Will work for food...
K, peeps - put me to work!

It's looking like I'll be late June/early July getting on the road this summer.

My first stop will be Om's place. She has a Florida room to complete. I haven't seen her place, but I would suspect I could complete the work in a few days. While I'm there, I'd like to explore the river. So... there's one week.

I'll head north from there to...
where?

Who's next?

Dang!
I was ready to hunt-up my edible body paints.

Painting's really not my forte. Stripping? Even less.
(Actually, I always wanted to be a painter, but they found out my parents were married - hehehee)

Yeah, strip the floors before sanding. The varnish will clog the paper grit of the floor sander. My ID bro and I did a hardwood floor redo a few years ago. It wasn't necessarily fun, but it was bucks...

Ummmmm! Yueng Ling!(sp?)
I discovered YL while there in '99. I had some in FL last summer - the barkeep said they bought a brewery in Tampa. Mebbe it'll get to GA someday.

Yuengling has made it to Alabama. I had some 2 weeks ago in a Mellow Mushroom restaurant in B'ham. I also had some in a bar in Pensacola in late Feb (It was Trader John's in P'cola.)

I had a couple of Yuengling drafts with lunch today. The Lager and Black and Tan are the best. There are better beers to be had, but not at the price. It's way better than other domestic brands, and totally better than Beer-ade (Bud and Bud Lite).

My skill levels, in descending order:

Carpentry - I'm not the best, but I'm the best I've ever seen.

Electrical - I'm not the best, but I'll do til they get here.

Painting - One word: "booze".

Plumbing - Pretty simple, really:
hot on the left, cold on the right, and $#!+ don't run uphill.

Masonry - I've dabbled extensively.

HVAC - Barely registers on the radar.

Cake walk. It just so happens that my students produce The World's Best Built Portable Storage Buildings. Plus, I've built several over the years. One was 10x12 built on an existing slab that was 9" out of level from one corner to it's opposite. The top plate was oh so level when I finished, tho.

gojo - nothing big (I don't think), basically spiffin' and repairs so I can sell my house. I can send you a list of "what I thinks" if you're interested. I'd love to meet 'belle and gizmo.

I was thinking of putting a yurt on my new place, but that may change. Could use a storage shed for my new place, maybe.

I live about an hour from the coast, 1.5-3+ hours from "good" hiking and backpacking, but there are short local trails within 30 miles. ~2 hours from Mt Washington and Canada.

Gojo, what are your rates? I have a whole house that needs to be trimmed out, plus thirteen windows. Birch says he wants to do it, but I know if someone else did it reasonable, he'd probably rejoice and have NO problems finding something else to do with his time.

Man, I couldn't be any more backed up if ate five pounds of cheese! This weekend I have to draw up plans for a grape arbor over the deck, buy the materials, buy a new tiller for the garden I have yet to touch this year, buy a new mower and mow the grass that is going to seed because the rain has kept me from it, put up the pool, and this is on top of any last minute "ideas" the lovely wife might come up with.

Sass -
I haven't subbed trim work for a long time. I've done plenty of (relative) late, but as part of the whole package, ie, remodeling.

How extensive are you talking for windows? Will it include stool, stop, mull, casing, etc, ie, all wood, prehung double-sash units? Or will it be as simple as a stool and casing, ie, metal tack-to-the-outside-wall units?

Gee. The terminology escapes me...

Trim...
Basic baseboard and casing? Two or three piece baseboard?

Crown moulding?

Stairs?

I subbed trim for a builder in the mid 80's. Seems I remember something like $10.00 per room for base, and $10.00 per unit hanging doors and trimming windows. Closet shelves pretty cheap, cept linen and pantrys. Walk-ins could get pretty elaborate, too.

*gojo pulls the calculator up on the computer screen and begins to adjust for inflation. gojo likes what he's seeing!* hehehee!

I've done lots of trim by the hour - working for the man.

BTW -
I was planning to travel kinda light in the tools, ie, no miter saw...

I'm gonna try to keep it to one kinda big tool bag, circular saw, ext. cord, level, etc... Nothing fancy.

But like I say:
every tool I need to build a house, I can carry in one trip from the truck.

