Questions about Digital Cameras

The body is a little dinged up, like the guy said, and it had a sticky patch on it that I cleaned off with some alcohol no problem. But the lens appears to be fine, and and zooms no problem.

“Well, I'm still enjoying the camera. But it went through its first set of batteries by yesterday. Fortunately they are rechargable NiMH's. I bought two sets so I would always have a charged set waiting to pop into the camera, right?

Wrong. One of the batteries I bought is bad. This sucks, because you're supposed to use them in matched sets so that they're all delivering the same current and voltage, approximately. So I have 3 batteries charged up and useless. I can use them in other stuff, of course, but it still sucks, and now I have to buy another set of four. Fortunately, the charger I bought only takes about 6 hours to charge up four batteries.

Oh, they are Sunpak batteries, by the way. I looked around on their website for Warranty info, they didn't even admit they made AA NiMH batteries. I think the next set I get will be Everready or something like that. They might have a lower mAh rating, but I bet they will all work.”

“Try the 15 minute charging system from Ray-o-vac. It really does take just a few minutes. I don't even have a second set of batts yet. I have a 64 mg card that takes 121 pics at better quality and the batteries are only half used! I can pop in my 16 mg card and take another 29 pics for 150 total. They last for a couple of days on one charge so why buy a second set. It also comes with 12 volt car charger to plug into your cig lighter.”

“I think this was mentioned before, but I'm really happy with my MAHA POWEREX MH-C204F & PowerEx batteries . I'm not sure if they will work in your charger though. Their batteries have a one year warrenty.

Sounds like your having a good time with you new camera. In another 10 or 20 years you wont even remember the battery thing ;-)

mtnsteve - I can't imagine why those wouldn't work with my Sunpak charger. My backup plan is high-end alkaline batteries too...regular Duracells are 2850mAh, even the best AA NiMH's are only 2400mAh.”

“Personally I wouldn't geta big zoom lens over 7x without image stabilization because camera shake at that magnification range makes capturing good images without a tripod hard to do. This leaves the Panasonic FZ cameras (FZ1/FZ2/FZ3 FZ10/FZ15/FZ20), the Olympus CZ2100, and the Canon S1-IS. The Image stabilized Leica lens is be far and away the best lens of the three. You can pick up the FZ15 which is a 4mp for about $450 and the FZ10 for about $400. Just one guy's camera opinion...”

I did a lot of research about a month ago when I purchased a camera for my father. I ended up getting the 4MP Canon A85 and a 512 MB memory card. If you don't want to spend more than $400 altogether, that might be a better choice for you.

Both have a low light illuminator, a nice fast lens, powers up really fast and uses AA batteries.”

I have a DX-6440, it's about a year old. It developed a problem w the zoom, long story short I sent it back they repaired at N/C, kept me abreast of status the whole time they had it (only about a week), I recieved emails... "we have recieved your camera", then "On technician's desk...." then, "we shipped your camera back today..."

Anyway, very good service, I'm guessing you probably can't go wrong w any of the leading co's, but have to say I'm pleasantly surprised any time I get good servce from anyone these days! Kodak gets my vote in that regard.”

“don't like sony because they use the sony memory stick. no other camera that I know off uses the memory stick, so if you want to save money on your next camera you would have to buy another sony.

That was the reason why I choose Canon instead of sony. Sony does have a very small camera out, that also has a very large LCD screen. Zoom still sucks on that one too though.”

“I hear ya Gemini on the memory stick issue. I have a Sony mini DV camcorder as well as the still camera which also uses the stick. That was the only reason I got the camera.”

“I had an HP digital camera, the quality wasn't very great and it was a 5 MP. I would not buy a 3 MP!

I've heard similar things about Kodak, the quality of the image just isn't there.

If you want a digital camera I'd go with Cannon or Olympus.”

“Between the two, I'd go with the HP. 3x optical zoom is much better than 3x digital. Basically all digital zoom does is crop your image, which you can do after you download your images to your computer.”

A 3mp will give similar resolution to a 35mm point and shoot with a standard 50mm lens.
Pretty good for 5x7 prints but getting blurred in an 8x10 enlargement.

I have a Kodak Cx4230. 3x optical, 2mp for hiking. Fits in a shirt pocket and uses AA batteries. OK as a snapshot camera, never going to produce posters though.”

“Bearcrossing, I disagree with you on the Kodak cameras. I have had 2 of there digital cameras and both take great pictures. My current Kodak camera can have prints made up to 20" x 30".

“My olympus camedia c-5050 I had was great. I sold it for a smaller canon. Not too happy with my canon powershot S500 elph, it's small, but the lack of quality is def. there. (both 5 megapixel)

I don't like sony because of the memory stick. Once you buy sony you'll have to buy another sony if you don't want to spend more money on memory.
