I've got one and it's bombproof

I've got the old school 5800, before they switched to the new look. It's the exact same except for one more pocket and a slightly different top lid.

The pack is fairly heavy, but it holds loads like none other, so you won't feel the weight that much. The polycarb stays don't flex vertically at all. I managed 65+ pounds in mine and managed to keep it all on my hips. The frame also twists with your back, so as you rotate your shoulders around and twist your back, the frame moves with it.

The construction is terrific. I'd be very hard pressed to break this thing. You can also tell a lot of thought went into every detail. For instance the top lid straps fasten at the bottom of the pack (unlike most) so you get better leverage for sinching the toplid down. The two huge pockets on the back are also really nice.

Drawbacks?? I kinda missed having outside pockets i could easily get to while the pack was on. This is fixed in the new one. I also had trouble finding a water bladder to fit in the top lid pocket. Other then that, the pack is great.

Hey, thanks for the info, sounds great! I cannot find the price on these babies, what, if I can be so bold, did you pay for it?

I have a Vortex fanny pack for work. That thing has been put through the wringer a few times and comes out shining every time. Heavy duty material and great zipper. I hear they have a lifetime guarantee and will fix any damage you incur during use or travel or anthing else.

The best made.
I bought my 5800 4 years ago and it was a large frame. Fit great except the hip belt was too large. Took it down and he gave me new stays and a smaller belt for free. The best service around and unconditional lifetime guarantee.

Since you are looking at expensive packs you may want to consider a McHale. You can get a custom pack built just the way you want it with a proven design. Some are very light for the volume, yet can really carry heavy loads if need be. I've never heard of a McHale falling apart and he sews the main park with spectra thread.