Thing is, we have a brand spankin' new Delta mitre saw, just waiting for someone...also have a bench saw, and all the necessary tools. Really lacking on the motivation and time though. =)

The windows are hung, just need sills and trim around the insides, They aren't wood so I guess tack to the inside type job. Floor molding and ceiling molding are needed in two rooms. One is around 12x20, other 12x16. Nothin' fancy. Maybe wouldn't even be worth the trip way up here for ya. And it all depends on price. I'll admit...I'm tight. =) Email me if yer interested in giving an approximate quote. I know MI is a long way from FLA, so my feelings won't be hurt if it's not something you even wanna think about.

I like puttering around. Build sheds, 2 story clubhouses, playtoys & rooms. Replace windows, doors, floors & ceramic tile. Put down a hardwood floor last year but work long hours at my reg job. Didn't want to rent a nailer or sander because I didn't know when I could use it. Ended up drilling & setting flooring nails by hand & sanding with a 5" orbital. Took a while, but came out nice. Some year I'll do the moulding. Can't decide between stained oak or painted pine. Run wiring, add outlets & switches everywhere. Don't like building septic & drywell systems but love backhoes. Dug up my whole backyard last year, so now I have to pick up rocks & plant grass. Like playing with a cement mixer too. Finished my back walk & halfway thru my front walkway. Have faucets everywhere. In the country you kinda have to become self sufficient.

GOJO!!

When ya coming to MI? My kitchen sink still isn't installed - the hole got cut a bit too big. I want to use my brand new kitchen!

I need some bi-fold doors installed, my garage door opener is broken, and there's something wrong with the dryer vent. Its attached (as far as I can tell) but it still blows hot air up at me.

HELP!!! :)

Its not that. It just got hooked up again after the kitchen remodel, and I vacuumed it out when it was removed, so I guess somethings not tight. I'll pull out the dryer and get back in there to figure it out.

Man, just got back from Homo Depot. I'm like that guy that takes off running away from his wife as soon as he gets in Curcit City. Walked out $750 poorer but got a pimp new tiller, a rear bagging mower, and all the lumber for my grape arbor over the deck. I was out mowing the grass with my new shiny mower just gruntin' away with pride!

I did check out the dryer vent again last night. It pulls off the back of the dryer very easily, so I guess that's what the problem is. But there's no room to clamp it. Can I use duct tape on it??
smiley girl
6:59:47 AM

smilely girl
I don't think you want to use duct tape. A clamp should have come with the dryer (takes next to no room). If not, then there's some blockage between the dryer and the outside vent. Perhaps the 'flap' outside isn't opening. I've had problems with the cheap 'door' on the outside vent that is supposed to open and close with use, sometimes they don't open when you turn the dryer on, so the pressure forces the tube off the end of the dryer. Long way around to say to check the exit route.

Okay, peeps - I'm just now developing my post-June 4th itenerary. It's looking like It'll be at least mid-July before I hit the road. That's a long time in terms of "pressing" projects.

smiley, smiley, smiley - where'd me and your mama go wrong, child? Duct tape (aka "Alabama chrome") can be used for absolutely anything.

It can be used on your vent pipe as long as it half-laps both the pipe and the metal sleeve(?) over which the pipe slides. But why duct tape? (sticky residue - ew!). Go to the hdwe store and get a springy wire ring thingy, or a 4"+ diameter hose clamp, or whatever they have specifically for that purpose.

Oh. I just re-read your post...
If there's not space for clampage, how can duct tape work? I'm confused... or mebbe there's something your not telling us.
Come clean!

5/14/03

dammit, do i have to take pics and post them??

the screw on the clamp is the problem, it buts up against the back of the dryer and makes the flexible tube pop off. as i was pulling the dryer back from the wall, it popped off.

duct tape is much more pliable (obviously) and can fit in all the crevices. my dad was worried that the tape would melt and it wouldn't be a good long term solution.

i'm sure my explanation didn't help any. just like there's no way i could explain that the clips for the sink don't have room to clip to the counter.

If you find a handyman you may have to buy the materials up front but don't pay him for all of the labor until the work is done to your satisfaction.
