No problem.

I would really look at that Fuji. I know it is close to what you want to spend. You will not find that price anywhere.

I'd go with an Olympus or Canon, 3-6 megapixels, depending on what you want to do the with photos. HP equipment sucks, unless its printers or scanners.

Try the Fugi S3000, similar features to the A330,but 6x optical zoom, lens hood, and optional zoom and wide angle lenses. the hood takes 55mm filters too.Got mine just before Christmas for $150 at Circuit City.Check out the write up at steves, and compare features to price.

I vote for Olympus
I got a 4.1 mp.... wouldn't get anything with less than 4 if you want any quality.

these were taken with it...

Just my 2 cents...

ok. i think finally settled on this guy:

http://www.steves-digicams.com/2003_reviews/stylus300.html

an olympus stylus 300 weatherproof (3 MP) for 150.

i like the fuji finepix 4MP for 10 bucks less also, but i'm thinking the weatherproofing overides the extra 1 MP.

my printer is an HP 1200 series.

so if i buy some photo paper and print out an 8x10 picture at 4800x1200 dpi, will it have regular film picture quality?

At 300 dpi, you'd need a file 2400 x 3000 pixels. Most labs request 300 dpi for photographic quality.

Sacco, I can't help with the camera decision except to say don't get fooled by the term "weatherproof". This is a marketing term. It's not waterproof. Weatherproof really doesn't hold up to it supposed definition. I mean, what the heck is weatherproof? Heck, a cardbox is weatherproof.

that is a very good point rockman. i'm putting a lot of faith in steve's digicam's review.

I don't think the maker is misleading anyone about the camera's durablity or water resistance. The manufacturer does not claim the camera to be "waterproof", nor do they equate "weatherproof" to "waterproof". The review page clearly states that it protects against "water splashed from any direction", but makes no claim about ability to survive submersion (typical of "waterproof").

Let us know if you make the purchase, Sacco. I'm looking for a more-durable digicam myself and this was recommended to me, as well.

I am looking at a used Canon Digital Rebel 300D camera 6.3 MP I think. It comes with a 18mm-55mm lens. It still has a one yr warranty on it. Some of the extras include a 70mm-300mm lens, remote shutter release and battery grip. The person selling it hasn't decided what they want to seel it for. I have no clue as to what it cost. Any ideas on what you would pay for this camera with extras

I believe just the kit (body and lense) is about $900 brand new.

My digital camera really sucks. I point it at some view I think is cool, and the pic comes out all fuzzy & out of focus.

Here's what I'd do if I were you. Go hiking with people like WindWalker, Buck, WannaBP, HiknMike, & the rest of the crowd... you know who they are... then, at the end of your trip, you say to them "Gee, my batteries were dead, Can I have a copy of your pic's?". They will send you copies and you then will have your own album of your trip, but without all the hassle!

Ewker....That's the camera I'm using!

The Rebel XT (350D)has 8 Megapixels and sells for $999 with the kit lens(18-55)...so the 6.3 that use to sell for that price should be much cheaper...more like the price S.S. posted.

A 75-300 lens is less than $200 new...
75-300mm

Canon remote shutter release is $29 on e-bay.

Not sure what the battery grip runs...I never saw a need for one....you can take 300-600 photos on a single charge of the battery.

They probably have $1500+ invested in the package...but it's used. SLR prices don't seem to dive as rapidly as the point and shoots.

I use an Olympus 3 megapixel. With a 128 meg chip I can store over 100 pics. I can even take short video clips with sound but that eats up the memory. I like my mini-tripod, it's about 6" long. I can switch off the lcd display and use the optical viewfinder only to conserve battery power. With accessories, I spent about $800, bought it on Amazon. I have not had any problems with image quality. This is my 2nd digital camera, my first was like wander said, always fuzzy pics, but it was about 0.3 megapixels!

