL light (9v battery) for it's long life, multiple intensities & strobe.

I use a tikka for camp chores and a princeton tech blast flashlight when I need to spotlight something, usually wayward Scouts or raccoons.

Underwater Kinetics makes one almost like the Pelican. UK uses xenon bulbs as well, which is why the burn time is short.

The problem with Mini Mags, as I see it, are twofold: weight and dim bulbs compared to the xenon UKs or Pelicans. The AAA UKs put out more light than the heavier Mini Mags. That said, I have a few Mini Mags that I've had for years, and they are quite dependable. I have not thrown them out; I'm keeping them for backup.

I still have a few single-AAA Mag-Lites scattered around. They put out just enough light to help find a bigger flashlight, LOL.

I'd like to trade them in for a small handful of Photon 3 Covert doodads... along with Krill Light or two....

Just another $100 worth of goodies!

I like my Pelican light it is a shorter version than the one pictured. The bateries are side by side. It also has a clip that allows my to clip it to my hat brim, pseudo headlight. Batteries don't last that long but it is bright enough to find out what made that noise.

That Pelican sounds like the UK lite that I linked to early on in this thread. I wonder if they're made by the same company. Gotto go trolling through the links.

Hmmm, not the same, but darned close in terms of the specs.

Yes, quite similar... just a side-by-side configuration. I see they also make a 2-AAA penlight (optional red LED... hmmm...).

I've got to do some more SCUBA one of these days. Some of the BP trips I've been on, it SEEMED like I was underwater at least part of the time, LOL

Tell me a little more about the Photon 3 Covert, or throw a link at me.

I love the photon light. Small/light/bright. My Scout Troop is selling them as a fundraiser for a big backpack trip next year (Philmont). Everyone that has bought has nothing but good to say about them.

Cool Deal.

When I go for Flashlight Overkill, I take the next larger Pelican that also has a xenon bulb, but with 2 C-cells. That is One Bright Little Sucker! It's definitely brighter than the old 3 D-cell Mag-lite.

I remember when I first got it, there was a warning sticker on the side saying to NEVER shine it in anyone's eyes... permanent damage could result.