I'll second the recommendation from WindWalker. I've been using the D-Reb for about 6 months and absolutely love it. I bought mine without the lens and got a good deal on the kit lense and a 100mm-300mm lens...thanks WW! :)

I'd expect to pay about $1000 for that set-up. Any idea how big a CompactFlash card he has?

Nice try wanderer!!

Hey Windwalker, would you even think about buying a refurbished Canon EOS Rebel? It still has the normal warranty and accessories like a new one does.

I’m wanting to trade up now. Digis are like computers; easy to get caught behind the tech curve. When I bought my little Sony 2.0 MP I paid $225 for it. For the same price I can get a 3.1 MP with all the bells and whistles for the same price and for just an extra $75 or so I can go 4.0 MP. They even have a Canon 3.0 with changeable lens for under $300 that is reviewed as being the shiznit.[sigh]

Too bad I couldn’t even get but about $50 for the 2.0 to help with costs.

Just be careful some of those NY camera dealers are really high pressure....some of the sites will make you call in to confirm your order so they can try to sell you a $1,000 worth of accessories to go with your $600 camera ;) I had one hang up on me because I wouldn't buy anything else.

Ewkster, that looks like a fair price to me. I haven't been following the prices of the original Digital Rebel since the "XT" came out, but the price looked good and that camera will kick out some fantastic shots for you and the versatility of a slr camera and all the filters and various lenses you can use with it will be a wonderful thing indeed. But if you do buy it, please **CONSULT WITH YOUR WIFE FIRST**.

I too have a question for Buck & Windwalker..hope you do not mind me asking..but I am very confused about this.

There are two different digital cameras I am looking at buying
One has 4MP with a 4xoptical zoom..the other one has 5MP with a 3xoptical zoom.

I have heard that it is important to have a good optical zoom and that a 4 would be better than a 3.....I have no idea if this is so

Any suggestions?
Thank you both

Optical zoom is what you want....the more you have the more versitile your camera will be. There are a few out there with a 10x optical zoom. The Lumix by Panasonic has a 10x image stabalized Leica lens...pretty cool for a point and shoot :)

Hi madeintahoe! Sidenote: I was just on Webshots searching various wilderness places which I do now and then to look for updated pics of cool places, and I searched "Pioneer Basin" and your pics were all over the place, even on the first page! Again, fantastic shots! Which peak was that "bearpaw" image on? I've never noticed it before and it's really cool!

Okay, regarding optical zooms... obviously a 4x would be more zoomy than a 3x. Optical zooms are great quality. Deciding between 4mp with 4x and 5mp with 3x would depend on what you prefer... the ability to zoom closer to subjects or the ability to enlarge your photos larger (relatively speaking). But let me say this, 4mp will give you a pretty big enlargement. But if the 5mp is a later camera the chip may be of better quality because it's not just all about megapixels.

With the quality of photos you take and the great "eye" you have (my, what lovely eyes you have) you might look into biting the el bulleto and getting a Digi Rebel or something. But the Canon Powershots or those kinds of point-n-shoot models are pretty sweet too, it's just tougher to use filters (GNDs and polarizers, etc.) and you are "stuck" with the built in zoom range unless you get an adaptar. But the range from the zooms are probably within what you'd normally shoot the majority of the time anyway. As you know, PCT Pete is taking fantastic photos with his little point-n-shoot digital Canon-ma-job.

I got to do some work with Canon's new EOS with the full size sensor. I think street price on this camera body alone is around $8000. It is an awesome camera, but I have to say, I just wasn't that impressed with the quality of the image for the price. The one thing that scares me about purchasing a digital camera is that technology progresses so fast your investment is obsolete before you get a return on it. I have film cameras that are 20 years old and worth more now than the day they were purchased. Even my Nikon F5 is still worth most of what I paid for it. You just can't say that about any digital camera more than two years old.

That being said, I think if I do add an SLR body to my collection, it would probably be the Kodak DCS PRO SLRn. Unless Nikon finally gets smart and adds a body with a full size sensor to their line.
